Actually, that's a good point
Arroyo is really, really white.

From Wikipedia:

In 2005, Bronson Arroyo released his debut album, Covering the Bases. It included covers from bands such as Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots and Foo Fighters. The album also includes the Red Sox victory song Dirty Water by The Standells, in which Arroyo is accompanied by Johnny Damon, Lenny DiNardo, and Kevin Youkilis. He also taught Kevin Millar how to play guitar and performed vocals for the song Tessie as covered by the Dropkick Murphys.

A lot of WFB's honkiness doesn't show up
in box scores, so it can't be tabulated.

It's thought that Willie has so much of this hidden 'dark honky' in him, that it actually makes up well over half of his mass.   In fact, if he didn't, his observable honkiness would simply collapse into a large copy of vanity fair, sitting on a bruce springsteen cd.

What do I look like, a guy who's not lazy?

by Rollo Tomasi on Dec 13, 2007 4:01 PM PST up reply actions

Every conversation I have ever had
with people that have been "born again" or had some sort of religious awakening, and I have had a few, has invariably included at least one attempt to get me to a) go to church with them to "see for myself", b) take a free bible so I can "read for myself", or c) guilt me into renouncing my agnostic ways so I can "save myself".

I cannot speak for Mr. Hulett, but I have a feeling that it'd be the same with him after looking at that site.

As I said, and will continue to say - people can believe in God if they want.  They can believe in Allah, Jehovah, Ganesh, they can even believe in a sacred naked mole rat as a savior, for all I care.  Just don't try to make me believe it as well.  Live and let live.

Since when is giving unsolicited advice ok?
If I said "I think you should lose weight!" to randoms in the street, their (entirely appropriate) answer would be "Oi, fuck off"

by Graham MacAree on Dec 13, 2007 5:39 PM PST up reply actions

As someone who's done some proselytizing...
...I didn't give out "advice".  I offered to share something that made me happy,  i.e. when you find something cool - you share it with others.

Can't speak for everyone though, there are some pushy people out there too.  It's sad that people paint everyone with the same brush, though.

by Manzanillos Cup on Dec 13, 2007 5:55 PM PST up reply actions

What about
Do you do "nice things" for random people?

by Manzanillos Cup on Dec 13, 2007 5:59 PM PST up reply actions

I drag them off mountains
I'm not sure the situation is comparable.

by Graham MacAree on Dec 13, 2007 6:02 PM PST up reply actions

Ah, but to them it is comparable.
A lot of Christians consider proselytizing the greatest random act of kindness they can do.  Inviting someone to "be saved" to them is the ultimate "opening a door for a stranger".

It's all a matter of perspective.

by Manzanillos Cup on Dec 13, 2007 6:11 PM PST up reply actions

My perspective is that that's incredibly offensive
SAR missions put our members under huge amounts of physical and mental (especially when we have to deal with severe injuries or death) stress, and to say that what we do is comparable to harassing random people on the street...

I think if someone made that opinion known in front of me, I'd have thrown a punch before they finished their first sentence.

by Graham MacAree on Dec 13, 2007 6:19 PM PST up reply actions

Uhh, you misunderstood.
I wasn't trivializing other altruistic behavior, or even saying that "preaching" or whatever you want to call it is more brave or anything.  I'm just saying that if you have the perspective that you are helping someone out with their eternal well-being and all that, well to those with that belief that's a pretty big thing that goes beyond life and death.

You don't have that belief, so to you I guess it's just "harassing".  But like I said, in my opinion, if you feel like you are being harassed, than it's just being done wrong.

BTW, what kind of SAR do you do?  I sell SAR equipment.

One more thing
You might be very good about avoiding being pushy and all that - if this is true well done, and I'm sorry if you're offended by my broad generalisation.

However, I find that assuming everyone with a cause is going to be insanely annoying helps me avoid all of that entirely. I'm all about efficiency, and if I don't have a few good conversations every now and then, it's worth the risk.

by Graham MacAree on Dec 13, 2007 6:01 PM PST up reply actions

Oh, not offended at all.
I'm friends with a lot of people who think the same way.  I was always grateful when people who weren't interested wouldn't waste my time.

by Manzanillos Cup on Dec 13, 2007 6:20 PM PST up reply actions

I'm not trying to disregard your beliefs
or get into any kind of moral argument or anything, I respect your opinion completely. But I'm a semi-active member in the United Church of Christ. The way in which we do outreach to make people happy is by hosting community events in our church. For instance we hold a community choir for children, singing non-religious songs outside of service and opening our doors to anyone who wants to come in. It's been a boon for outreach because then when people think "Hey, I want to give church a shot" they come to our church because their kid has been singing there twice a week. We do passive outreach of that nature, not going and knocking on people's doors. Some people just don't want to hear about it and there's no point in wasting their time.

by Corco on Dec 13, 2007 6:25 PM PST up reply actions

Totally agree
Going out and randomly talking to people on the street or knocking on doors is probably the least effective way of "spreading the word" or whatever you want to call it.  I tried to avoid that whenever possible.

by Manzanillos Cup on Dec 13, 2007 6:39 PM PST up reply actions

See, now, that I can totally respect
because it's not intruding on anybody's turf or forcing them to hear something they don't want to hear.  And as far as I can tell, nobody gets hit on the head with a stick and dragged to the church against their will.

If I know that sort of thing is going on, and I don't want to be involved, I stay away from the church where it's happening. Easy enough, everyone's happy.

When people knock on my door despite my "no soliciting" sign ("but we're not selling anything!"), when people talk to me on the bus even when I'm wearing headphones, that's when I start having problems.

Ah, c'mon...
...admit it, you've thumped the bible more than once.  As one who's proselytized as well, I've done pretty much everything.

Nowadays, the advice that I find that works the best is to a) Follow Luke 10:27 and b) Remember St. Francis/Mother Teresa, etc. who said "Preach the Gospel, use words if necessary" and c) Let God be the judge, it's not your job...

So, yeah, I fail miserably all the time at these.  But that's to be expected.  No one is perfect, especially me.  Not all Christians are pushy.  But, yeah, the ones that are are most definitely annoying.
