Around SBN: Can Tebow Say No To Anything?

In case you weren't aware

The Sens are really good.

Jeff and I would like to welcome you all to join us in celebrating the best opening of an NHL season in history.  Well... except for Leaf fans of course.  Nothing ruins a good party like guests crying into their beers.  I'd uninvite Duck fans too, but technically you have to exist to be worth mentioning.

Thanks
I have been really impressed with the Flyers turn around.  I didn't think that Briere would have that big of an impact, but it's nice to see him prove me wrong.  I've missed the days of the Sens-Flyers rivalry (poor Roman Cechmanek)

At the Sens-Rangers game I went to earlier
Whch was my first NHL game, the Sens scored 3 goals in 52 seconds, which was a team record. Even not being a hockey fan, I found it impressive.

Gretzky did that by himself once.
I was so spoiled growing up near Edmonton.

Wayne Gretzky
at the peak of his career Wayne Gretzky was the best team-sport athlete ever, bar none.  And I include Michael Jordan in that.

I'm so jaded these days that I don't really passionately care about much, sporting-wise, but to this day I count myself fortunate that I got to see Wayne Gretzky play in person several times.

I also got to sit right next to the Coyote bench during his first year as coach there, which was almost cooler - there was WAYNE EFFING GRETZKY, about three feet from me.

I read an entertaining piece once about that.
It was written at the time of Michael Jordan's first retirement, discussion whether he warranted being included in the list of the very best atheletes of all time, and it was written in the style of thse existing members of the club discussing with MJ whether he was worthy.

At one point, Jordan turns to the little guy (Gretzky) and asks why HE deserves to be there if Jordan doesn't.

GRETZKY: Because I hold the records.
JORDAN: Which records?
GRETZKY: All of them.

There's a list of those records at http://www.nhl.com/history/gretzky.html.  It includes such amusing records as Most Assists in One Game by a Rookie...

Seven.

by Llewdor on Nov 7, 2007 11:38 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

That's awesome
I wasn't aware that the NHL put this page together - flipping through some of those records is pretty amazing...

The best part is the listing of who's next
Not necessarily second, but next.  For example:

Most Points in a Single Season: 215
Next (fifth): Mario Lemieux

Gretzky doesn't just hold the record; he holds spots 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Good call.
It's a shame really. I love going to Vegas, but being constantly bombarded with images of people like Celine Dion, Rita Rudner and other losers takes some of the fun out of it.

Last time I stayed at the Luxor
I had to deal with a 40-foot tall billboard of Carrot Top.  Which may actually be worse than Celine Dion.

There was not only the massive billboard
but his pic was in ALL the elevators, and also on my room key.  I'm fairly sure he was also delivering room service and valet parking.  Or maybe it just seemed that way.

If it wasn't for the vast quantities of alcohol that were consumed that weekend, I would have been really annoyed at all the Carrot Topness.

Just a tip
never ride the NYNY roller coaster at 11AM when you're hung over after 15+ hours of drinking.

Didn't actually puke, but I didn't feel right the rest of the day.  Until the booze started flowing again, that is.

Hey, MarinerInTheDistrict
I actually just moved out to the DC area.  Any recommendations for bars to watch M's games?

by ningwers on Nov 7, 2007 3:57 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I lived in DC
while I was at school, so for most of the time I couldn't go to bars. Then by the time I could, I had saved enough money through something the NCAA might frown on to buy a nice tv and the Extra Innings package, so I didn't go to the bars to watch the games. I never found a bar that was a Mariners bar, but depending on where you live, I could give you some tips for sports bars. What area do you live in?

I live up in Rockville
But I work down at the World Bank, so anything on the Red Line would be great.

by ningwers on Nov 8, 2007 7:39 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Hey
So I asked some buddies back in DC and they said the place we went (when we did go to a bar) has closed. It was a good place called Willie and Reeds. I will ask around some more and figure out some new places. As for now, I would say ESPN zone is a good place. They have a bar area so you can go with a co-worker or friend and chill, you don't have to get a meal. Plus they got a ton of TVs. The only bad thing is the food is expensive.

Meh
Over-exageration of all the things I find unattractive in a woman, more or less.

And weirdly, I'm half Chinese and yet not attracted to Asians at all.

by Graham on Nov 7, 2007 4:39 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

No cause for me
I don't hold any of those stupid stereotypes.  I just think they're hot.  People like Redheads, and I think they're awful looking.  Blonds... meh.  Depends. I don't think Pamela Anderson is ugly.

I seem to gravitate towards brunettes myself,
but that doesn't mean I don't find other women attractive. It's a package deal more than any one asset if you ask me.

by Thingray on Nov 7, 2007 4:43 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed
But I think that's true for most people.  It's like preferences.  I enjoy looking at Asian women more because I find them, on average, more attractive. Doesn't mean that an unattractive woman is attractive or that I'll pass over a hot caucasian woman or anything.

I do know one guy who will only date blondes,
and they have to be between 21 - 31 years old.

Of course he's almost 50, out of shape, and not very well off, so he's very lonely.
