Dodgers Sign A. Jones

Andruw, that is.

Per the Dodgers' website, they signed him to a 2/36 million deal.

This moves Juan Pierre to LF, where he is still horribly overpaid, and frees up either Ethier or Matt Kemp for a trade.

I like Coletti's approach on FA deals - shorter term, a bit more money.  I can handle that.  Now if he'd only let LaRoche, Kemp, and Loney play...

18 mil
per year for Andruw Jones?
Crap, where is baseball heading?

Well that was sudden
and it's good for Jones, because he gets a lot of money for two years and a chance to re-enter the market on a high while he's still somewhat young.

I was going to type
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!11111111

when I saw the headline, but this is almost reasonable. If only they knew what the rest of us knew the last time they went shopping.

Wow, everybody wins in that deal.
Dodgers are going to have a lot of money to spend in 2 years.

Can someone tell me
why this is a good deal?!

by KC on Dec 5, 2007 11:14 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

He's overpaid
But only for two years.  So Jones gets to make a lot of money, but Dodgers don't have to commit to someone who had a terrible year last year.

Would they count it as 2 years
or 3, since 5.1 million of the signing bonus is due in 2010.  Do teams usually count thatagainst, in this instance, the '08 and '09 payroll, or against the payroll during the season it is actually paid?

Also
If Jones bounces back, he's still really valuable. And he's young enough that he may not be suffering from Sexsonism. He may have just had a bad year.

it's just not a bad one either.

As a Mariner fan
this move is going to look brilliant in a few days.

So much for me doubting Kuroda getting 4/44. I just hope I'm still right about the Mariners not committing to that.

Why?
This is a market where Jose Guillen gets $36M. Where Torii Hunter got $90M.

Also, he does NOT cost a draft pick. Depending on what value you place on a 1st round pick, you can subtract that amount from the $36M.

Why would you put Juan Pierre in a corner
OF spot?  If thats the case I want Andre Ethier or Kemp.

by Edgar for Pres on Dec 5, 2007 11:18 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Hmm..
<u>Remaining salary obligations</u&gt:

Juan Pierre:  $36.5 million through 2011
Andre Ethier:  ~$400k
Matt Kemp:  ~$400k

Ok so if they really are going to stick with
A. Jones and Pierre for two more years then give me one of your two studs that you won't use.

by Edgar for Pres on Dec 6, 2007 7:37 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

But really?
Are Either or Kemp availble?  I'd give them fair value.

Remaining salary obligations in 2007:
Melky Cabrera: ~$400k

Johnny Damon: $39M through 2009.

But, but, Torre has a veteran fetish and buries young players. Or at least young players other than Robinson Cano, Melky Cabrera and Wang Chien Ming.

You'd think for $36M they could get him
for three years. Or they could have tossed in a few extra million for that additional season.

Crazy.

by Katal LM on Dec 6, 2007 7:29 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Nah
Higher annual salary than Torii Hunter at 36.2 for 2 years.  He probably wouldn't commit a 3rd year for just a few million more, especially since he'll still be 32 years old at the end of this contract and potentially in line for another sizeable deal.

Side Note
Gillick grabs another former M. Travis Blackley was chosen by Philly in the Rule 5 draft.

They got the Veteran player
the players were saying they needed more of.

Can the M's Please trade some of our veteran players for their young studs?
