McClaren looking at Charlton or Perlozzo and maybe BOONE or BOSIO

http://www.thenewstribune.com/sports/mariners/story/174484.html

Ew.
---
John McLaren's formal list of potential coaches includes some of the best and brightest minds in Seattle Mariners history - from former third-base coach Sam Perlozzo to ex-reliever Norm Charlton.
The list of former Mariners coaches and players who'd like to work for McLaren is even longer.

The latter includes Chris Bosio, a Seattle pitcher who spent a year as the pitching coach in Tampa Bay; Lee Elia, a long-time coach, manager and now scout; and a candidate who considers himself a "great coach" - former Mariners second baseman Bret Boone.

"I'm the best coach in my own mind, even though I've never coached in my life," Boone said, laughing. "John is a good friend, and we've talked baseball a lot. Last summer he told me, `You can't play golf every day for the rest of your life, when are you going to get back into baseball?'

"Has he asked me to coach - no. If he did, I'd consider it."

Two men whom it appears McLaren will ask, now that meetings with the Seattle front office in Arizona have concluded, are Charlton and Perlozzo.

This
has been brought up already?

by Slica on Oct 9, 2007 8:39 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No.
I mean it's time for 463563 old Mariner coaches and players to show up.

Jesus Tapdancing Christ, people, 1995 was THIRTEEN YEARS ago. Opening day 2001 will be as far away from Opening Day 1995 as it is from Opening Day 2008.

Apparently, though, Lincoln and company have figured it out- the way to keep the fans in the seats is:

  • spend money. Not spend money wisely, but spend it so you prove YOU CARE!
  • relentlessly promote people as Faces Of The Franchise- local kids like Willie, longtime Mariners like Raul.
  • shamelessly milk all the nostalgia for 1995 and 2001 that you can.
Follow these simple steps and you to can draw 2.6 million, while 2/3rds of MLB goes to the playoffs and you don't over a 6 year span!

I'm sorry...
... but the last few weeks is REALLY feeding my cynicism about this organization.

Seeing retread coaches isn't helping. I see Scrappy and an iceberg ahead.

I understand, my hopes aren't high either.
And then the Seahawks took a dump on Sunday, I'm getting my butt handed to me in my fantasy football leagues, and my team lost both softball games last night, so "sports-wise" I'm totally bummed.

Gotcha
And I agree with everything.

Its amazing that 1995 and 2001 haven't been watered down over this stuff. At least not for me, anyways.

You misspelled "everyday lineup".

Plus the guy on the far right looks like a great #2 starter.

Does it matter?
They'll all be gone in 2008 anyway.

I love how this statement is made every year
we just keep incrementing the year by one.

and I by love, I mean it's the partial cause of my drinking hobby.

well
The front office has preached to the media the negatives of too much turnover and need for stability for a franchise to be successful.

by eknpdx on Oct 9, 2007 9:43 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

well there's that
(we keep saying so and so will be gone next year and he never is)

but I was actually referring to the:
"who cares? [fill in the blank] will be gone by [current year+1]" template that's been applied to an ever-changing number of managers, coaches, mediocre flotsam, etc.

Funny how few people I actually dread leaving the org: Felix, Ichiro, Beltre, Jones, <strike>Lincecum</strike>, Engle and Fontaine is pretty much it.

I saw that after I posted
No delete button here.

I'd add Putz to that list.  And to avoid being called bandwagon jumper, I'm including Triunfel too.

"are pretty much it" not "is"
I cannot add Putz to the list for the same reason Jeff stated in his Yankee Stadium myth post. Part of me is always expecting JJ Putz to completely suck again. Rationally it would make me sad if he left, but it would never have the emotional stomach punch effect that those other people would.

The only reason I love this statement
Is that it supplies the false hope I need to justify my drinking habit.

And it's used so much it's as cool as getting a tattoo. I like to be on the cutting edge of cool.

by Trent on Oct 9, 2007 9:44 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not so much a fan of that term. Makes it sound like a dependency. I prefer to call myself a drinking enthusiast.

I did actually think about that for
the above subthread, but no, here I was thinking about his spiel on boating and wanting to just be called a guy who likes to boat instead of the generic term being a boating enthusiast.

It's pretty much the only time the word enthusiast is used.

MLB.com
says we're looking at MCLEMORE to be 1st base coach. That'd be neat, always thought he'd make a good coach

He'll be 1B coach, 3B coach, bench coach, hitting coach, Tacoma manager, simulated game manager, roving minor league instructor, and new team mascot after the M's change their names to the Shapeshifting McLemores.

Another not yet mentioned...
From the Seattle Times... Jim Colborn.

The assumption being that since Tracy was fired from the Pirates, they probably won't be bringing the rest of his staff back.

Colborn is interesting mainly because he brought in quite a few of our higher profile Pac Rim signings when he was a scout for us.  Aside from that, I didn't exactly see any solid returns from his time with the Pirates...

I love that Buhner quote...
Simply because the paragraph before it I was thinking "What about Bone? He should come coach this team." Doesn't the fact that he believes he isn't qualified for the job make him immediately a better candidate than 90% of the names in that article?

Charlton --> Bullpen coach.
Would be fine by me.  Not so much as the pitching coach, per se, though.
Imagine what the speed of lightning would be if it didn't zig-zag...

by PositivePaul on Oct 9, 2007 1:15 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I should be a little more specific...
Here's a crew I could endorse, although, really, it's no big deal because the pitching coach is probably the most important coach after the manager:

1B: Buhner.  Really. Tough. Job.  I believe, though, that the 1B coach helps with OF defense and Bone knows a thing or two about that.  Plus imagine the sh*t he'd flip the other teams' first basemen...

3B: No opinion.  Hell, bring back Perlazzo.  I don't care -- we'll probably hate him anyway, so I don't want someone I don't want to hate.

P: Mel Stottlemyre (or however the heck ya spell it).  Experienced.  Local.  Might be interested. Can't say anything negative about him.

Bullpen: Norm Norm Charlton.  Love the dude.  Seriously, I've had several conversations with him (he seems to be at every event as the "player from the past", and I always get a chance to chat w/him), and I like what he brings.  I don't like him being THE pitching coach, per se, because I think there are better, more qualified coaches, but he'd certainly bring a ton of experience to the 'pen.

Bench: Bill James.  I'm not kidding, though I know he's clearly not available and 100% counter to what the org would do.  The bench coach's role, though, is to be the manager's brain.  Let the manager be the 'leader' and manage the players, but let the bench coach manage the in-game <strike>strategery</strike> strategy.  Who'd be better???

Strength & conditioning: Boone.  'nuff said.

Imagine what the speed of lightning would be if it didn't zig-zag...

by PositivePaul on Oct 9, 2007 1:27 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

By your criteria
they should hire Boone for 3B coach.  I already hate him, so it wouldn't be a stretch to keep hating him....

This is so stupid...
This god damn organization refuses to let the good years die. Maybe these guys are all fantastic coaches. I really don't care though. Clearly the ownership believes that having names around that are familiar to the fans will drive ticket sales.

I'd burn the 1995 banner if I had the chance. Take away Safeco and it's probably the worst thing that's ever happened to the M's.

Get the fuck over it already.
