LL/FG Football - Recap

So, we had 6 players show up today:
Me - Team 1
Bretticus - Team 1
johnbai - Team 1
Matthew - Team 2
Katal - Team 2
Connor (screen name?) - Team 2

Final Score:  Team 1 56 - Team 2 49 (play to 56)
Anyways, here are some highlights:

  1. Since we only had 6 players, we had to improvise and play 3X3, but it actually turned out much better than I expected!  While Team 1 went with a 3-man QB rotation and variety of roles, Team 2 used Connor as their QB and Matthew/Katal as WRs.
  2. As johnbai said, if there ever was a MVP on a losing team, it would be Matthew.  The dude was FAST, and caught 7 TDs with various deep routes and slants - blowing by Brett and I on too many occasions until we switched to a zone-3 defense late in the game with the game on the line.  We played john shallow (bummed ankel), Brett intermediate, and me deep.
  3. John was one hell of a QB, throwing 4 TDs to me (including the game winner).  I threw for 1, and Brett threw for 1.
  4. With the score 49-42, Team 2 leading and on the game winning drive, we used the zone-3 defense and I was able to get an INT around mid-field to prevent Team 2 for winning.  Finishing with 2 INTs for my team.
  5. I scored on a QB draw with some nice blocking by john and Brett to finish with 2 rushing TDs.
  6. GW TD was a played in which we have had a lot of success with - shot gun snap to john, me running a flag route to the left sideline for the deep ball.
  7. Early in the game, I did my best "Reggie Bush at USC against Fresno State - run at full speed with the ball, stop near the sideline and change direction up the the field with a juke, fooling the defender - play."  Didn't score on that play, but it was a really fun juke. Since I don't know how to embed videos, here's the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwS5x920i8A
  8. The crazy laterals that john, Brett, and I used...
  9. The fucking tree over our head that knocked down a few passes - the most valuable defender of the game!
Anyways, that's about it from my recollection...

Oh, and we went to Red Mill, which had burgers to die for.  And a few of us also hobbled down to Blue Star for the SD-IND game and get some brewskis.

Serious, you guys should all try to come next time!

Good times!  And for those of you that came - what were some of your favorite plays and moments?  Katal, I'm looking forward to those pics!  Thanks!

I'll come if I'm in the country next time
Sounds like a blast, even if I don't really know how to play football.

I second this sentiment...
what about LL Handball???
district = denmark

by MarinerintheDistrict on Nov 12, 2007 6:20 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

as an aside, are there any actual
rec league or above soccer players hanging around here?

by Matthew on Nov 12, 2007 1:33 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Yes, but...
...I haven't played in Seattle since 2000 and the only Seattle leagues I know teams in now are over-40 leagues where my friends play.

I sorta qualify
I played rec and HS soccer through spring. Could've played in college but I really didn't feel like going to a little school in Montana.

HS soccer...good times
Indoor is amazing too

I was a good soccer player when
I was much younger, but I haven't played in 15 years.

For me it's the conditioning,
and the two bad ankles that slow me down now.

by Thingray on Nov 12, 2007 2:01 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

I only have one bad ankle
but I find that I'm terrified to run (cut, more specifically) on it, which tends to impact the soccer-playing.  So I sit in the pub and drink instead, which messes with the conditioning.  It's a vicious cycle, really.

by pdb on Nov 12, 2007 2:25 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

I have one really bad ankle
(I should wear a brace for pretty much any physical activity), and one that is just prone to sprains. I'm not scared of them as much as I've just lost some agility when trying to make certain cuts. I still play sports, but not at the speed I used to.

But the pub definitely hasn't helped with the conditioning.

I don't get how people can hurt their ankles
I can walk on them and be fine, have never had a twisted ankle or sprain in my life. It's my knees that gets screwed by soccer.

by Graham on Nov 12, 2007 4:20 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

I got kicked
on the inside of my left foot from behind while (whilst) going for a ball, pushing my leg out, and my studs grabbed the grass so my leg went left and my foot stayed put.  Add to that the guy who made the tackle landing on my foot in mid-rollover, and one broken ankle later, I haven't played since.

Eew.
That sounds unpleasant

by Graham on Nov 13, 2007 1:19 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

Mine right ankle was injured playing softball.
Hard slide into second, SS steps on my foot instead of the bag, body keeps going, foot stays behind. Tendons snap, etc...

My left ankle I've just sprained a few times playing basketball, hiking, etc.

it's stories like this
that make my very thankful that besides the expected bangups from sparring and occasional arm issues from over-pitching, I've never had any serious injury despite playing competitive sports non-stop for the past decade+

by Matthew on Nov 13, 2007 1:25 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Other than getting my nose broken (basketball),
breaking a thumb (basketball) and a finger (failed bunt attempt as a child), it's the only major injury I've ever had. I came back about 90% of what I was before, and probably could have been 100% but I didn't have insurance to pay for rehab, and I went back to work early against doctors advice (had to pay the rent man..).

But yeah, you've been pretty lucky. A friend of mine has had 4 surgeries in the past 3 years, and three of them were because of sports (softball and skiing).

I've been pretty lucky
The one injury I've had was a broken foot and a torn ligament on it that I got while running away from the cops.

by Robert on Nov 13, 2007 9:01 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

My knee went in my last proper soccer match
I was on the left touchline (because I'm a left back, that's what we do), trying to get past some striker and make a run up the wing. I decided to do a stepover-spin thing, because I'm tricksie like that. Just as I lock my right knee after the stepover, I get flying kicked by some 250 lb+ dude who was obviously attempting some sort of horribly late slide tackle.

Right in the goddamn knee.

SNAP.

Owwwwwwwww?

Tried to take the free kick, ball went maybe half a yard, crawled off the field in lots of pain. Turned out I have a partial tear of the PCL. Yaaaaay.

It was really fun
But I am soooo freaking sore. Holy shit, I'm out of shape. We didn't even play tackle and my whole body is sore - so sore, in fact, that I couldn't physically turn around to see where I was going this morning, when  I was trying to park, and I hit a wall and cracked my bumper. Pathetic...

My legs are sore, my hand is bruised, and
I have a blood blister on one of my toes. It was still an awesome time. Like Baker wrote, even with only six people, we made it work. We played for more than two hours, ate some fantastic burgers, and then a few of us headed to the bar to watch the Chargers upset Idianapolis.

Here are some pictures that my girlfriend took while watching the game. Ironically, there aren't any of our MVP Matthew with the ball, who was made his best Randy Moss impersonation everytime he made a reception.

I've never seen any of you in my life
So there's something weird about looking at photos of random people I don't recognize throwing a ball around.

I still don't understand the game, but I like the idea that it still translates well into a small-sided version.

Who's the dude with the gloves? Is that for grip or for warmth? Surprised wearing jeans doesn't impede...

Gloves
those are for receivers... a bit sticky, plus some padding for the hands.  He probably should have taken them off for playing QB.

The amazing thing is that NOONE brought cleats.  And a lucky thing, since the rest of us would have been laying of our butts the whole day if someone had.  The grass was pretty damp and slippery.

by johnbai on Nov 12, 2007 10:13 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

Glad you guys had fun
My neck actually WAS bothering me and still is today, and I can't turn my head to the left without pain, so it was for the best that I didn't try to play through.  Plus, you guys had a perfect 3x3 and I'd have created an odd-man situation, so it worked out.

Do it again, and barring catastrophe, I'll be there.

by Gomez on Nov 12, 2007 9:28 AM PST   0 recs

We did have fun 3x3
and it was easier to draw up plays that way.  But it would have been really fun to have 5x5 or 6x6.

If we could coordinate a day where we add Christian, Robert, Chas, maybe Phildopip and Jimmimoose... and few others (plus some people thought they could get a friend or two)... I think we could get it done.

by johnbai on Nov 12, 2007 10:15 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

Exactly.
How about the Saturday after Thanksgiving?

Who sets a wedding for the Sat after Thanksgiving?
That's....selfish.

People a lot of times have family in for the weekend for Thanksgiving and want to spend time with them, not go to some wedding.

My fiance will kill me if I don't go to this one...I already missed one last time we had LL softball, so I'm not getting out of this one.

by wwbaker3 on Nov 12, 2007 2:26 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

actually, it's a great time for a wedding
because most of the time, the family is already together. Saves planning hassle.

by Matthew on Nov 12, 2007 3:36 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Yeah
but if you're planning on family friends, which it sounds like they are, then you're screwing them over

<shrug>
no matter what, you're screwing somebody over when it comes to picking a wedding date.

by Matthew on Nov 12, 2007 4:10 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Yeah, I guess
It's just generally sort of an unspoken rule that you don't have a wedding on a holiday weekend

by I'm NOT Corco on Nov 12, 2007 4:15 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Also for those that have to fly in
airfare is significantly more expensive on holiday weekends

by I'm NOT Corco on Nov 12, 2007 4:17 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

That does make it tough.
I always thought you should schedule them away from the holidays, if for no other reason than anniverary gifts.

My GF has a December b-day, and if we got married on Thanksgiving weekend, I'd have to come up with three great gift ideas in less that one month. Two is hard enough thank you.

Advice for a best man
Don't do what Johnny Don't did.  Don't try to improvise a toast.  Take some time and write something good.  And practice it a time or two.  People will notice and it's amazing how much it adds to the quality of a wedding.

by johnbai on Nov 12, 2007 4:48 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

And try to do the toast early in the reception.
Later on you might end up to drunk, and that never makes for a good toast.
I overvalue prospects

by Thingray on Nov 12, 2007 4:54 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

You can work around that with cellphones,
laptops, TV's in a dressing room, etc. I've done that with weddings during Seahawks games before. Yeah you miss the game during the ceremony itself, but you just have to pray that it doesn't take forever.

in bonney lake. Large fields without tree obstuctions. 4 high quality softball fields. large spacious open fields with nice grass for football.

in all reality, we should look for a high school or jr high to play at
