GU VS WSU

This year's greatest Northwest Men's College Basket matchup is happening tonight. I know most of you don't care, but I have to show some Spokane pride. Not to mention, the winter meetings are going to suck. I predict a hard fought 63-60 Bulldog victory.

Any other predictions?

One-line diaries are prohibited on Lookout Landing. Give your diary a bit more thought, then give it another shot. If you have nothing to add to your proposed diary, then it probably belongs as a comment under another appropriate thread.
The minimum is 300 characters.

I really don't think there is an appropriate thread. Besides, I rarely post diaries.

WSU 74, GU 73 in overtime
This has been a great game the last couple years.  It should be extremely exciting.

Casinos too
unfortunately they'll be fucking packed and it will be difficult to get in-- because the only way to get ESPNU is to 1) get directTV, and 2) buy the premium sports package.  Fuck you ESPN.

There is no OT with diaries.
Go Zags!

Go Zags!
I forgot that they were playing UConn in Boston last weekend, so I failed to either go to the game or even watch it on TV.  To punish me, the game was thrilling and the Zags won.

Don't know who's going to win this one, but it's great to see Eastern Washington on the national sports map.

I hope my alma mater crushes the Pansies of the Palouse.  My guess 75-60 GU

Go Cougs!!!!!!
This is a great rivalry that has been almost as exciting as the Apple Cup the last 2 years, and I'm rooting for my Cougs to bring home another W. As someone who has a hard time accepting basketball as a sport, I really don't have anything else to contribute.

I have allegiances to both

(is that possible? can I have more than one allegiance?)

GU 70 Wazzu 67.

And some teams run and hide from Gonzaga.

by Shawk on Dec 5, 2007 11:55 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Etowns Keys
  1. Gonzaga's 3 pt shooting. Teams that have beaten the Cougars in the last two years have shot the lights out from behind the arc.
  2. Aron Baynes. If WSU gets him going early WSU probably wins this game. Baynes can easily score 20 while getting the Zags bigmen in foul trouble. If Baynes gets into foul trouble I think the Cougs are in trouble.
  3. Turnovers. Washington State under the Bennetts have kept the turnovers down to a minimum, but if Gonzaga plays aggressive I think they can force a few more turnovers than normal.
I think the Cougs win this one because of experience but I wouldn't put money on it. It will probably come down to the wire.

Doesn't at least one key
have to do with experience, or have I been watching too many Fox baseball broadcasts?

Of course, you haven't really gone anything since 1991, but a man can dream.  Nice tourney run last year, though.

Zags 78, Cougs 72
Gonzaga Basketball is the only thing getting me up  in the morning these days, sportswise. Well, that and Kevin Durant.

I'd be lying if I said I was confident about tonight's game, though. GU's dealt me too many nutshots over the past few years for me to put much faith in their big-game performances.

How I wish I was still an undergrad...

I'm skipping the gym and running home after work
for this one. I'm not a big basketball fan, but this team (and last year's) is the first time a WSU team has been good at something since I graduated.

Go Cougs! And hooray for ESPNU! (I often forget it even exists, let alone that I get it at home.)

Go Bruins!!
vs WSU 1/12/08, @ WSU 2/7/08

vs Gonzaga 3/23/06
and i think we all know how that one turned out =)

I'M GOING!!!! WOOOOO!!!!
Honestly, GU is gonna destroy Wazzu.  It's not that GU is that much better team, but the homecourt advantage is almost indescribable.  If you didn't go the the UW game at GU last year you have no idea how crazy it gets.  It's literally the loudest most energy filled thing you'll ever be a part of for a ranked team coming into the Kennel.

I know people who were neutral fans going to the UW game last year who said the only way to describe the Kennel's fan's craziness is by the scene in the Lord of the Rings where the Orcs are marching to go slaughter everyone.

That said... Gonzaga 82, Wazzu 71

I think you're underestimating
the Cougars' ability to put fans to sleep with their style of play.

by Teej on Dec 5, 2007 4:23 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I think you're the underestimating one...
I've been to every home game for a year and a half.  Even the in the game we lost I've NEVER seen the Kennel "put to sleep".

I don't think any team in America
will score 80 points on WSU this year. The only team that did it last year was USC, and it took two overtimes. It's just the nature of the slow, deliberate offense and swarming defense of the Cougars. They don't give up points.

by Teej on Dec 5, 2007 8:33 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Looks like they won't score 80 pts total.

No they won't
unless they have a crazy night from behind the 3pt line, it's just not happening.

theres not a chance in hell
oregon drops 80 on wsu. well maybe more than a chance, but id feel pretty good giving 4-1 or 5-1 against that happening.

of the teams in the pac ten, realistically, only oregon and zona could drop 80 on the cougs. UCLA isnt gonna score 80 on anyone, playing a deliberate style (even if we are running more this year). i'm not afraid of UW, although theyve got some talent. the other teams just flat out suck.

I always thought our home record was vastly overrated. Until tonight I can't recall a time where they played someone better than them @ home.
