M's news today: 3B Coach finalized & Japanese Pitcher Info

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/sports/2003996840_webmari06.html

Perlozzo named M's third base coach

Pretty much rounds out the coaching staff, since Bowa pwned McClaren and went to LA instead.

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/mariners/2003995974_mari06.html

Could be some good news here. M's likely to pursue Japanese hurler with Seattle ties.

If the M's can pick up Kuroda as a #3 starter, they would only have to worry about trading for one.. or picking up one. Carlos Silva anyone?

He's coming around
The throw to the plate is... NOT IN TIME! MARINERS WIN IT! MARINERS WIN IT!

Gotta love Perlozzo pulling a hammy on that play
THE THROW TO THE PLATE WILL BE... LATE! THE MARINERS ARE GOING TO PLAY FOR THE AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP!  I DON'T BELIEVE IT!  MY OH MY!

That should be
"I don't believe it! It just continues! My Oh My!" if memory serves :-P

Gotta be a good thing
that his agent is already figuring how Kuroda will look in our rotation.

His age is creeping up there, but no reason not to get him for a few years anyway.

Someone get Richie on a REAL offseason workout plan...NOW!!...*signed: M's fan network.

Schilling also is going to resign with the Red Sox
Pettite doesn't know if he wants to pitch again, and declined his option.

And Cleveland is keeping Byrd and Borowski. Maddux is also sticking with our "rivals."

Remember Moyer vs. Maddux?
I'll always have the memories. :(
Willie is ours, and you can't have him

meh on Kuroda
Considering that he has decent control but does not miss many bats, he sounds kind of like the right-handed version of Jarrod Washburn.

Thank you
I agree. I don't see Kuroda projecting as anything better than a #4.

Kei Igawa, anyone?
I remember when people were saying Igawa would become a #2 or 3 when he made it here. Kuroda will probably be an improvement over what we have, but there's no way he'll make a huge impact. I think all of the imports from the orient this year have a bigger amount of bust potential than many in years past.

Different type of pitcher.
Kuroda has good command and control, but doesn't strike out many hitters.

Igawa strikes out more hitters, but he walks more hitters.

Kuroda has pitched his entire career in a hitter's park.

Why do some
think Kuroda is going to be a 3?

On our staff - maybe.  But that's not saying anything.

by tait644 on Nov 6, 2007 12:59 PM PST reply actions

Don't forget we still need 2 solid starters...
If Kuroda can be the next Miguel Batista, perfect. The guys a 'workhorse' with good/great control. Stash him in the back end or #3. Don't cast a guy off just because he may only be 'solid' rather than great. We can win a lot of games with a decent back-end to the rotation. We still need that power-duo pitcher to complement Felix if the M's want a WS title, but the difference between 88 and 100 wins is in the back end. No question. With todays playoff situation, its pretty clear that having more than 1 dominant pitcher is a necessity.

Kuroda will make our rotation better (in theory) and there aren't many alternatives out there, so lets just sign him and keep our eyes open for the other ace of the staff.

The m's win by simply removing weaver and horam; adding one of Japan's top 5 pitchers would be  another victory.

Good control without missing bats
is the recipe for the next Washburn, not Batista.  The problem is tying up the payroll for the next 3-4 years by paying No. 2 starter money for another No. 4 or 5 starter performance.

The M's get the benefit of pitching not-Ramirez and not-Weaver by replacing them with a replacement level pitcher.

Other than his agent, who said Kuroda is one of the best pitchers in Japan?

So it's official
Felix is the hardest throwing starter in baseball:

http://baseballanalysts.com/archives/2007/11/the_bill_james_2.php

Felix Hernandez (95.6) had the fastest heater in the majors last year among pitchers with 162 or more innings.

All despite losing a couple mph off his fastball early in the year.

and Burnett is second?
That seems odd. I would have thought that Verlander would take first. I guess maybe sometimes he throws his fastball at slower speeds, which brings down his average.

wow
"I guess maybe sometimes he throws his fastball at slower speeds, which brings down his average."

Did you do the math yourself?  HAHA, chain pulling can be fun.

I watched Verlander quite a bit
he's one of those guys who changes the speed on his fastball a lot.  He lived quite a bit in the low-mid 90's this year, dialing up to the high 90's as needed.  From what I can tell, he was able to keep his fastball low and hit the corners more, at least than what I saw last year.

If we sign Kuroda, we don't need another FA
It would be nice if there was a good deal out there, but more than likely there won't be a #2 starter available for a reasonable deal on the FA market. We could do a trade, but I would be fine with just giving RRS or Baek the job out of spring training. They would both be better than Horam, and they would be almost free.

by vkut79 on Nov 6, 2007 2:47 PM PST reply actions

I do agree that we'd be better
by just signing him alone. But still not ultra-competitive in the pitching realm, which would hurt us in the playoffs should we ever get there again.

Next year's playoff rotation
if we get there and get Kuroda:
  1. Felix
  2. Batista
  3. Kuroda
4th option if needed: Washburn.

That doesn't look too hot does it?

I think signing him will at least give us a guy who can hopefully go 7 innings most of the time.
