Should Jose Guillen be offered arbitration?

The Ms have until 9 p.m. on Saturday to decide whether to offer him salary arbitration.  With the release of the Mitchell report potentially naming names, I guess there is a chance he may choose to accept if offered.  I think they should offer arbitration, even with the chance he accepts but I am afraid that may send Adam Jones back to the bench.

Tough call.
I'd love to so we can get draft picks when/if he signs somewhere else, but it really scares me that he might accept.

right
I'd love to have the guy sign for one more year. Its the years after I don't want.

by Bearskin Rugburn on Nov 30, 2007 1:57 PM PST up reply actions

It scares me because I think
if Guillen was back for next year that Adam Jones would rot on the bench again.

If we could put AJ in LF and keep Guillen, I'm all for it. But unless we dump Sexson it would never happen.

by Thingray on Nov 30, 2007 2:04 PM PST up reply actions

Not going to happen
The team is committed to starting Adam Jones.  If Guillen returns, it forces Ibañez out of LF. Most likely it means that Sexson gets traded.

Guillen accepting arb is almost the best possible scenario.  The Mariners get the best lineup out of the deal, without making a long-range commitment to an OF on the wrong side of 30.

by Steve Nelson on Nov 30, 2007 2:24 PM PST up reply actions

But you're counting on the M's
management to recognize this "best case scenario", and actually do what makes sense.

That will happen about the same time that corco quits drinking.

It's not the drinking, so much
it's the handling of the liquor.

most of the good beers you guys drink are between 5 and 5.8%

by Thingray on Nov 30, 2007 3:40 PM PST up reply actions

It is a financial issue
I drink for the pleasure of being drunk.

I drink because that is the only way to play beer pong.

I drink because of this sense of community and bonding that forms between a bunch of drunk people.

I drink because it is so much easier to hit on beautiful women when drunk.

Drinking as about being with people. It's a bond and a great thing. That's why I don't ever drink alone.

And the most inexpensive way to do all that is by drinking Icehouse.

by Corco on Nov 30, 2007 3:44 PM PST up reply actions

I'll give you that.

How do you think bars get really good beer?
It's not like there's some dude pouring bottles into the tap lines back there, you know.

Most towns have a beer store (this is Portland's best) that can get kegs of pretty much anything you want.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Nov 30, 2007 3:49 PM PST up reply actions

My preference
For you Seattle area folks is either to stop by Rock Bottom (there's one in Bellevue and one in downtown Seattle) for a keg of one of their handcrafted brews -- plan 48 hours ahead though -- or to hit up the Mac & Jack's brewery in Redmond. Rock Bottom's a little cheaper with more variety, but when you want an african amber nothing's better than M&J :)
We want the funk! Give up the funk!

I'm jealous.

If I actually manage
to drink 36 cans of Icehouse in a single night, that will actually be tomorrow.
(so no, I'm not actually going to drink 36 cans of Icehouse. According to the internet I'd be legally drunk for like a week if I somehow survived that)

I don't think we should be worried about sending
AJ to the bench. He'll either be a starter or be traded -- Bavasi has acknowledged his major league readiness.

Yes
He's better than the other free agent corner outfielders who might sign for only one year.  More talent at a reasonable price is usually a good idea.

It also increases the incentive to dump Sexson.

by G_ on Nov 30, 2007 1:55 PM PST reply actions

yes, yes, yes
if he accepts then we'll sign him. Nothing wrong with that, really - he's a good hitter. The only good reason not to sign him was he was asking for 3/30. He won't get that through arby.

by Bearskin Rugburn on Nov 30, 2007 1:56 PM PST reply actions

We should def offer salarb
for the draft picks possibility. If he accepts, then ideally we should try to move one of Vidro and Sexson, either in a trade to another team or to a non-starting role, and then put Ibanez at the opening that results, giving us an outfield of Jones-Ichiro-Guillen. Removing Vidro or Sexson is not easy, but its what needs to be done in that case.

by vkut79 on Nov 30, 2007 1:58 PM PST reply actions

Sanctions?
Isn't it a risk given the fact that his name is linked to shipments of HGH and with the Mitchell report coming out too?  It appears he could face some type of discipline from the league.

by Man From Nantucket on Nov 30, 2007 2:03 PM PST reply actions

I asked this in another thread
Who has the better plate discipline?

Adam Jones or Wladimir Balentien.

Trying to settle an argument, and I said Jones, and its not close. Agree/Disagree?

On the topic, though...yeah, of course you offer him. At worse, he plugs in LF for Ibanez. Dbout it will come to that...I expect a nice draft pick for us. (I wonder if Boston gets a draft pick for us losing Guillen, since they seem to get 50 every year).

by Slica on Nov 30, 2007 2:09 PM PST reply actions

YES OF COURSE YOU DO
He is a good hitter and if he doesn't take arb then its no big loss.  What do you lose by offering arb.  Hopefully he's smart enough now to use stuff that is undetectable so proof never comes forth.

by Edgar for Pres on Nov 30, 2007 3:01 PM PST reply actions

YES!
Best case: he accepts, we get another year of below-market Guillen, and we move Raul to first while moving Sexson (or platooning him with Vidro, or something).

Worst case, he refuses, signs elsewhere, and we get a compensation pick.

There's no downside.

by Llewdor on Nov 30, 2007 3:05 PM PST reply actions

Wait, I thought you were talking about
Sexson. I think there are limitations as far as trading Guillen if it's an arbitration case, isn't there?
I overvalue prospects

by Thingray on Nov 30, 2007 3:12 PM PST up reply actions

I don't think so.
Guillen would get the standard contract at the arbitration rate.  Since he's not signing as a free agent, the June 15 restriction doesn't apply.

We can trade Guillen.

by Llewdor on Nov 30, 2007 3:24 PM PST up reply actions

Bavasi says he's committed to AJ.
So AJ plays regardless of whether we move Sexson.  Getting Raul out of LF is the win, here.  What happens to Sexson is beside the point.

by Llewdor on Nov 30, 2007 3:23 PM PST up reply actions

Definitely
Keeping Guillen for another year = good

More draft picks for Fontaine = good

You can't lose.

by Katal LM on Nov 30, 2007 3:15 PM PST reply actions

Ergo...
...they won't off arbitration.

Simple!
