Pete Rose bet on Reds every night

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2798498

Pete Rose bet on the Reds every night while he managed them, and told Dan Patrick about it today on his ESPN radio show.

Random pre-pro baseball Rose Facts:
Rose grew up in a working-class area of nearby Anderson Ferry, Ohio as one of four children to Harry and LaVerne Rose, and was encouraged as a young boy to participate in sports. His father, who played semi-professional football, was the biggest influence on Pete and his sports career.

He played both baseball and football at Western Hills High School. Rose paid so little attention to his studies in ninth grade that his teacher decreed he would have to attend summer school or be held back. His father kept Rose out of summer school: it was better for his son to repeat a year of school, Harry Rose said, than miss a season playing ball.

Pete Rose was a member of the Order of DeMolay as a young man and is a member of their Hall of Fame.

Don't give a crap
he bet on baseball. It's been known for a century that you do that, you get banned.

Baseball should put out a restraining order on Rose requiring him to stay 500 yards away at all times.

I really could care less
about whether he bet on his team.  Maybe it would help Hargrove try to make some smarter decisions if he had some of his own $$ riding on each game.

Haha yeah
That's why I've never seen a problem with Rose betting on the Reds to win. I mean, isn't it his job as a manager to have his team win anyways?

Now if he wasn't betting on them to lose and was fixing it so they lost, then you have a problem.

I think
Its actually better if he did bet on them every night.  At least that way a no bet is not like voting that they will lose.

If he has the same amount riding on every game, he's not likely to hold back on winning that one (like not using a good relief pitcher and choosing a scrub) knowing that he has no money going tonight but will tomorrow.

I still voted no he shouldn't get in.  Its the wrong message to send to the rest of players.  "Sure break our rules, if you are good enough we'll just change them later to accomodate you".

Bah
I think I'd go with whatever answer would make him fade away faster. I guess once/if he gets in, after the initial hoopla, we won't have to hear about him or listen to him again. Just go away.

Lying Scumbag
If Shoeless Joe doesn't get in, there's no way this guy does..........

Hmmm...
It seems illogical to me that professional pricks like Ty Cobb, all the other pricks, and soon, people who achieved their success in large part due to steroid use, are going to be in the hall of fame, and the hits leader is not. Not because he killed a child, not because he took steroid, not because he through fits on the field and acted like a 3 year old child (how many HOF'ers did that, I wonder?), but because he bet on baseball. What is so wrong with that? I can't even classify that as immoral. He broke a rule, big deal. Isn't there something wrong with throwing tantrums on the field? Shouldn't there be a rule against that?

If it's the lying, which I admit is a much more serious issue, I still think he should be allowed in. I'm not well read on the Pete Rose issue, but might he have lied simply to avoid getting into serious trouble? Or was he just lying...? Either way, he's a lot less of a jerk than many hall of famers, undoubtedly.

betting vs other infractions
You make a good point here.

If you were to ask me, I think this actually does go back to the Black Sox Scandal. Baseball got burned really bad by it and I think because of that, betting/gambling is a bigger no-no than it should be.

I will be interested to see how it plays out with steroids. You can make an argument, I suppose, that tantrums and off-field shenanigans shouldn't affect a player's chances (as they are really character issues and not performance-related). Steroids can not really make the same claim.  Ask me again in 30 years.

No
I can be a really nice guy and steal things, or I can be a complete and utter bastard and never do anything illegal.

Which version of me should go to jail?

Hmmm...
Was that Coach Owens' voice I heard chiming in with a "both!" from the back of the blog?

;-)

Iceberg, right ahead!

No!
What are you saying? What did Pete Rose "steal", and how is he an utter bastard? He's a baseball... somewhat gruff. We've got a lot of those, and they make the game more enjoyable. Betting is not stealing; he did not steal from baseball and he did not even bet against his team. Children bet. Betting is about one of the least offensive things I can think of that can potentially be illegal... if you choose to gamble your money, that is your choice.

In the end, I don't see why he should be punished for breaking a nonsense rule when other guys who were total jerks are in the HOF, with many more on the way. Pete Rose is the hits leader; he bet on baseball. Okay. I fail to see what is wrong with that. If it really is as simple as "he broke a rule" well, that's stupid. This is analagous to getting a life sentence for possession of marijuana. I wouldn't expect hooting and hollering if someone got life for pot, so why gambling?

I was making an analogy.
He broke a baseball law and the consequences of that law were known. He did it anyway.

by Graham on Mar 17, 2007 11:04 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah
I understand. I'm just saying that, the way I see it, a lot of genuinely bad guys are in the HOF right now, and guys who are not only really bad, but cheated by using steroids are going to be joining the HOF soon. It seems absurd to say "I'm going to punish you for bad behavior, and that includes gambling, but all you guys who took steroids or were total pricks, you're fine". Pete Rose is the hits leader. That's amazing. He never took steroids. All he did was bet on baseball. Sure, it was really stupid, and he should have been punished, severely even, but this is too much. You don't punish a gambler like this and then ignore the fellows on steroids, and the people who were human garbage sitting in the HOF right now..

I'm not particularly cool with
Some of the jerks in the HoF, true, but they haven't actually broken the letter of the law, as I see it. The fact that said law is pretty stupid is a whole other issue.
