Bedard for ... Reply by a Camden Chat Man

" Jones and Morrow are two very exciting players, but Butler and Sherrill, if I'm looking at the right (George) Sherrill, are both lefty relievers.

For Tejada the Os received three pitchers, an outfielder likely to be flipped, and a third baseman.  Why would they need more arms?  The Os system is flooded with fantastic to reasonable arms, why do they need more?  Even on the major league roster there are enough relievers.  There need to be more position prospects.

I don't see a deal like this going through without some substitutions.  Jones and Morrow, heck yeah.  Throw in Wladimir Balentien and Carlos Triunfel or Michael Saunders and that sounds like a good deal.  But an outfielder and three relievers is not a good return for a pitcher of Bedard's caliber."

I don't know about you, but I don't like that idea at all. I realize pitching wins ball games, but gutting your farm system doesn't breed consistent winning, Look at the Indians and Brewers. They committed to their young guys and their franchises look to be in pretty good shape,

AND, one pitcher, as good as he may be, won't be the answer to the M's questions. Last time i checked there were 9 players and one fat DH trying to win ball games. The Yanks have tried the one great player thing with A-Rod, and what do ya know? They haven't won, cuz the supporting cast sucked when it became crunch time.

No way are we sending Wlad
Adam, Morrow, Clement, and Butler (if you want him.)

Dear Bill Ba-broken-vasi,
Don't send Wlad, or George. Thank you.

What?
No.

Sherrill + Balentien are the biggest expendable trade chips we have.

Yeahhhhhh
That's an outfielder, two starter prospects, and a shutdown setup guy. 3/4 would be better than -every- player received in the Tejada deal.

The players we must try to keep at all costs are Jones, Clement, and Triunfel. They're more than welcome to Saunders and Balentien, though.

I'd argue...
a package of Jones/Morrow/Wlad and Triunfel or Saunders for Bedard is better than the package for the Colon deal (the Indians got Lee, Sizemore and Phillips, plus Lee Stevens for salary reasons).

How well did that trade work out for Montreal and Cleveland, by the way? Ohhh, yeah, right.

What did you guys expect?
Imagine if Felix was on the block (I know age makes him more valuable).  Bedard is the O's ace right now and is one of the best pitchers in baseball.  Plus the O's don't need to trade him.  If I'm an O's fan I'm demanding the world for him.  Their FO won't get it but if I'm a fan, thats what I want.

hmm...
so you're saying, that if, let us say, ichiro was on the block. That it would be logical and reasonable to ask the dodgers for Ethier, Kemp, Hu, Kenshaw, Andruw Jones, Andy Laroche, Broxton, Billingsley, and ah hell while we're at it Penny. That doesn't work. There's a line between how much you'd wish the player would get, and what's a legit trade for both sides.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
"Jones and Morrow, heck yeah.  Throw in Wladimir Balentien and Carlos Triunfel or Michael Saunders and that sounds like a good deal."

Sure. If I could get you to give me ten dimes for that quarter I have, it would sound like a good deal.

Oh good god...
Do they really think that they're going to get the top 6 prospects in the M's system?

One of which is a B+/A- level prospect and the other is an A+ level prospect?

Give me a break. They are in a position to ask for a lot, but they are being ridiculous.

Why not demand Aumont as a PTBNL as well?

Wow, I hope most
O's fans aren't this delusional.

I mean this guy might as well ask for the whole M's minor league system including stadiums/coaches the whole lot.

Why would the O's, with their terrible bullpen, not want Sherill? he'd immediately become their best relief pitcher.

I'm frankly against getting Bedard. That aside I know he's a great pitcher who's had one amazing year, one great year, and a couple pretty solid years. There are some drawbacks.

he has a history of injury/never thrown 200 innings
most likely a rent-a-player
O's asking as much as Santana

The most that I'd be willing to give up now is probably Wlad and Morrow, but I'm not Bavasi. I think getting blinded by a need for a #1 pitcher is really dangerous and I hope Wild Bill doesn't pull off another one of his gem trades again.

Asking for Triunfel is a laugh, he's probably the most untouchable player in the entire system outside Ichiro and Felix. Also, I think people are getting the wrong impression with Morrow thinking he's a reliever. His future is in the rotation, the bullpen is really just a safety for him.

As far as AJ goes, trading him away would leave the M's with a big hole in the field and lineup. Who else on the market has his blend of tools, even if he takes awhile to adjust batting in the Majors, his defense and speed would make him valuable.

I also wouldn't want to buy high on a player like we did with Beltre. I know Beltre has come around but he'll never have another 2004 season. Bedard's track record isn't Santana's.

If we were closer to contending for a World Series I'd be more for this, but the truth is we're not. We need to keep building for the future and push for a title in a few years, not hope to get to the playoffs with a first round exit and then a number of years in the shithole.
