Well, how odd
A true statement derived from a misunderstanding.

umm
...right, because the Mariners are able to give him the God-like status he has in Japan?

A "God-like" white man...
...in the most racist country on Earth? That's a surprise. He must be short ;)

he is, but that's not the point
when the Marines won the Japan Series in 2005, the city named a streat after him, the Lotte fast food chain made up a "Bobby Burger", he was in a video with a rock band, ended up in ads and TV shows all over the goddamn place, etc.  He gets to pretty much be the manager and take a hand in personnel decisions like a general manager for the Marines -- when they're trying to recruit draftees, Bobby  makes the trip down to Okinawa and hangs out with the kid and his family and friends... or goes to Taiwan, etc, etc.  Just the sort of stuff you don't see managers doing in America.

And of course, he's also pretty much become an ambassador for Japanese baseball in the last year or two now that the NPB exodus has renewed interest... it's a lot easier for these random media sources to interview him for a quote or two in English than to hire a translator or to figure out WHO to interview in Japan anyway.

Japan is not even
the most racist country in Asia.

Unfortunately, populations in many east Asian countries have pretty racist attitudes, especially towards black people.

While I'd like that
Yeah, he's a lot happier with the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan than the M's or any big league club here could possibly make him.

when was Johjima platooing??
I love Bobby V!, but I don't remember Kenji ever being platooned?

If we had to go with a veteran manager
Bobby Valentine has always been my first choice. That guy reeks of awesomeness and correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't he have a very good relationship with Ichiro.

Anyone willing
to wear a disguise to get back in the dugout after getting ejected is THE MAN.

Valentine
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Bobby Valentine a fervid proponent of small ball?  If I recall, I really disliked him as a manager for that very attribute.

I'm a Mets fan,
and followed him a lot when he was with the Mets. I wouldn't say that he is a fervid proponent of small ball; rather, that he has leanings that way.

Uhhhh
He's the least small-ball manager in Japan.  No joke.  Even Trey Hillman totally went the small-ball route last year, leading the PL in bunts.

Literally, the Fighters had 133 sac bunts in 2006.  The rest of the league averaged around 120.

Bobby Valentine's Chiba Lotte Marines had 57.

In 2005, when the Marines won the Japan series, they had 56 bunts.  The league average was still 80.

So if you put a manager in a small-ball league and he doesn't play small-ball at all, what does that mean?

Heh, I perfectly willing
to admit that my memory suck; It's been some time since he managed the Mets.

I just remembered, probably wrongly, that he had leanings that way. Meaning that he would maybe play small ball if he had the players to do so.

right, and what I'm saying is
he has a team full of small-ball guys right now (not counting Julio Zuleta, teehee).  But that's not his style.

Speaking of small ball and the
advantages/disadvantages (mostly disadvantages) inherent within...

Deanna (or anybody else with good knowledge of the NPB), is there a sabermetrics camp at all in Japan?

I reject your reality and substitute my own!

At all? Yes. What you're probly thinking? No.
What exactly are you asking?
