5/30: Open Game Thread

First Pitch: 7:05pm PDT

Ichiro CF Willits LF Vidro DH Cabrera SS Ibanez LF Guerrero RF Guillen RF Matthews CF BROUSSARD! 1B Kotchman 1B Johjima C Kendrick 2B Beltre 3B Napoli C Betancourt SS Hillenbrand LOL Lopez 2B Aybar 3B ---------- ----------

King Felix (3-2, 2.87) Jered Weaver 4-3, 3.68

I have to admit that when I looked up the starters and saw "J. Weaver", I had a momentary lapse of "Oh crap," and then I realized that it was okay, because it was the other Weaver, and he was starting for the other team.

I'm heading up to Third Place Books to heckle DMZ's book signing event which starts at the same time as the game, so hopefully Jeff's power will be back on by then so he can entertain you all in the game thread. Well, or not, since I hear some important hockey game is happening tonight. On Felix Day. The nerve!

LET'S GO MARINERS!!

Today is one of my top 5 days of the year -- I'll be taking in my first ballgame of the season!

LONG LIVE THE KING.  I'll be the dude wearing the Gar jersey and getting into shouting matches with Halos fans.

Over in Toronto, Jesse Litsch just ruined the Jays' chances to sell high, so there's less chance Bavasi will trade for him.

Unbelieveable
I hope Chad Tracy likes the bench, or is willing to develop his corner outfield skills.

by Gomez on May 30, 2007 6:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, cause Conor Jackson had another 2B
today, and that's Tracy's other position.

But the problem is, Byrnes is hitting well, and had 2 homers today, so Tracy can't play there. Young is hitting for power, so Tracy can't play there. Quentin is struggling, so I guess RF is his only option for everyday play.

certainly Felix fault for giving up the homers, so have to put some blame on him, but the bad luck bug hit him again.

Just for clarification,
I was talking about Felix, not whoever posted that statement. Even with the rest of the start, claiming he'll never get it together seems a little premature. It took John Lackey 2 seasons to get his head together after his great rookie year, and he was older than Felix.

but he hasn't been 7 runs bad either.

by PLU Tim on May 30, 2007 8:55 PM PDT up reply actions

I'll be the first...
It should be 5-3 Mariners right now.  In the first inning, O-Cab got a weak hit, a less than 50 feet, but a hit nonetheless.  Next batter, Vlad grounds into a double play.  Only Yuni misses it, turning the sure inning ending double play into 2 on and 1 out.  Next batter, Matthews goes deep--on a stupid ass pitch for Felix to throw, admittedly, but he never should've had to throw it.  Batter after that, Kotchman goes deep.  4-1, when he should've left the inning with the lead.

The other three are on him.

by BrettJMiller on May 30, 2007 8:56 PM PDT up reply actions

He still grooved
back to back pitches to Matthews and Kotchman. No amount of bad luck changes the fact that that's lousy pitching.

How about....
we just forget about Green tonight, and pitch Morrow for 1 and Putz for 2?

by TheMarinator on May 30, 2007 9:05 PM PDT reply actions

That curveball
Is a GOOD two-strike pitch, Felix. A high 94 MPH 4-seam fastball is a BAD two-strike pitch.

by JLC on May 30, 2007 9:05 PM PDT reply actions

10 baserunners in 6 innings.
For most starters, that's decent, probably a 6IP, 3ER performance.  For Felix, it's awful, and especially awful tonight.

I am guessing that you...
are talking about the pinchhitter for Kotchman.  Sherrill had to pitch to one batter, as he was brought into the game.  The Angels did not pinch hit for Kotchman until after Sherrill was announced.  In order to get the RHB/LHP matchup.  Hargrove couldn't have done anything different, except bring Morrow in to face Kotchman.
