Santana???

* We started hearing rumblings this week that there was a team in on Santana that no one has mentioned. Once we began asking around, officials from two clubs we surveyed nominated Seattle. But don't bet your Space Needle souvenir collection on it. The Twins would almost certainly start the conversation by asking for Adam Jones and Brandon Morrow. And there is practically no scenario under which Seattle could give up Jones, now that Jose Guillen is gone.

The Mariners also would have trouble coming up with a third and/or fourth piece, since their most high-profile prospect, catcher Jeff Clement, wouldn't fit Minnesota's needs. And one more thing: Seattle probably wouldn't be a place Santana would be anxious to waive his no-trade clause to go to, either. So never mind.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&id=3132761&lpos=spotlight &lid=tab1pos1

I know Stark says its a long shot, but doesn't the "team no one knows about" part imply that the deal doesn't make sense on some level, otherwise everyone would be talking about it? And if that's the case wouldn't there only be grumblings if there might be some part no one knows about (hey maybe the Twins are really high on Jose Lopez and will give up Santana for Morrow, Jones and Lopez!)(j/k)

I'm probably just trying to fool myself into thinking that Johan Santana could actually be a Mariner next year, but hey, that would be pretty cool

I really enjoyed Jon Heyman's take
The Mariners have the need and the cash. But does Santana want to go from relative obscurity in Minneapolis to complete obscurity in Seattle?

Hey Jon? Fuck you man.

No kidding...
Seattle >>>>>> Minneapolis in terms of obscurity.

about culture and things like that.  They want to live where it's warm and where they can get on national TV regularly.

Landing Santana
would be one of those absolutely huge, franchise-defining moments that I think I actually want to avoid.

It's not so much the Johan that I don't want as it is the incredible cost.

by Jeff Sullivan on Nov 29, 2007 2:57 PM PST reply actions

And the chance of him going
Mike Hampton on our asses. Or Kevin Brown.

by redwolf75 on Nov 29, 2007 2:58 PM PST up reply actions

I dunno...
I'm mixed about giving up the farm AND the funds, but Santana isn't Barry Zito/Mike Hampton/Kevin Brown.  He's more Roger Clemens/Pedro Martinez/Randy Johnson.

The cost would be significant, sure, but he's certainly one guy that might actually be worth it -- if you can assign that quality to a starting pitcher.

I'm on the fence.
I'm worried about his slight build, but Pedro's a midget and he held up pretty well through age 33, so it's not a death knell.

$25m a year for one pitcher really doesn't strike my fancy, though. Not without a payroll increase.

by Jeff Sullivan on Nov 29, 2007 3:03 PM PST up reply actions

You better believe
that if the M's have to increase the payroll to land a TOR pitcher, they're going to do it.

I mean, hell, did you honestly think that prior to 2004 Howard Lincoln would pony up enough dough to land Adrian Beltre???  Especially after spending so much to get Sexson???

Logically, yeah
The Twins are almost certainly coming out ahead on any deal for Johan, and the financial cost burden is going to be immensely risky.

But holy shit I would be so giddy if Johan was coming here. (As long as Felix stays).

This would be one of those times that I would just cover my ears, go blah blah blah and just be happy for awhile.

by Matthew on Nov 29, 2007 3:13 PM PST up reply actions

Somewhere on Churchill's blog
Somebody relayed some other insider post from somewhere else that said that Santana only wants to play for one team (and it's not Boston), will only go there with the assurance of a 6/$150+m extension, will use his no-trade clause to nix any deal unless he gets exactly what he wants from said team and that a deal has to get done now or it's not getting done.

Grain of salt and all but I wouldn't be surprised if the Twins did nothing and just let him walk.

by Gomez on Nov 29, 2007 3:22 PM PST reply actions

I would
When you have the opportunity to replace him with 3 people who may make your team great for cheap, you try as hard as you can to get that done.

by seattlebruin on Nov 29, 2007 3:47 PM PST up reply actions

ESPN saying
The Red Sox and Twins are discussing the framework of a Johan Santana deal that would have Boston sending four players to Minnesota in return for the two-time Cy Young Award winner, including center fielder Coco Crisp, pitcher Jon Lester and minor-league shortstop Jed Lowrie, the trio that would anchor the deal.

---

We could beat that, I think.

Not, you know, that we will.

by Garces on Nov 29, 2007 5:27 PM PST reply actions

Whattt
They would give away a back-of-the-rotation starter, an OF with poor offense, some SS prospect, and one more prospect for a future HOF? No way... Jones, Morrow, Clement is much better than that (but we shouldn't do it). If Boston pulls this off... they will be winning their division every year for a while.

by vkut79 on Nov 29, 2007 9:56 PM PST up reply actions

This probably isn't the final package
I'd guess Boston's just starting the bidding low. There's no way Minnesota pulls the trigger for this package... they just want NY and Boston (and whoever else) in a bidding war.

Hmm.... Jones/Morrow/Chen/other pitcher?

by Nick S on Nov 29, 2007 11:51 PM PST up reply actions

Boston won't deal Ellsbury
which pretty much means Boston will not win this bidding war.

in an ESPN that contains Skip Bayless, Stephen A. Smith, and Stuart Scott, Gammons is at least halfway decent.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

I like Gammons too.  Just... any Boston news from ESPN has to be taken with granules of salt, even given his connections.

by Gomez on Nov 30, 2007 10:23 AM PST up reply actions

I'm a fan of Gammons too.
However, the quality of his work has gone down pretty significantly over the past few years.  I'm sure his near-death experience and age are pretty huge factors.  The weekly full-page articles that he used to write for the Boston Globe were fantastic - some of the best sports writing I've ever seen.

by Jed MC on Nov 30, 2007 10:42 AM PST up reply actions

So I wonder if a deal could be possible
something like Jones, Morrow (who Bavasi didn't mention were untouchable, according to Baker) and Fear or Mangini for Santana. Granted that's a heck of a lot, but it might be worth it.

Well,

Seriously, of all the lame-ass Seattle cliches we have to put up with, how does Stark come up with something that terrible? How about:

"But don't bet your rain-soaked Starbucks flannel on it."

or:

"But don't bet your Nirvana 'Bleach' album that you always listen to while walking to work at Boeing while wearing Birkenstocks on it."

Now watch...
Just like last year when there was some buzzings about the M's trading for Manny Ramirez and ending up with Horacio Ramirez, they'll end up trading Clement for someone like Mayo Santana...
