If we need a #2 starter, how about....
Curt Schilling? Yeah, he's a douchebag, but I think he takes much too much crap for that. The guy did just run a 3.87 ERA in Fenway park with a 101K/23BB ratio in 151 innings. I guess injury is the biggest thing you have to fear, but the guy can still pitch, and would be a legitimate #2 behind Felix. He was still touching 95 during some more high-leverage games this year too.
Plus, he's a smart pitcher who mixes his pitches, maybe Felix can learn a thing or two. I also seem to remember him mentioning that Felix would give Johan some competition for the Cy soon, so it'd be nice to see him work with Felix on mixing up his repetoire. He mentioned at one point that he wouldn't mind pitching for Tampa Bay which leads me to believe he's open to ideas other than Boston or Arizona. His peripherals are still good, with little sign of Decline, and Safeco would be able to mask his decline a little bit anyway. It's entirely possible that we can sign him to a 2 year, $20 million deal and have him be a steal for us.
Thoughts?

Jeff would commit suicide
Yeah, not a bad deal.
He would cost our first round pick

I guess what I'm saying is
But you've got what I'd consider comparable overall talent in both rounds.
1st Round picks kick ass and are not something to be giving away,I guess.
Interesting
Actually
Having a later pick in the draft isn't a horrifying scenario since a lot of players in recent years have been falling heavily due to signability concerns. The only reason the Yankees got such a great player in Ian Kennedy at pick #21 is because the other 20 teams before him either didn't think they could sign him at slot bonus (see USSM's information about slots) or already signed another guy that was going to go over slot (Tigers - Andrew Miller).
The Mariners are willing to go over slot, just not "that much". And when they do, they will conceal it like good little boys until August. But anyway, when you're down that far in the draft and you're forced to take the best talent available, I'd like to see if Fontaine goes nuts if they don't take the best talent and damn the slot bonus.
These last few years we've had higher picks, so if slot was a concern, we could just take another really talented guy (Morrow over Miller, for example), but with a 20 pick? We're probably going to just take the best person available and kick the slot rules to the curb.

Going over slot
The M's still want to play a series in Japan (even though they got passed over for 2008), and the only way that happens is if they stay in Selig's good graces.

You forgot to mention
Schilling
that brings up a potentially hilarious
He wouldn't work with Felix
It's all a matter of if he'd want to come here and his demands were reasonable. If both are true, I wouldn't mind him pitching every 5 days here.
He is good
Hmmm....
Yeah, Safeco's a good park for pitchers, but I just don't see him being attracted to the situation here.
But, yeah, that said, if he did show interest and it didn't cost us a draft pick (#20 isn't protected :-( -- so he'd have to not be offered arbitration, which, of course isn't very likely), I'd certainly look past his douchebaggery...
The local media should be pushing for this hard
Um...

not a number 2 per se
might come on another 1yr contract after another bad year (health wise).
Wolf!
That said, I've no idea about answering questions on his ability to stay healthy. Only notched more than 200 IP twice in nine seasons.
yeah, that's why I would only
Even if he only gives you 100-150IP, I'd rather have a good 100-150IP followed by replacement level 50-100IP than a mediocre 175IP.
This team has enough meh on it both in Seattle and Tacoma. We need talent, not durability.
I'd be fine with that.
What about Freddy Garcia?
I love these types of statements
part two: a blanket statement that the assertation is without merit.
It's like a built in oxymoron!
To clarify, Freddy did a lot more than smoke pot. He was also viewed by the front office as weak-willed (remember the earplugs?), an unwelcome influence on other players, and an underachiever.
He's essentially the last person you want having meaningful contact with Felix.
Richie Sexson?
if we sent him to winterball
how about the second guy from the left
Something about that picture
Something about that picture...
It sucks on a number of levels. I get that they were trying for a narrow DOF approach (i.e. shooting wide open to create a blur effect). Problem is, they missed. It's neither in focus on the players nor on the fire.
It's one of the worst pictures I've seen out of the media in awhile, actually...

Agent: Schilling relies more on outfield defense.
Agent: But that also means his flyball tendencies would be helped by SafeCo Field.
Bavasi: That's good!
Agent: His 2007 FIP was the highest it's been in a long time.
Bavasi: That's bad.
Agent: He is a proven playoff pitcher though. He just knows how to pitch.
Bavasi: That's good!
Agent: His strikeout rate has plummeted this past season.
Bavasi:
Agent:
Bavasi:
Agent: That's...bad.
Bavasi: Do we have a deal?
Agent: You'll barely regret this.
And beat up a small, retarded child.
So your telling me Schilling
