Around SBN: Doug Flutie's Hail Mary, And Why College Sports Matter

Uh Ohs

Time for the hazy, threatening unknown alternative?

Japanese free agent pitcher Hiroki Kuroda appears to have chosen the Los Angeles Dodgers as his new team, baseball sources said Wednesday.

Kuroda informed the Hiroshima Carp front office of his decision on Tuesday night and is expected to leave for the United States as early as Wednesday to sign a contract with the Dodgers.

Why This Is Good: By whiffing on Kuroda, we've been presented with the opportunity to fill out the rotation with underrated, effective pitchers who can miss some bats.

Why This Is Bad: We won't.

Shit
We fucking need Bedard

Well we might just get him now...
For Jones...and Wlad...and Morrow...and Clement...and Ichiro...and Felix...

On to Plan C:

We'll get some undervalued guys
Remember- in Bavasi's mind Ho was undervalued.

by I'm NOT Corco on Dec 12, 2007 12:45 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Another bullet dodged
If Kuruda reaches his ceiling with the Dodgers, it is still better to have missed on him. Being an M's fan is painful.

Santana, Haren, Bedard-----proven.

Blanton, Kuruda, Lohse, Silva---unproven.

Why is this equation so hard for Bavasi.

How much would Asdrubal Cabrara add to any tarde for an Ace?

How many years do I need to go to school to become the M's Gm, becasue watching stupid people do stupid things (and paying good money to see it done is just plain....stupid).

Maybe we'll make a bold statement and trade for a fringe number 3 that's aging.  Livean Hernandez, "the innings eater", and most likely the next shitty Mariner.

by Squigley on Dec 12, 2007 12:52 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Yep
Livan Hernandez has "Mariner" all over him. He used to be good, he's got this reputation as a durable innings eater and Lord knows we need an innings eater. He's even got recent postseason experience.

Extreme longshot at a silver lining:
If we sign him, when he pitches we can all get so sauced that we think it's another Felix day. Something tells me we'd all get good at figuring out how many beers it takes to blur numbers by the end of April.

Wow.
I'm surprised. McLaren seemed to have a man crush on him. I didn't think Bavasi would give up.

I don't know if it matters, but
I just watched the Japanese sports news on three channels as I usually do, and the word on Kuroda was still "Is going to America to make up his mind between the Dodgers and Mariners".

Of course, perhaps he's made up his mind in the last half hour.  Who knows.

They also had Kazushige Nagashima talking on News Zero.  He was like "I'm not going to call Kosuke Fukudome greedy, but did you realize that he'll be making $12 million next year and the entire payroll of a team like the Hiroshima Carp or Rakuten Golden Eagles is only going to be $13 million or so?"

This makes me wanna say....
Pull a Gillick and stand pat

Go with RRS and Baek/Morrow at 4 - 5 and just expect to finish above .500

Keep the roster where it is, with the exception of tendering Broussard.

Why make any more mistakes..just keep the roster in tact and pray for the best.

I went through all the SP FA
and tried to compile good/bad choices:

Good:
Jason Jennings (somebody will be stupid and overpay probably)
Bartolo Colon
Matt Clement
Kip Wells (don't know if he deserves to be here)
Rodrigo Lopez (probably longer/more $ than I want)

Mediocre:
Freddy Garcia (hurt and class B FA, tempted to move down)
Brett Tomko (tempted to move up)
John Thomson (bad but cheap)
Odalis Perez (close to being an ok choice)
Byung-Hyun Kim (no clue where to put)
Tony Armas Jr
Kris Benson
Jeff Weaver

Horrible:
Livan Hernandez
Russ Ortiz
Eric Milton
Kyle Lohse (because of price)
Josh Fogg

I kinda took into account the amount of $ they'd get and how good they are vs our availible options.  If they get a lot more than I expect then obviously that could change things.  Good doesn't neccessarily mean you are happy.  It means not complete disaster.  Mediocre is more like a Batista/Washburn signing where its not good but not a disaster.

I was surprised how hard it was for me to decide if Jeff Weaver would be a bad resigning.

by Edgar for Pres on Dec 12, 2007 10:19 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah I forgot him
I'd put Carlos Silva as mediocre probably.  He's not bad and would be an upgrade over what we have.  He also isn't that old so the years don't petrify me as much as others.  He'll get paid too much but so will almost everybody else.

by Edgar for Pres on Dec 12, 2007 10:27 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I really doubt we get Silva
I'm not sure why but I bet other teams want him more than us.

What scares me most about this
Is that Average Joe fan will be berating this missed "opportunity" a few months into the season when Kuroda puts up NL-aided numbers and looks better than 40-80% of our rotation. I'd still take him at 3/$33-36, but that's because I'm a pessimist and I really don't think we're ever going to be able to land high quality FA pitching here... So going with homegrown talent (Felix) and potentially a trade for another 1-2 guy then backfilling the rest with fill-ins like Kuroda, Batista, et al - even if a little overpaid - is the best option we have. Well, either that or pretending we have a smart FO who's willing to take a chance on a high-risk/high-reward guy and also have the short leash to pull him if/when he tanks.
We want the funk! Give up the funk!

I like that by having him around we always have someone positive to mention, before we rank on all the negatives.

Damned if you do, Damned if you don't...
I've been thinking that were the M's to land Kuroda, he'd probably be a disaster. Yet, if he lands somewhere else, especially in the NL, he'll shine.

And, of course, if they DON'T land him, then fear and loathing creeps in, since we'll get to watch Bavasi panic with plans A, B, and C all having failed.

What are the rumors with Colon, anyway?  I've wanted him more than Kuroda to begin with.

Oh no!
Now we're going to give away 3 of our 4 best prospects for Bedard!

This was expected. I just pray we dont have to trade Jones for Bedard. They can take anyone in the system...not Jones. Triunfel is inelgible for trades...

by Slica on Dec 12, 2007 11:01 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

LL's going to murder Bavasi.

Why is everyone so afraid to trade Jones?
If you don't trade Jones for a pitcher as good as Erik Bedard, what do you trade him for?  Jones is going to be good, probably an .850 OPS bat in his prime with good defense, but Bedard's one of the top 5 pitchers in baseball.  If you don't trade Jones for that, then I guess you don't trade him for anything.

by BrettJMiller on Dec 12, 2007 2:01 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't trade him for anything (to a point)
at this juncture because we desperately need his defense in the OF.

by Matthew on Dec 12, 2007 2:03 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Hmmm.
If it's defense you want, then Lofton's available (not that he's quite to Jones' caliber), and Reed's not completely awful either.  There are other options, too, of course.  I'm not saying Jones isn't special (he is), but I don't see him coming in and lighting up MLB right away (whether offensively or defensively).

I'd prefer to keep Jones, too, but you gotta believe the conversation starts with Jones. For someone of Bedard's caliber, you have to at least consider it strongly.

by Librocrat on Dec 12, 2007 2:21 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Clarifying:
I don't really want to trade Jones, as I think it's possible to get Bedard without giving up Jones, Clement, or Triunfel (the three most important prospects in our system, in my opinion) but if you absolutely have to include Jones in the offer to get Bedard, you do it.

That said, I can see Baltimore accepting a package of Wlad, Morrow, Sherrill, and Butler.  Maybe we'd have to throw in Lopez+Adam Moore and take Roberts too, but I think it's entirely possible to get that deal done without trading Jones.

In the poll the other day
In the poll the other day, I choose that I wanted him for 3@11mill or whatever it was.  It wasn't so much that I wanted as much as it was I don't want the panic move that will follow.

I'm scared.  Very, very scared.

Per Geoff Baker
Kuroda refuted the reports from Japan that he's going to the Dodgers.  He's still undecided.

Kuroda is still in play.
