It Was The Worst Of Times

Up yours, Ken Rosenthal.

The move, which helps the Dodgers counter the Diamondbacks' acquisition Friday of right-hander Dan Haren, is a significant blow to the Mariners, who were among the teams bidding heavily for Kuroda.

The Mariners, trying to add two starting pitchers, have spoken extensively with the Orioles about a trade for left-hander Erik Bedard and will now intensify their pursuits of free-agent righties Carlos Silva and Kyle Lohse, sources said.

Just woke up
OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO..............

And WTF, how does Ken Rosenthal know EXACTLY what we're going to do next anyway?

Please, keep us away from the land of failure!

It's simple.
Bavasi has cash to spend and a proven record of going after whatever warm bodies exist on the FA market.

If I were him, I'd go "We're going to save our cash and kids for July", take fliers on low-risk guys and maybe extend a one year deal to Colon, and if June/July rolls around, you have money to take a big contract and kids as well. If the market sucks now, wait until it doesn't.

Silva is a homosexual?

no
he meant gay as in queer. As in its strange Kuroda signed with LA.

by Mere Tantalisers on Dec 15, 2007 5:59 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Are you being serious?
Because that's obviously not what he meant. He meant "gay" as in stupid/bad, which is not what it means.

It's like we just got a hurricane warning
In Mariner news today, A category 5 Bavasi-cane is forming and should hit land by late this week.  We are expecting dangerous tradewinds and strongly advise to keep all prospects locked away in the basement safely away from the Bavasi-cane.

Bavasi + No Kuroda = Goodbye Adam Jones.

Boo-hoo. :(

It's the inside straight
Bavasi lost that deal. Will he now lay down five and ask for a refill attempting a royal flush of the farm and AJ for Silva and Lohse? I don't think so. He saw the burned earth of a farm system that Gillick left him and put his pride in a rebuild. I'd like to see him give up here, Start AJ and Morrow and, like Bert Lahr, wait until July.

If we land Bedard
I cannot foresee Bavasi shelling out big bucks and a multi-year on another FA SP. I think he'd go more towards a Jeff Weaver type signing.

Bedard-Felix-Colon-Washburn-Batista would be pretty nice.

I don't like having to choose
between Bedard for Jones+ or Silva/Lohse for big money.

Why the fuck would anybody
want to pay Kyle Loshe to pitch anywhere? For any amount of money. Ever.

n Germany, they came first for the Communists...
It's hard to not see the downward spiral, after following this team.  I'd be ready to sell the farm for any chance as well, if I were Bavasi.

Also, Godwinned.

How could the M's lose Kuroda?
Didn't Lincoln tell him about the family-friendly environment?  Show him the attendance figures?  Tell him how well the M's treat aging veterans?

I just don't understand...

by Tom2000 on Dec 15, 2007 11:33 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

His agent and advisors
And probably the Dodgers countered that with numbers of what pitchers do in the NL vs. the AL. Exhibit A was likely Jeff Weaver. He turned down 4 year deals in favor of a 3 year (according to some stuff referenced on mlbtraderumors even LA offered him 4) so he could test the waters again in 3 years when he still has some value. I have a very sick feeling in my stomach he's going to come back then, touting moderately passable numbers from his NL stint, and throw those offers in our face... Being even more of an established vet he'll be even more marketable to the M's then.

Question
would the M's be adverse to trading for Blanton?

by Zonis on Dec 16, 2007 12:21 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Never going to happen
Bavasi won't be a major deal within the division.

by Matthew on Dec 16, 2007 12:22 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

With a policy like that
aren't you just telling everybody that you know you get screwed on the deals you make.

by Edgar for Pres on Dec 16, 2007 12:26 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

No
Most teams have the same policy.

by Matthew on Dec 16, 2007 12:42 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Well its still a stupid policy
If you think the trade would help you more than the other team you do it.  If you are wrong then you are wrong but hopefully you are right more than you're wrong.

by Edgar for Pres on Dec 16, 2007 10:26 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you
but like Bavasi said at the meet, what's the last major intra-division trade you can think of?

by Jeff on Dec 16, 2007 10:30 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

just baseball uses some shitty logic sometimes.

I'd love too do that trade
If Billy Beane were interested in trading Blanton for some of our crap.  Otherwise, I'd say that's pretty much an impossibility.

by ThundaPC on Dec 16, 2007 8:07 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Silva or Lohse?
Seriously, neither of them deserves a one year deal, let alone three or more.
  1. Hernandez
  2. Washburn
  3. Lohse/Silva
  4. Batista
  5. HoRam
Kill me now, Lord!

by JoeyJoJoJuniorShabadoo on Dec 16, 2007 6:34 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Silva is completely reasonable
in a Washburn or Batista kind of way. The problem is that he's going to be getting paid way too much.

Like another poster said, Lohse shouldn't be anywhere near a Major League-level rotation.

Remember when the Rangers signed Chan Ho Park for $15M a season, and Scott Boras declared that $15M is the going rate for an ace? I thought he was full of bunk, but I miss those halcyon days.

by Katal LM on Dec 16, 2007 8:52 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Silva's home-road splits suck, though.
He pitches considerably worse away from the Metrodome.

On a team where the infield might be Sexson/Loretta/Yuni/Beltre, I get nervous.
