At this point, there's just nothing to say. Jeff Weaver might be is the worst starting pitcher in franchise history, and he makes it more and more evident every time he steps foot on the mound. If this wasn't his last start in a Mariner uniform, then it's time to stop blaming the pitcher and start blaming the organization.

There's nothing fun about automatic losses, but look on the bright side - Felix should theoretically be back in time for this rotation spot's next go-round. This has to end sometime, right?

I'm going to a bar to watch hockey. Which means time for another positively invigorating You Write The Recap! Let us hear your various tales of woe!

Biggest Contribution: Ben Broussard, +4.6%
Biggest Suckfest: Jeff Weaver, -31.3%
Most Important At Bat: Beltre strikeout, -7.1%
Most Important Pitch: Ordonez homer, -14.8%

Total Contribution by Position Players: -20.3%
Total Contribution by Opposition: +0.6%

(What is this?)

Yankees come to town tomorrow night, with Jarrod Washburn going up against Darrell Rasn-aw God dammit.

Jeff Weaver.  So easy, a caveman can hit it.

Giving them a season total of six.

And Snelling
left the game in the 3rd with a left knee contusion. It is only being called a "contusion" right now, but anytime you see "Snelling" and "knee" in the same semtemce it is scary.

Jack Cust has more HR than Vidro
in 25 fewer games played.  And only 4 fewer walks.

We don't need to go over what each organization gave up to acquire them, respectively.

Stubborn M's
What bothers me the most about the Weaver situation is that the Yankees had a similar, yet less severe situation with Igawa and they sent his ass down to the minors to go work it out.  They're even more starved for pitching than the Mariners and yet, they were sick of watching the guaranteed losses.

Comparing the two:
          W L G GS ERA   IP
 K Igawa  2 1 6 5  7.63  30.2
 J Weaver 0 6 5 5  14.32 22.0

They were getting a lot more out of Igawa, had a lot more money invested in him and STILL didn't hesitate to demote him to the bullpen and then later send him down to try and fix whatever was not working.

The M's have a long history of keeping players in their roles despite poor performance.  This year it is Weaver (and Ho for the most part too), last year it was Pineiro and Everett... It never stops.

by batura on May 10, 2007 1:40 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

The problem is this
Bavasi has hitched his wagon to both HoRam and Weaver. So you send Weaver to the bullpen and HoRam to the minors. Then what? Call up Jorge Campillo? Send Morrow to the rotation? Oh, wait, the guy is in our bullpen and hasn't pitched more than three innings in a game. Call up Jim Parque?

There just aren't any other viable options. One can go when Felix comes back, but there is no way to get rid of both, outside of a trade.

by Nuss on May 10, 2007 3:46 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He won't send down HoRam
They'll give him another couple months to flounder before they even consider moving him to the pen, let alone demoting him, a la Pineiro.

Yeah but
Piniero actually strung together some good games early in the season
http://www.baseball-reference.com/pi/gl.cgi?n1=pineijo01&t=p&year=2006
After the first two games of may he was 4-2 with a sub-4 ERA and won player of the week or something...note I am not proficient and drumming up SABR stats which are probably more telling...

Ho has sucked pretty bad from the get go...

by appleshampoo on May 10, 2007 6:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Boy way to twist your argument
Jim Parque is the last guy they would call up who isn't facing jail time. They'd go Woods, Leher, Feierabend, or even Rowland-Smith before Parque.

How did Guillen manage a negative contribution
After going 3-4 was a 2B and a walk?  Good things came too late to really matter?  What brought him down?

by BrettJMiller on May 10, 2007 1:46 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

This happened to Robinson Cano last year
The hits just lacked context: they didn't drive in any runs or spark any rallies in close situations.

by Gomez on May 10, 2007 1:57 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

im guessing
it has to do with him not getting a run home in the 1st inning, 1st and 3rd with 1 out and he K'd.  That was probably worth a pretty big negative WPA, his other hits probably just didn't make up for it.

by MFAN on May 10, 2007 1:59 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Isn't it time
the guy moves up to No. 3 in the order? He hitting the crap out of the ball right now, and Ibanez is striking fear in the hearts of no one.

(Except for maybe his own pitchers when flyballs end up in left ...)

There's no way
That he gets another start.

His ERA is 14.32.  Not after one bad start.  Nor two.  Not even three.  Four?  Five?  SIX starts!?!?!?

The only thing missing is an orange goatee and an invitation to join Sandfrog.  Yeah, I went there.

by oneiric232 on May 10, 2007 2:07 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

It was 15.75 after 5 starts
and somehow he got a sixth.

He's WAY below replacement level.  Almost any random independent league guy would have been better than him, but somehow we picked him.  Again.

Being confident we won't do it again invites disaster.

Jeff Weaver MIGHT be the worst
starting pitcher in franchise history?  MIGHT?

He's already the worst pitcher in frachise history (by ERA, min 10 IP), and he's well past that innings threshhold.

Do we honestly think that if he threw 50 innings he'd somehow come out looking better than Steve Trout?

by Llewdor on May 10, 2007 2:21 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Let him pitch drunk...
At least he would be entertaining....right now he just pisses me off.  Weaver and dfa need to be in the same headline....followed by Hargrove seen sobbing uncontrollably as he was denied entry to the M's facilities.

Lest you get something like 'Felix DFA'd, Weaver Given Extension'

by Gomez on May 10, 2007 3:01 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's already punch-drunk
Not only has Seattle lost each of his starts, Weaver himself has lost them all. That's saying something when you average barely 3 innings a start.

On the positive side: he let in 6 runs in 5 innings tonight, but his ERA actually improved! It looks as if he's reversed the trend to go straight to Hell and wants a vacation in Boise along the way.

Honesty time...
I think Jeff Weaver is perhaps the worst pitcher I have ever seen in person. I did not like it when the Angels signed him. I couldn't BELIEVE the Mariners signed him a year later. I was convinced he was going to tank and tank hard in Seattle from the moment the signing was announced... And even with all that, if you had told me that six starts in Weaver would have an ERA in double digits, I'd have asked what you were smoking. Pitchers in the MLB just aren't that bad. Anybody who gets promoted past high-A is capable of putting up an 8 ERA or so. I just wouldn't have believed a guy who's pitched in the majors for 8 seasons would have the gall to suck THIS much and not just retire. I can't remember ever seeing anybody get flattened the way Weaver has this many starts in a row. So my condolences, Mariner fans, and I honestly hope Jeff Weaver never starts another game in a Mariners uniform. He's become a joke, and to be honest, he's performing at such a consistently low level people shouldn't be paying ML prices to have to watch him.

I came across this Jennie Finch highlight video.

I will also fully admit that this was just an excuse for me to post about her.
