Quotes on King Felix's 1-Hitter

"He had everything going on tonight. He was just impossible," Boston's David Ortiz said.

"There was no room for error the way Hernandez was throwing," Red Sox manager Terry Francona told reporters, calling the Seattle pitcher "borderline unhittable."

ESPN has "King of Fenway" on main page and someone reported "Dice King" too!

Can't wait to see what Schilling has to say on his blog...

How about using the thread to post all the quotes you find.

How about this one!!!
"He had the best stuff I have seen in the last five or six years," Sox slugger David Ortiz said of Hernandez. "He could have a career like you couldn't even imagine. Nolan Ryan. Pedro Martinez. Curt Schilling. He could have a career like that if he takes care of himself."

Schilling just threw up a quick Q/A post but
nothing yet on the game. Though I imagine he will cause he's been talking about Dice-K making his home debut.

More Francona
"It was a night there was no room for error," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona. "You know, the way Hernandez was throwing, you have to put up zeroes or you're in trouble."
[...]
It's just that there was no response for Hernandez Wednesday night. There was nothing Matsuzaka or anyone else could have done about that.

King Felix on the game
"That was fun," a smiling Hernandez said after his one-hit, complete-game masterpiece.

I think Hargrove might of enjoyed that a little
too much.

Youkilis
"He's got great stuff," Youkilis said. "He's got everything people say when they talk about him. He was unbelievable tonight. For him, if he just throws strikes, he's going to dominate."

Pain is the great teacher
And Felix through a season of mediocrity about what it's like to suck, and it led him to work like a monster to be what he is capable of.

ESPN
Shows a news bit on Dallas Cowboy Drew Bledsoe retiring after 14 NFL seasons followed immediately by the "1-Hit Shutouts at Fenway Park" graphic (by accident).

Neil Everett: "...Bledsoe wraps up his career in the Top Ten in NFL History for Passing Yards, Touchdowns, and attempts, but lemme tell you this......HE'S NO FELIX HERNANDEZ!"

Neil Everett is one of the few bright spots
on ESPN. After all, he managed to work in a "You're with me, leather" joke onto SportsCenter one time (leading to a suspension, of course).

From ESPN's "DIamond Daily"
Mark Simon writes:

"Hernandez's effort was as good as any to take place against the Red Sox at Fenway Park in the last 50 years"

Richie Sexson
"We got into the sixth, and you start to get lighter on your feet," said first baseman Richie Sexson.

"You feel like you can catch everything at that point. In the seventh, it got to where, 'OK, anything hit, I'm going to run out to right field to get it.' And if you can't get it, at least make it look like an error. Anything you can do to keep it alive."

Spotted on USSM
I’m not a Mariners fan; in fact, I’m guessing I’ve seen only 10 or 11 Mariners games since I started watching baseball (2003). I’m a Cardinals fan, and I get the pleasure of watching Albert Pujols day in and day out.

Felix Hernandez almost makes me wish I was a Mariners fan instead.

Noted without comment.

Surviving Grady
Some beauties:

The Felix Hernandez Steps On Your Nuts Show

Not much else to say about this one; it was all Hernandez all the time, and his stuff was positively nasty, especially that wicked two-seam fastball that kept making Tek shift out of the way before it arced itself back toward the plate.

Not to take anything away from Matsuzaka. He kept Ichiro in check (even knocking him down at one point -- sure to be the front page photo on every newspaper in Japan this morning) and made a nice grab of a low Lugo throw to complete a double play in the seventh. Put simply, he was good. He just wasn't as good as Hernandez, who was literally unhittable.

From Boston Herald
linky
He proved that last night, striking out Coco Crisp [stats] on a pair of simply unfair hammer curves, then freezing Manny Ramirez [stats] with a 97 mph fastball with movement in the seventh.
“He was throwing 95 mph sinkers that looked like they were moving six feet,” second baseman Dustin Pedroia said. “It was ridiculous.”
Designated hitter David Ortiz saluted Hernandez’ ability to command everything even as it moved.
“He reminded me of Freddy Garcia when he first came up,” Ortiz said. “He has unbelievable stuff. It’s not just the speed, it’s the movement of his pitches. He had all his (expletive).”

Tom Singer talking about Red Sox fans
"They had come to bow to Daisuke Matsuzaka, and soon were bowing before Felix Hernandez. Honor of one man turned into dread of another.

They were drawn to the park to root for Dice-K, and to flashbulbs at his epic rendezvous with Ichiro Suzuki, and ended up rooting against the unthinkable.

They had come to see the man who would be emperor, and wound up getting the man who already is King. "
