Tim Lincecum vs. Cole Hamels

Sunday Night Baseball.  8:05pm ET.

Tim Lincecum is making his major league debut tomorrow on Sunday night baseball.  He's facing Cole Hamels.

Grab the popcorn and the earplugs (for when Joe Morgan is talking), it's going to be a fun night.

300 Character factoid:
There is debate about Lincecum's nickname.  I've heard "Tim the Enchanter" before, but that was erased off of his wikipedia page.  At UW his teammates would only chant "Timmy!"

Tim the Enchanter is kinda dumb IMO.
Why does everybody need a nickname? Why can't we just call him Tim Lincecum?

My statement stands.
I've never found Monty Python funny for some reason. Clever maybe, but never funny.

Also, I now completely understand why people
who aren't Mariner fans got tired of Felix's hype and I would like to apologise to every single person I have ever told to STFU when they said something.

Because man I'm sick of hearing about this guy. It's always Timmy this, Lincecum that. My god. The knob slobbing this guy gets is starting to rival that of ESPN's job on the Yanksox.

I mean, yeah as a baseball fan I'm interested in him. But no more than I'm interested in his opponent, or Justin Verlander, or Scott Olsen, or any other good young pitcher out there.

I hope Cole Hamels kicks his ass.

Lincecum
Interesting for a variety of reasons:
  1. Unlike Morrow, he is ready to become an impact starter in the big leagues less than a year after the draught.
  2. His mechanics are mental. He'd be one of the guys I'd like to model when I get around to that Ph.D. I've not seen anything but those old Cal League videos of him pre-draft day, and I'd love to watch his first start.
  3. My fantasy teams need his help. Weak, but true.
As a baseball fan, I'm not sure I can bring myself to miss his first start.

Think about it this way
Less than a year ago, I was walking down to Husky Field here in Seattle to watch this kid start against Stanford.

Today, he's about to take the field for the San Francisco Giants as their starting pitcher.

This doesn't just happen.

by Gomez on May 6, 2007 9:13 AM PDT up reply actions

I understand why he's supposed to be good.
I'm just sick of hearing about it.

Cole Hamels won't have to face Barry Bonds
Hamels will be making his first career start against the Giants, but apparently will not face Barry Bonds. The seven-time NL MVP is not expected to be in the starting lineup after hitting his 744th career home run in San Francisco's 9-4 win on Saturday.

I hear he'll spend the game getting a foot massage from Pedro Gomez.

I love

Timmy's losing it
Fastball is now 92-94 without much control. Not a great curve, either.

This is pretty much how I expect Morrow to pitch if he starts right now.

Good idea, ESPN.
Let's bring race into this. Why not have Miller tell Morgan to go pick him some cotton while we're at it?

by Jeff Sullivan on May 6, 2007 6:05 PM PDT reply actions

You know what I think is unfair, Joe?
Spending all your airtime talking about two guys who aren't even playing in this game tonight.

by Gomez on May 6, 2007 6:06 PM PDT reply actions

Not surprised on Morgan's take
Not that I'm trying to be insensitive about what black athletes had to go through in the past, but I think we're at the point where it's not about race.

by JLC on May 6, 2007 6:08 PM PDT reply actions

For the last time, Joe
His pitches are going inside because he's losing his control, not because he's being aggressive.

Couldn't they save this Hank Aaron stuff for Baseball Tonight?

by ThundaPC on May 6, 2007 6:14 PM PDT reply actions

Pray for Felix. Pray for the M's!

by PositivePaul on May 6, 2007 6:27 PM PDT reply actions

I love Joe Morgan
I almost fell over laughing when he was talking about Howard's "toe tap" prior to his swings.

He was talking about how it was much better when he hit the homer, but when ESPN showed the side-by-side views of Howard's first 2 ABs, you could clearly see that the toe-tap was exactly the same. When Joe noticed that he quickly bailed on talking about the toe tap to how Howard kept his hands back better on the HR than he did on the K.

by PLU Tim on May 6, 2007 6:28 PM PDT reply actions

Um, where was that pitch?
That breaking ball ain't much but it was right in there.

by Gomez on May 6, 2007 6:32 PM PDT reply actions

That was not interference
He went onto the grass to hit him...

by Fett42 on May 6, 2007 6:34 PM PDT reply actions

Haha.
That was blatantly out of the basepaths.

by Jeff Sullivan on May 6, 2007 6:35 PM PDT reply actions

What the hell?
They need to change the baserunner rule if Victorino's allowed to do that and take the base.  That's fucking crooked.

by Gomez on May 6, 2007 6:35 PM PDT reply actions

LOL
What a hilarious play. Lincecum was completely oblivious to Victorino for a while.

Also, Victorino is out.

by JLC on May 6, 2007 6:35 PM PDT reply actions

Haha
Victorino is trying to bullshit Omar like he didn't mean to do it and Omar's like 'Fuck you.'

by Gomez on May 6, 2007 6:36 PM PDT reply actions

I can totally see that conversation.
SV: So, Omar.  I just wanted to hang out at second for awhile.
OV: Shut up.  You cheater.
SV: Heh.  Say, actually, I wanted to show you what I just bought.
OV: What. The. Hell.
SV: Yeah.  I stopped into Zales on my way into the park.  Check out this 3-carat earring.  You think it's my color?
OV: Spontaneously combusts.
Pray for Felix. Pray for the M's!

by Gomez on May 6, 2007 7:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Everyone looked so awful on that play.  Victorino just took off for no reason and then Lincecum took like 3 second to notice, then jacked the pickoff throw.

by Gomez on May 6, 2007 6:39 PM PDT reply actions

And that'll do it for Wild Tim
4.1 IP, 5 H, 4 ER (2 HR), 5 walks, 5 K

by Gomez on May 6, 2007 6:43 PM PDT reply actions

Final line
4.1 IP, 5 H, 2 HR, 5 BB, 5 K, 4 GB, 3 FB

Flashes of awesomeness early on, but definitely seemed to lose his stuff (command and velocity) by about the 4th inning.

by Fett42 on May 6, 2007 6:45 PM PDT reply actions

I was surprised
how much velocity he lost towards the end.  He never lost gas in the later innings at UW.  I have to chalk that up to 1st start nerves and the big innings wearing him down more quickly.

by Gomez on May 6, 2007 6:48 PM PDT reply actions

Haha
Jon and Joe are talking about when Ortiz will return.  Like anyone in their right mind wants that fat toad back.

by Gomez on May 6, 2007 6:50 PM PDT reply actions

Cole Hamels is ours, and you can't have him
...sadly, I missed the game since I was out of town all weekend.

Last year at this time (May 7th), Hamels had just made his third start in AAA.  His line was 23 IP, 10 H, 1 R/ER, 0 HR, 1 BB, 36 K, 0.47 WHIP, 0.39 ERA.

I'm really glad he got to steal the spotlight, just like Felix did with the Red Sox.

Yeah, I wouldn't call 3 runs in 7 innings stealing
the spotlight. He was better than Lincecum, but he wasn't dominate or anything.
