Joe Torre as replacement for Hargrove?

The Yankees pitching sucks.  Joe Torre just inked a new contract, but I think it is at least possible that Torre's head will be on the block before long if the Yanks can't get out of the cellar.  Just look at how Steinbrenner is reacting now.  You can't blame A-Rod.  They won't blame Jeter.  I can see Torre becoming the scapegoat for the highest paid team in baseball sinking to the bottom over the course of the season.

I don't want Torre managing the Ms
I don't think he's much better than Grover. He just looks way better b/c he has talent on the team.

Yah, but at least he has won
...with his talent.  Remember, Hargrove had talent too.  Look where that got him.

Hargrove won when he had talent
See: 1995-1999 Indians. They won exactly as many World Series as the Yankees have from 2001-2007, and made just as many appearances.

Gotta agree with ec here
Their capable but suspect pitching was the primary culprit.  A monkey could have managed that team to 95 wins and an ALCS.

Managers don't help teams too much but bad managers can certainly hurt them.  Just about anyone younger than Dusty Baker with a working brain can probably do better than Hargrove.

Torre is great
At sitting back and letting his team do all the work.

Also, I would rather have pie.

Can we have Moyer
For a pitching coach too?

by Graham on Apr 30, 2007 2:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Moyer could manage
trade for him and bring back the player-manager.

they have one in Japan currently
Atsuya Furuta, manager of the Yakult Swallows, but he's not gotten all that much playing time since becoming manager.

on the other hand, IceX can tell you about how awesome "daida, ore" is ("pinch-hitting, me").  Yakult even printed up a series of stuff that says "Time!  A pinch-hitter is me." in English, which is just plain funny.

I totally agree with that
and Dan Wilson for bench coach.
Edgar Martinez for hitting coach
Jay Buhner for first base coach

Didn't the Tigers try that basic approach?
Basically hire all of the heros from your past, to try to catch the "mojo" from a winning team?

no, that's not what I meant.
I was actually serious about thinking that Pat Borders would make a good manager.  Not as a former Mariners player, but just as a former catcher and all-around-good-guy baseball-dude who knows the game.

I was responding more to the idea of
Edgar for hitting coach
Jay Buhnner for 1st base coach
etc., etc.

I always thought Pat Borders had a very high baseball IQ, but he'd need to spend some time in the minors gaining experience before I'd be comfortable handing him the Mariner's job.

Pie = Felix Pie?
I was so disappointed when I found out his last name isn't pronounced like the food.
