Pete Rose bet on Reds every night
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2798498
Pete Rose bet on the Reds every night while he managed them, and told Dan Patrick about it today on his ESPN radio show.
Random pre-pro baseball Rose Facts:
Rose grew up in a working-class area of nearby Anderson Ferry, Ohio as one of four children to Harry and LaVerne Rose, and was encouraged as a young boy to participate in sports. His father, who played semi-professional football, was the biggest influence on Pete and his sports career.
He played both baseball and football at Western Hills High School. Rose paid so little attention to his studies in ninth grade that his teacher decreed he would have to attend summer school or be held back. His father kept Rose out of summer school: it was better for his son to repeat a year of school, Harry Rose said, than miss a season playing ball.
Pete Rose was a member of the Order of DeMolay as a young man and is a member of their Hall of Fame.

Don't give a crap
Baseball should put out a restraining order on Rose requiring him to stay 500 yards away at all times.

Haha yeah
Now if he wasn't betting on them to lose and was fixing it so they lost, then you have a problem.

I think
If he has the same amount riding on every game, he's not likely to hold back on winning that one (like not using a good relief pitcher and choosing a scrub) knowing that he has no money going tonight but will tomorrow.
I still voted no he shouldn't get in. Its the wrong message to send to the rest of players. "Sure break our rules, if you are good enough we'll just change them later to accomodate you".

Lying Scumbag

Hmmm...
If it's the lying, which I admit is a much more serious issue, I still think he should be allowed in. I'm not well read on the Pete Rose issue, but might he have lied simply to avoid getting into serious trouble? Or was he just lying...? Either way, he's a lot less of a jerk than many hall of famers, undoubtedly.

betting vs other infractions
If you were to ask me, I think this actually does go back to the Black Sox Scandal. Baseball got burned really bad by it and I think because of that, betting/gambling is a bigger no-no than it should be.
I will be interested to see how it plays out with steroids. You can make an argument, I suppose, that tantrums and off-field shenanigans shouldn't affect a player's chances (as they are really character issues and not performance-related). Steroids can not really make the same claim. Ask me again in 30 years.

No!
In the end, I don't see why he should be punished for breaking a nonsense rule when other guys who were total jerks are in the HOF, with many more on the way. Pete Rose is the hits leader; he bet on baseball. Okay. I fail to see what is wrong with that. If it really is as simple as "he broke a rule" well, that's stupid. This is analagous to getting a life sentence for possession of marijuana. I wouldn't expect hooting and hollering if someone got life for pot, so why gambling?
