Uh Ohs
Time for the hazy, threatening unknown alternative?
Kuroda informed the Hiroshima Carp front office of his decision on Tuesday night and is expected to leave for the United States as early as Wednesday to sign a contract with the Dodgers.
Why This Is Good: By whiffing on Kuroda, we've been presented with the opportunity to fill out the rotation with underrated, effective pitchers who can miss some bats.
Why This Is Bad: We won't.

Another bullet dodged
Santana, Haren, Bedard-----proven.
Blanton, Kuruda, Lohse, Silva---unproven.
Why is this equation so hard for Bavasi.
How much would Asdrubal Cabrara add to any tarde for an Ace?
How many years do I need to go to school to become the M's Gm, becasue watching stupid people do stupid things (and paying good money to see it done is just plain....stupid).
Maybe we'll make a bold statement and trade for a fringe number 3 that's aging. Livean Hernandez, "the innings eater", and most likely the next shitty Mariner.

Geoff Baker isn't sold, yet
Still... I can see Bavasi hitting the panic button now and upping the offer to four years.

I don't know if it matters, but
Of course, perhaps he's made up his mind in the last half hour. Who knows.
They also had Kazushige Nagashima talking on News Zero. He was like "I'm not going to call Kosuke Fukudome greedy, but did you realize that he'll be making $12 million next year and the entire payroll of a team like the Hiroshima Carp or Rakuten Golden Eagles is only going to be $13 million or so?"

News like this

And any other day there is Mariner "news."

This makes me wanna say....
Go with RRS and Baek/Morrow at 4 - 5 and just expect to finish above .500
Keep the roster where it is, with the exception of tendering Broussard.
Why make any more mistakes..just keep the roster in tact and pray for the best.

Not that I was sold on him, but now the FO will head to he scap heap

I went through all the SP FA
Good:
Jason Jennings (somebody will be stupid and overpay probably)
Bartolo Colon
Matt Clement
Kip Wells (don't know if he deserves to be here)
Rodrigo Lopez (probably longer/more $ than I want)
Mediocre:
Freddy Garcia (hurt and class B FA, tempted to move down)
Brett Tomko (tempted to move up)
John Thomson (bad but cheap)
Odalis Perez (close to being an ok choice)
Byung-Hyun Kim (no clue where to put)
Tony Armas Jr
Kris Benson
Jeff Weaver
Horrible:
Livan Hernandez
Russ Ortiz
Eric Milton
Kyle Lohse (because of price)
Josh Fogg
I kinda took into account the amount of $ they'd get and how good they are vs our availible options. If they get a lot more than I expect then obviously that could change things. Good doesn't neccessarily mean you are happy. It means not complete disaster. Mediocre is more like a Batista/Washburn signing where its not good but not a disaster.
I was surprised how hard it was for me to decide if Jeff Weaver would be a bad resigning.

Hooray Felix
I like that by having him around we always have someone positive to mention, before we rank on all the negatives.
by Librocrat on Dec 12, 2007 11:00 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Damned if you do, Damned if you don't...
And, of course, if they DON'T land him, then fear and loathing creeps in, since we'll get to watch Bavasi panic with plans A, B, and C all having failed.
What are the rumors with Colon, anyway? I've wanted him more than Kuroda to begin with.

Oh no!
This was expected. I just pray we dont have to trade Jones for Bedard. They can take anyone in the system...not Jones. Triunfel is inelgible for trades...

Why is everyone so afraid to trade Jones?

by BrettJMiller on Dec 12, 2007 2:01 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I wouldn't trade him for anything (to a point)
by Matthew on Dec 12, 2007 2:03 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Hmmm.
I'd prefer to keep Jones, too, but you gotta believe the conversation starts with Jones. For someone of Bedard's caliber, you have to at least consider it strongly.
by PositivePaul on Dec 12, 2007 2:19 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Adam Jones for Meche FTW!
by Librocrat on Dec 12, 2007 2:21 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Clarifying:
That said, I can see Baltimore accepting a package of Wlad, Morrow, Sherrill, and Butler. Maybe we'd have to throw in Lopez+Adam Moore and take Roberts too, but I think it's entirely possible to get that deal done without trading Jones.
