All you Sens fans are happy
I wanted the Canucks to win, because I root for the local teams.  2nd would've been the Red Wings because I love Bertuzzi, and don't make fun of him just because Steve Avery is a pussy.  If you cheapshot the leader of a team, the big guy on the other team is going to hit you hard.
Anyways, I'm going to have to root for the Ducks because I like Pronger, and who doesn't love the Mighty Ducks movies? (sarcasm)

I don't want this thead to go OT
I want a place where we can discuss the finals flame free but a) It was Steve Moore who Bertuzzi hit and b) You cannot possibly justify that hit, I don't care if you are a Canucks fan or not.

The Mighty Ducks was just a Bad News Bears wannabe, even with the cheesy cliche ending.
If you look around the table and you can't tell who the sucker is, and then you see Bill Bavasi, it's him.

I don't know a thing about the NHL
Can someone offer us a quick summary of these two teams and what to watch for?

by Slozbury Stouvre on May 26, 2007 7:56 AM PDT reply actions

Great matchup
Both teams can really put the puck in the net, but also play very solid D.  Ottawa has the edge on offense while Anaheim probably is a better defensive team.

Anaheim has the hotter goaltender, JS Giguere, who has a 1.87 goals against average and a 93.1 save% in the playoffs.  And they also have two of the best defensemen on the planet in Chris Pronger and Scott Neidermayer.  Ottawa counters with three dynamic forwards: Dany Heatley, Jason Spezza, and Daniel Alfredsson, all of whom have more points than games played in the playoffs.  And their goalie, Ray Emery, hasn't been too shabby either, with stats almost as impressive as Giguere.

I'm looking forward to it.

Also
Anaheim hits everything that moves. Frequently in an illegal manner.

by Jeff Sullivan on May 26, 2007 9:38 AM PDT up reply actions

No bias of course :)
I don't see enough Anaheim games to know that they are a dirty team. I thought they played the Wings pretty well and not overly dirty, of the games I saw. (which was not a lot because of the time difference) The thing to watch for is the Ducks checking line. They can really shut teams down and it will be interesting to see how the Sens top line can do with it. If the Alfredson/Spezza/Heatley line has trouble scoring, this series will be over in a hurry.

However, I don't think that will happen. Sens in 7 is my prediction. I wanted to say Sens in 6 but three of the last four SCF's have gone 7, I'm thinking this will not end the trend.

by phil333 on May 26, 2007 2:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Those aren't my words.
Lots of Wild fans I know were pretty upset with the way the Ducks handled themselves. Unnecessary checks, hitting after the whistle, Kunitz grabbing hair, etc. Wings fans were also none too pleased with Pronger's hit last series, as that game got out of hand in a hurry.

Anaheim's by far the most physical team Ottawa's faced in the postseason, but by the same token Ottawa's by far the most skilled opponent of Anaheim's. These two match up real well.

by Jeff Sullivan on May 26, 2007 2:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Isn't Heatley
the drunk driving dude who killed his team mate?

As a casual fan looking for a rooting interest I might have a hard time pulling for a team that employs him.

by bluemax on May 27, 2007 2:31 PM PDT up reply actions

That's kind of a sore subject.
First of all, he wasn't over the legal limit. And the Snyder family has since forgiven him for the accident. Everyone's pretty much trying to move on with their lives.

I guess this is how they make sure neither team goes into the final with any momentum.

Sorry
Senator fans. Is Pronger a dirty player cause I keep seeing him making questionable hits...

by Slica on May 28, 2007 8:10 PM PDT reply actions

What Sen was on the ice for all the Ducks goals?
Wade Redden.

I knew he had a bad game (despite his goal) but damn...  He's going to be a big part of whether the Sens bounce back in Game 2.

by ningwers on May 29, 2007 12:48 PM PDT reply actions

I still don't understand
why Murray insists on pairing Redden/Meszaros with the big line. Can a brother get a little more Tom Preissing?

by Jeff Sullivan on May 29, 2007 1:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Especially since the big line
is the weakest back checking line the Sens have (see the Ducks third goal last night).

by ningwers on May 29, 2007 1:26 PM PDT up reply actions

You know what I'd like to see?
More Schubert along the blue line. You obviously can't scratch any of the defensemen right now, but I'd be fine rolling seven of them, then mixing and matching the 2nd-4th offensive lines. I actually trust Schubert to keep the puck and play the body, which is more than I can say for Wade or Andrej.

by Jeff Sullivan on May 29, 2007 1:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Off to the bar to watch the game
Let's hope we see a more solid performance out of the team tonight.  I'm looking at you, Redden >:|

Somewhere
Jeff is doused in urine-stained pants mixed with his own tears...

...Ottawa had a 5-3 and failed. Ducks just got done bombarding them to VERY close shots...so far 0-0.

by Slica on May 30, 2007 6:19 PM PDT reply actions

Soooooo
Is Anaheim still getting away with blatantly mugging the Sens alongside the boards.  They might as well take their wallets while they're up there.

by Gomez on May 30, 2007 6:41 PM PDT reply actions

Aren't you watching it?
...

Its been a battle of the goalies, but since Emery has been under way more fire, hes gotta be the star of the game right now.

by Slica on May 30, 2007 6:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Well shit...
While the rest of the world figured the Sens needed to make adjustments to win Game 2, apparently the Sens and their coaching staff didn't get the memo.  The end result?  A depressing replay of Game 1.  Now they have to win both games in Ottawa to even have a chance, but given the way they're playing that seems unlikely.  This sucks.

On a lighter note (because humor's the only thing keeping me from being depressed right now), for those of you that missed the game here's a reenactment of the Sens trying to bring the puck into the Ducks' zone:

Oh, and Jason Spezza's a no talent asshat.

by ningwers on May 30, 2007 11:58 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

My only hope
is that they're able to benefit from getting the last line change at home, thus giving them the big line against someone other than Moen-Pahlsson-Niedermayer for a few shifts a game. Maybe I'm reaching, but that could make all the difference.

Of course, that doesn't help them much when they go back on the road again, but hey, baby steps.

by Jeff Sullivan on May 31, 2007 12:09 AM PDT up reply actions

My only hope
Is that they almost can't possibly play worse offensively than they did last night, so there's no where to go but up!

by ningwers on May 31, 2007 6:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah
and the benefit of Anaheim's style is that even when you're losing, you're never losing by much.

by Jeff Sullivan on May 31, 2007 6:13 PM PDT up reply actions

One thing I did notice in Game 2
is that it seemed like every time the Sens dumped the puck in to go on the forecheck, they were beaten badly to the puck by the Ducks defense almost every time.  I don't know if this was because the Sens forecheckers simply weren't getting any speed up in the neutral zone or because the Ducks were interfering quite a bit at the blueline, but it is certainly a huge reason why their offense couldn't get going.  The Ducks have decided to go with the blueline wall defensively, so if the Sens want back in this series they'd better find a way to get their forecheck back in a hurry.

there's always...
...the hope of a cataclysmic injury to--say... ohhh, I dunno--Chris Pronger...

Wow
Two quick goals both ways, 2-2.

Im still not a Sens fan, as they are under 'respect them, but dont really care about them' category...but im starting to love Emery and Fischer.

Just judo tossed homedude on the ice and coulda beat the shit outta him there...I love that cat.

Oh and fuck Chris Pronger.
Since we probably won't be seeing McAmmond until September, we better not see you for Game 4, you sorry son of a bitch.

He better watch what he does
he messed with Fischer, hes gonna get judo tossed.

As posted elsewhere...
"The league should make sure Pronger doesn't play Game 4, or the Sens should make sure he doesn't play Game 5."

Not that I agree entirely, but I enjoy the sentiment.

Oh man
Hell of a game!  Although I'd have to admit that the last few minutes of it were lost in an alcohol-induced blur.

by ningwers on Jun 3, 2007 10:57 AM PDT reply actions

You have to wonder
how many more people does he have to hit in the head before the general public finally realizes that he's a dirty player.

by ningwers on Jun 4, 2007 9:43 AM PDT up reply actions

Seventh suspension of his career, I believe.
It should've been for 2+ games, but from a spineless blowhard like Colin Campbell, I'll take what I can get.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 4, 2007 9:51 AM PDT up reply actions

It's often said that a team reflects
the personality of it's coach.  This is Randy Carlyle commenting on the possibility of McAmmond playing in Game 4:

"Nothing surprises me. It's the playoffs. People make huge strides in recovery after suspensions. It's amazing."

Anyone who watched the video of the hit and McAmmond  lying unconscious on the ice can't possibly believe that he was faking it.  It's no wonder the Ducks act like such class acts on the ice.

by ningwers on Jun 4, 2007 3:48 PM PDT reply actions

I used to call out coachs for being dicks
But then Chelsea hired Mourinho and I've realised I kinda enjoy it.

by Graham MacAree on Jun 4, 2007 4:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah.
Carlyle's a real bastion of class. The Ducks deserve to get their asses kicked almost as much as Anaheim doesn't deserve a Cup.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 4, 2007 4:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Are you still going on Wensday
Given the unpleasantries that might occur.

by Robert on Jun 4, 2007 8:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I'm going.
Although if Anaheim wins, I'd like to high-tail it outta there and be in my car by the final horn.

...that is, if I make it that far. If I'm not incarcerated for getting into a fight with someone before the puck drops, I haven't done my job.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 4, 2007 9:21 PM PDT up reply actions

The Blimp? Not a blimp, but the blimp?
Is there a special blimp for committing suicide? Why was I not made aware of this?

by Goose on Jun 5, 2007 2:48 AM PDT up reply actions

It's not really a blimp for general suicidal needs
just for Jeff's.  At Game 1, he seemed unusually interested in the idea of trying to make a jump for the little blimp that flies around the arena to keep the fans entertained between periods.  Luckily I was able to talk him out of it (mainly because I didn't really feel like writing a diary post about Jeff's death by tiny dirigible).  I think he just liked the idea of taking a bunch of Ducks fans with him.

by ningwers on Jun 6, 2007 12:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Hmmm.
With Jeff's luck, he'd probably land on the few fellow Sens fans that were there with him...
Since there's no "u" in "retire" this'll have to do: Retiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiire.

by PositivePaul on Jun 6, 2007 1:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Sadly
That shouldn't be a problem tonight

by ningwers on Jun 6, 2007 2:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Im gonna say this now
Sorry guys.

Go Ducks (reverse psychology...I used it once, and the Sens won that game)...

Right now, you can use all the help you can get. 2-0 Ducks.
