MDT (Most Despicable Team)

Over at Athletics Nation, Blez posted his lineup for Most Despicable Team. Of interest is his inclusion of Beltre at 3B. I think the term "despicable" is a little out of place, but I'm pretty sure all of us have certain players on other teams (or even our own) who we irrationally or even rationally despise. Seems like an interesting topic atleast and nothing to take particularly seriously.

Mine:
C - Paul LoDuca
1b - Kevin Millar
2b - Brian Roberts
3b - Scott Brosius
SS - Michael Young
LF - Garret Anderson
CF - Johnny Damon
RF - Jermaine Dye

SP - Cupcakes
SP - Curt Schilling
SP - Jared Weaver/John Lackey
Cl - K Rod
RP - Ramiro Mendoza

Def. not exhaustive and some are more hated than others (despise Damon), but I'm comfortable that this is a good start.

Anyone else care to share?

On my MDT
Jeter and Michael Young both play SS in the hopes that they add up to a decent one.

I have always hated Chipper Jones as well and I am not sure why. Actually, most of the 90's Braves.

Most Despised
These two have to be included on any team I'd put together:

Jose Mesa
Rafael Palmeiro -- so THAT'S why he always killed the Mariners

Jeff Kent
is somebody I've long despised. Part of it is the whole washing-his-truck thing. Also, doing some quick research, I found this hilarious quote from Lance Berkman: "Jeff Kent is not a racist. He hates white people, black people, and Latinos equally."

Player A must be on the bench of the MDT.

My List
C  Mike Piazza (I like my C to play defense, and then there was the whole petty fight with Clemens, so both got on my list)
1B John Olerud (I hear he sucks... maybe Giambi instead, or McGwire)
2B Jeff Kent (first his problems in San Fran, which I chalked up to Barry, now he can't play nice in LA and it just seems like he's a jerk)
3B Eric Chavez (Oakland A, can't even stay healthy for me to really enjoy hating him, that really pisses me off)
SS Derek Jeter (overrated sack of crap, I hate him more than anyone else in baseball, besides Steinbrenner)
LF Manny Ramirez (don't like "Manny being Manny")
CF Carl Everett (the whole Moyer, Everett thing, and there were other things that make me hate him)
RF Sammy Sosa (annoying roider who won't retire, plays for the Rangers, and just comes off as annoying, even when he was good)
DH Jose Vidro (grrrrrrrrrr)
Honarable Mention: Milton Bradley, Albert Belle, Elijah Dukes (I'll take troubled talent for $500 Alex, why can't these guys just play and leave their crap on the field)

SP Roger Clemens (a Yankee, just full of himself
SP Pedro Martinez (I admire him for the way he pitches, but never really liked the guy)
SP Brett Myers (wife beating bastard)
SP Scott Olsen (troubled young kids piss me off)
SP Mark Prior (he was also on my favorite players list, it pisses me off I can't watch him have a good career, I was really looking forward to it.)
MR Julio Mateo (see note on Myers)
CL Mariano Rivera (the wall of the Yankees, seeing him succeed in the postseason is good for Yankees, bad for me; seeing him fail in the postseason is bad for the yankees, makes me happy)
CL K-Rod (screw the Angels)

For me
Schilling has never met a microphone he didn't like. I don't care for his politics, but it isnt even that. He'll just spout off about anything. I think BP a few years back said he had a problem with diaharia of the mouth. Those senate hearings kind of sealed the deal a few years back when he acted all surprised to be called, when both he and the senate committee knew full well that he couldn't turn down an opportunity to take the pulpit. I find his blog pretty interesting at times, which proves to soften my dislike a bit, but he still makes my team.

Damon is pretty much the player that got me thinking about my list to begin with. For years I've joked around with my friends about players we have irrational hatred for. Damon was mine. I'm sure it goes back to something from his Oakland days, but I still can't stand him to this day. His noodle arm makes me laugh though

I find it odd that Schilling
gets so much hate for his politicis, but it was Mike Piazza who publicly stated he thought global warming was bunk, and denying global warming is pretty mich a one-way ticket to hatred these days (I know - I do it a lot).

by Llewdor on Nov 19, 2007 4:58 PM PST up reply actions

I didn't hear that
but it depends on why he denied it.

Hope this doesn't become political quickly.

You're shocked too?
My world has been thrown upside down. It's almost like the general homeostasis of the information I thought I knew has been affected by outside forces, causing it to shift and alter itself beyond my control, resulting in dangerous changes in my personal environment like those of dramatic weather shifts.

Almost like that.

They're not, actually
The first is an accurate description of events, the 2nd is a tremendous simplification of a process that is much more complicated.  But they're both referring to the same phenomenon.

Whatever you call it
it is not a political issue.  Like the guy or not, agree with him or not, Al Gore got that right - the earth is, in fact, warming, to the detriment of both Republicans and Democrats, Americans and non-Americans, and we have it within our capacity to do something about it.

Dammit
I hate Karl Rove and what he's done to the Mariners.  F*ck him and his love for grit.  Also, I'm worried about the safety of Lopez's career as a Mariner. I'm afraid Yuni may turn on him, much like Dick Cheney turned on his best friend when he shot him in the face.

Slightly disagree
and this may just be semantics, but the issue itself - the warming of the planet by man-made, preventable means - is not political.  It's the proposed/potential solutions that are political, and shouldn't be.  I'm not sure why the survival of our species should be politicized.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Nov 20, 2007 10:34 AM PST up reply actions

Oh, believe me, I know
I just wish that, in this one case, we as a country could get past that and focus on a bigger picture.  This is the country that conceived, designed, and built an atomic bomb in less than five years - there's absolutely no reason that people (scientists, politicians, whoever) can't get together to devise a way to save the entire freaking planet, except for politics.  And that pisses me off.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Nov 20, 2007 10:42 AM PST up reply actions

reason:
people overestimate the risks faced by events near to them and underestimate the risks faced by events far from them.

Here's my thing: I'm not one to believe 100% in the doomsayers' predictions about climate change. I'm fairly certain figuring out the global temperature is one of the most complex things ever and that at least one person is screwing something up in the calculations.

But does that even matter? We all agree that pollution sucks. Why can't we just rally around reducing pollution? It's the same damn thing but with no controversy.

Lets go green, not because of some imminent climate change that will kill us all, but because it's the smart thing to do. It makes sense. It's the better idea.

by Matthew on Nov 20, 2007 11:08 AM PST up reply actions

Well put
and you're absolutely right - pollution is the main issue, and if we can reduce that significantly, then global warming/climate change/whatever won't be an issue any more.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Nov 20, 2007 11:10 AM PST up reply actions

Nobody likes it
but the only way to really reduce pollution is to reduce your standard of living.  Sure solar and wind power are nice but when it comes down to it is that you are gonna need to cut back dramatically to make a dent.

I'm working on photovoltaics but I'm also very cynical that they will be the "solution".  Gas is freaking cheap just like coal and those type of resources aren't running out anytime soon.  I hope something gets done but I don't see any way in the next 50 years that much changes dramatically.

The best/easiest solution is to reduce the world population.

Wasn't it sean henn
that threw behind Yuniesky in that game in NY last year?  The one where Josh Phelps took out Kenji?

Y'know?

Dennis Lamp was something of a scrub who just always  did well against the M's.  It made more sense than the Mike Gallego thing, though I always sort of liked Gallego (he and Lance Blankenship were staples of the Tacoma Tigers in the 80s), and I have no reason to forgive Lamp.
