Sports Illustrated Winter Preview: AL west

On the SI website they have what teams should do in the offseason.

That is the AL West. They think the Angels will go after Barry Bonds and A-Rod. I can see A-Rod....i can't see Bonds.

Do you guys agree with them what they think the M's should and will do?

Anyone notice that Doyle was listed as being ready

to play in Oakland. Too bad he was claimed by Tampa a little while ago.

Doyle was listed on both

The AL West piece was published on Oct 18, when Doyle was still an A.

The AL East piece was published on Oct 30, when Doyle was already a Ray.

The M's are at a crossroads, of whether to acquire more overvalued vets FOR the young guys (trade) or to hang on and see what the kids can do. I don't agree with the idea that we should throw '08 away and wait for '09. The m's will still need to acquire good SP'rs. We have some serious trade bait, but I don't really like the idea of giving up all of the young guys.

I am not sure Bavasi makes fair trades, so it's a little scary trusting him to get good worth in a trade scenario. Good FA signings will be hard to come by. It's best that I don't run the team, but I doubt it's 2nd best that Bill does.

Attempting to compete while rebuilding

was a bust in 2007. The M's were a streaky team of overachievers as a result. Yes, it was an exciting roller coaster ride but one ending on a long downward slope nonetheless. I agree with the analysis and think 2009 is the year to shoot for. It's time to finally give the kids the playing time they need. Hang on to Clement, AJ and Wlad for a real playoff run in '09 and who knows, they may be a huge surprise in '08. Sadly I also agree that this is not what Bavasi et al will do...

Cool write up

It doesn't mention the effect A-rod's decision will have on the Rangers. I would think it makes them a strong suitor for Bonds or any other high-priced FA. They should have a lot of extra cash to throw around.

Maybe enough to take on Sexson's contract, for the right salary dump of their own?
