2-0

Here's how I've decided I'm going to do this for these late games (particularly the ones I don't get to watch): throw up a reaction thread for immediate responses, then get to the Win Expectancy stuff and a few notes the next day. Seems like the best course of action for everyone involved. So here you go, your first You Write The Recap! of 2007. Make it good; this has been no small achievement.

Late edit: also, FUNK BLAST!

Mateo?
Here's hoping that Mateo gets sent . . . somewhere.  He sucked last year, and he still sucks.  He's the one glaring weakness we've seen so far (Rhodes having kept his fanny on the bench), except for the guy who sent him into the game, who must be nuts.

Great start for the team, and they may actually be a team this year.  They're giving us reasons to go to games.

Mateo
What a fucking joke.  Forget sucking in high-leverage situations, he can't even keep a 2 run lead.  And then he vultures wins.  What a fucktard.  Arg, I hate him.

My god
I'm away from home for work and I watching the game with my wife on the phone. When Mateo started warming up, she said, "It's like a night mare from last year."

Hey now, it's one appearance, and JJ-
oh who the fuck am I kidding?  Mateo sucks and needs to catch the next bus to anywhere that isn't Seattle.

Just want to reflect a bit
on us tying last years win total against the A's already. Thats just stupid. We'll look back on the 2006 M's and wonder just how futile and pathetic a team has to be to lose that much to one opponent.

Fun game
Top of the 7th, Julio "I suck" Mateo vs. Nick "I kill the Mariners" Swisher.  I made myself a little bet that if Mateo managed to get Swisher out, we would win.  If Swisher got a hit, we would lose.

Nick Swisher singled, and I almost gave up hope.

But thankfully Mateo only gave up 2 runs, and our offense fucking came to life in the bottom of the 7th (Guillen! YUNI! JOSE!!!! Ichiro! Beltre?!? fuck you Vidro).

Anyway, I had some Garlic fries, a foot long, and some nachos in addition to too many beers.  So, time to go to sleep, and dream about a winning season.  I am tempted to bring a broom to Safeco tomorrow...

The Sad Fact
is that we need Mateo, as we have absolutely no depth in the bullpen.

by dz on Apr 3, 2007 10:58 PM PDT reply actions

No we don't.
I'm pretty sure Jake Woods could actually do better.

Or just spin the wheel and select a random bullpen arm from Tacoma.

We need Mateo...
like we need a box full of poopy flavored lolly pops.  I'd feel much more comfortable with Woods in the long role.  But we're not paying lots of money for him to blow some games, we're paying lots of money for Mateo to blow many games.

by BrettJMiller on Apr 3, 2007 11:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Mateo should be working long relief
when the game's pretty much over, not coming in and blowing 3 run leads, at least until he shows he can get guys out like he used to.

If we're not gonna have Woods, then Mateo should fill the Woods role.  Hell, I'd rather have Sean White out there in a 4-1 game than Mateo.

by Gomez on Apr 4, 2007 9:00 AM PDT up reply actions

We are desperate
That's why Morrow is on the team, he should be in Tacoma developing into a starter.

by dz on Apr 3, 2007 11:02 PM PDT reply actions

What about Johan Santana?
He first came up as a RP because that's where they had room for him in the bigs. Doesn't look like he forgot how to throw 200 innings. A guy hits a point where he's not developing anymore facing inferior talent, and Morrow showed in spring training (which albeit was a short audition) he would have destroyed minor league talent. Last night he showed why he's in the majors in a big way - He got the jitters out. Guy puts 2 on base to start the 9th and everyone's thinking "oh, it was just a fluke, these are still the same M's who dropped 17 of 19 to Oakland last year". What did he come back and do? Shut down the side. Wasn't dominating, but he showed a noticeable improvement in his poise. That will continue. I'd rather he be learning that here, now, while helping the big club as a RP than blowing inferior AAA talent away as a SP.
We want the funk! Give up the funk!

by thejew4u on Apr 4, 2007 7:00 AM PDT up reply actions

What? No.
Johan Santana started 49 games in the Astros system up through low-A level over 3 years, which is not nearly the same as Morrow being a college starter.

The reason that Minnesota had him in the bullpen to start the year was because he was a Rule 5 pick and they had to keep him on the roster or lose him, and they weren't crazy enough to start a guy whose highest level pitched was single-A ball with a 4.66 ERA. And they were right to, because he sucked for a couple years.

The comparison is irrelevant. Santana threw 161 innings as a minor league starting pitcher when Houston left him unprotected. In 2006, Brandon Morrow pitched 16 innings of professional baseball.

You can't just ignore the minor leagues.

by Graham MacAree on Apr 4, 2007 7:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Small sample size
Add in the fact that the majority of spring training stats are worthess you are completly wrong that Morrow would dominate AAA.  Maybe if he only pitched 1 inning a game he would do great.  However, he needs to learn how to start and work his way through a lineup the 2nd and 3rd time as well as work on not going full out for only an inning and pacing himself.

There has never really been a pitching prospect being rushed to the majors like the M's did with Morrow.  He has less then 20 innings pitched as a PRO and needs to learn how to start.

Personally, I think he didn't look good last night at all.  After he worked out the jitters, he only looked good on Kendall.

I loved it too
but there is a tricky line to walk when calling a game as if you were just a fan.  Listen to any White Sox broadcast, and you'll see what I mean.  They are more like the idiot fans with the season tickets right behind yours, who say the dumbest things imaginable, blurt out encouragement uncontrollably, and have lost their short and long term memory, so they repeat the same shit every game of the year.

by Edgar for Pres on Apr 3, 2007 11:15 PM PDT reply actions

Mixed
Mateo was awful, Riethsma (sorry for the spelling) looked good, and Morrow had some problems, but got out of it.

by dz on Apr 3, 2007 11:17 PM PDT up reply actions

dz basically got it there
Mateo looked like vintage 2006 Mateo (bad news), Reitsma actually was competent (good news), and Morrow's debut jitters clearly affected his ability to throw strikes but he got out alive (we'll see, though I think he'll be fine).

by Gomez on Apr 4, 2007 9:03 AM PDT up reply actions

My recap in two words:
FUNNNNNNNK BLAAAAAAST!!

Seriously, though, the Mariners are playing like they're out to reverse that 2-17 win/loss record they had versus the A's last season. Revenge is in their eyes.

What's the point of having a 12-man pen if only one man, Mateo, is used? I can't believe he's still our go-to guy.

Betancourt's ceiling may be higher than we thought. The bombs hit today and in ST have been no-doubters. We ain't seeing warning track power anymore.

Sweep tomorrow. Because that would feel awesome.

by JLC on Apr 3, 2007 11:18 PM PDT reply actions

But who?
We traded away Soriono, so who in our bullpen could replace Mateo?

by dz on Apr 3, 2007 11:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Morrow'll become that guy.
Hargrove just doesn't want to throw him right into the fire without getting comfortable first.

What we'll probably see by June or so is Reitsma in the 7th and Morrow in the 8th.

You know
if they fired Mike Hargrove tomorrow I'd be willing to donate my right arm to Mark Lowe. It's got no miles on it at all.

O'Flaherty, Huber, Lehr, RRS
I think it should be obvious by now that LL fans are not fans of Mateo. His K rate has declined 3 straight seasons, he's a FB pitcher, and he's been pretty lucky his entire career.

Is he the worse reliever in the world? Probably not. But he's not the third best option in the pen. Wasn't last year, wasn't this year.

Besides, my point was that Mateo is still seen as the anchor in the pen despite last year's struggles - I am not necessarily advocating getting rid of Mateo, just limiting his exposure in close game situations.

by JLC on Apr 3, 2007 11:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Well..
It's obvious that others have much more confidence in our other pitchers than I do. With Mateo we know much better on what we are going to get, with the other pitchers they may be better but it is just as likely that they will be worse.

Mateo's location was a joke
There was one comical sequence that started where Johjima set him up on the low-outside corner. It went right down the middle (thankfully SOME A's are still patient hitters). The next pitch, Joh moves his glove about 6 inches further outside and a little lower. Same exact location. Third pitch, which ended up in play, Joh moved another 6 inches outside and guess where Mateo's pitch wound up? Gotta at least give Joh credit for trying to compensate.

Also, it's so good to see the scoreboard/overlay graphics on FSN Northwest this year. Last year without the overlays was horrible. And it was basically just for M's games which made no sense.

Also, it seems obscene that
I had three options for this game: FSN Bay Area, MLB Extra Innings free preview feed of FSN Bay Area, or mlb.tv.

I went with the first option for this game. This is my first year away from FSN Northwest, and I have to say, the guys who call games for the A's aren't half bad. They're kind of vanilla, but I really appreciate how they just call the game without distracting from it. Example: they gave a quick mention of Brandon Morrow being a local kid (from Santa Rosa, went to Cal) when he started the 9th, but that was it. Had that been Rick Rizzs, he would be talking about it the entire inning.

I happened to pick one of less than 30% that the team lost in 2001. I'm such a jinx, I haven't seen Seattle win in person since 1991 (Only been to 5 games since then, but still, 0-5 sucks.)

Not that worried about Vidro yet, honestly.  Two games in.  I'll give him a week or two before I throw him under the bus.

Sims is awesome.  I can't get enough of the guy.  Blowers is like listening to white noise when falling asleep.  I could do without him, but whatever, it gets the job done.

As usual..
As usual for a weekday game i fell asleep in the middle (I'm on the east Coast).  They were up 4-2 last I could remember, and I always feel a combination of hope and dread when I wake up the next morning and check the score*.  Did they hang on?

Nice to see the happy news this morning.  Not so nice to see Mateo get lit up, though.

*Note that if they're losing when I fall asleep I've rarely bothered mustering any hope the last two years.  I desperately want that to change.

An enjoyable game
Just a few thoughts...

Our offense seems to be doing ok in spite of Vidro. Yes, it has only been two games, but there is one thing that I have observed so far that he cannot change and that is his speed. The guy is slower than my ex getting up in the morning after all the ships have left port. We are going to see alot of outs and double plays from him this year. My gut says we will have a Broussard sighting here after a bit.

Lopez is still not on track. I see alot of the 2nd half from last year in him. Hargrove and Pentland have to see this and undo what they did. He just doesn't seem like the brash confident hitter he was in the 1st half of 06. I wouldn't be surprised if he were the first regular rested by Bloomie this year.

I liked Morrow last night. He was nervous and pumped at the same time. Kind of like a deer getting ready to run across a highway after drinking ten red bulls. If he can control that energy and focus a little he will be ok. An 83mph change to go with a 95mph fastball is going to make people look awfully stupid.

I am liking what I see from Joh this year as far as working with the pitchers. He seems to be talking to them more and working to get them comfortable. I am not sure if this is because he is now more at ease after his first year. Now if he would only encourage Mateo to get back in the weight room....

Overall, I really like what I see. But it is only two games. I don't think we will get a good feel for the team until maybe 15 games in. By then we will have been through the rotation 3 times and had at least 5 Bloomer sightings.

Agreed on Vidro
He's going to be better than he has been these first two games, but his speed is horrible. Then again, you don't need speed to be a good hitter, but if you aren't going to be great, speed can help.

by phil333 on Apr 4, 2007 8:14 AM PDT up reply actions

Some speed would definitely help.
Especially if he is on first and someone behind him hits a double. Instead of scoring he is going to be doubled over third base puking from the exertion.

Also, alot of the balls that he hits that could be doubles (for someone faster than a one legged Olerud) are going to end up singles.

I honestly don't think he belongs on the 3 spot. Of course I am not sure who to put there right now.

Our O, and Jose G's arm
After Mateo messed it all up, I liked how the crew came out and made stuff happen, which never happened last year. It was like Jose G., Yubet, Ichiro, and Beltre gave Mateo, the big fuck you. I still new to baseball and I take everything the guys in the both say, but can we expect, 20 + hrs from Yubet?

When/if our O starts to click they will be sick.

So far I'm really happy with Jose G., what a gun, I think it shocked the infeild a little bit.

by InSpokane on Apr 4, 2007 8:54 AM PDT reply actions

I wouldn't expect it, but...
It wouldn't surprise me if he becomes a guy who can jack 20 a year. When he wants to, he can turn on the pitch pretty well, as evidenced by his HR last night, his near jack monday, and his couple in spring.

by TyranT on Apr 4, 2007 8:58 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah
looks like those warm-up tosses he one-hopped to Ichiro on Monday were an anomaly... maybe because of getting used to the cold.  Guillen's arm is back, Guillen's bat appears back, and I've got a good feeling that, until his next blowup, we have the Good Jose Guillen.

by Gomez on Apr 4, 2007 9:08 AM PDT up reply actions

This game
Remember the sinking feeling in the back of your mind yesterday, despite Felix's dominance?  That feeling that accompanied each of the last 2-3 seasons, that the Mariners were gonna blow it and the result was a foregone conclusion?

Yeah, it came back strong all throughout yesterday's game, and then Mateo came in and I figured, well, that's it.  And he went ahead and vomited up a 3 run lead, but somehow escaped without giving the A's the lead.

Then the offense did something strange... I think they call it... responded?  I don't know, I hear good teams do it all the time but I don't see the Mariners do it very much so I'm not used to it.  ANYWAY, suddenly, we've got a 4 run lead, Dave Sims gets pumped up without the Rizzsian fakeness, Yuni FINALLY conquers the outfield wall after several tries, then Reitsma comes in and actually performs, and we've got enough of a cushion to try out Morrow.

This team is still deeply flawed but looks like they've got enough fire to compete and overcome some adversity for a change.

Oh, by the way, two interesting stats:

  • Every one of our starters has gotten a hit this year after 2 games.  Yes, even Vidro.
  • Jarrod Washburn only allowed 2 runs in 6 innings, and one of those was part of the Mateo Vulture Special.

by Gomez on Apr 4, 2007 9:21 AM PDT reply actions

by PositivePaul on Apr 4, 2007 9:23 AM PDT up reply actions

Thoughts on Morrow...
While he definitely had the jitters out there, there  were two things I noticed that I really, really liked about him.
  1. His pitching motion is buttery-smooth.  I'm definitely not the sharpest eye on the shelf when it comes to those things, but even with my limited knowledge of how those things work, I can really see a huge difference in the way he pitches and in the way other guys do.  His motion just looks natural and clean, and it seems unusually smooth to me.
  2. While he wasn't throwing strikes, he didn't seem to be overthrowing.  When he missed, he missed low, and only maybe one or two of his 'oops' pitches were up.  If you're going to miss, except when facing Vlad, it's better to miss where he was missing last night.  He wasn't off by too much.
Both of those things are very encouraging for me.  He's got his first game jitters out of the way now, and he'll only get better from here.
Iceberg, right ahead!

by PositivePaul on Apr 4, 2007 9:21 AM PDT reply actions

Agree
His struggles totally looked like jitters and getting comfortable with pitching on the big league stage, and I can't imagine his 2nd appearance won't be a big improvement.

by Gomez on Apr 4, 2007 9:22 AM PDT up reply actions

I do have to say
that I wasn't impressed with his off-speed stuff. I couldn't tell if it was a slider that didn't move much, or a splitter that didn't split much, but there wasn't much to it. It was relatively flat, and came in at only 83 mph.

His fastball is incredible, however.

I reject your reality and substitute my own!

It looked like a changeup to me
He does have one, he just hasn't shown it much and as such it's pretty rubbish. I didn't see any splitters, they'd come in faster than 83 anyway.

The Les Schwab speed pitch is right next to the bullpen. What they need to do is have showdown between the fans and Mateo then have the winner pitch in place of Mateo. Charge $5 to enter the contest and soon they will have enough money to buy out Mateo's contract.
