If we need a #2 starter, how about....

Curt Schilling?  Yeah, he's a douchebag, but I think he takes much too much crap for that.  The guy did just run a 3.87 ERA in Fenway park with a 101K/23BB ratio in 151 innings.  I guess injury is the biggest thing you have to fear, but the guy can still pitch, and would be a legitimate #2 behind Felix.  He was still touching 95 during some more high-leverage games this year too.

Plus, he's a smart pitcher who mixes his pitches, maybe Felix can learn a thing or two.  I also seem to remember him mentioning that Felix would give Johan some competition for the Cy soon, so it'd be nice to see him work with Felix on mixing up his repetoire.  He mentioned at one point that he wouldn't mind pitching for Tampa Bay which leads me to believe he's open to ideas other than Boston or Arizona.  His peripherals are still good, with little sign of Decline, and Safeco would be able to mask his decline a little bit anyway.  It's entirely possible that we can sign him to a 2 year, $20 million deal and have him be a steal for us.

Thoughts?

Yeah, not a bad deal.
We also wouldn't have to let go of any prospects, which would inevitably happen if we traded for AJ Burnett, Brad penny, or Johan.

He would cost our first round pick
He will be a Type A free agent, so Boston would get our first round pick (#20 overall).

by G_ on Oct 7, 2007 6:16 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

true.
But it's not like we're losing a number 5 pick or anything.

Yes, just
as valuable as chris bootcheck. Um, wait...

by redwolf75 on Oct 8, 2007 10:37 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess what I'm saying is
that if you look att he talent difference between a 5 pick and a 20 pick historically, it's not significantly better. The emphasis seems to turn more toward pitching in the lower pick, possibly due to pitcher attrition.

But you've got what I'd consider comparable overall talent in both rounds.

1st Round picks kick ass and are not something to be giving away,I guess.

by I'm NOT Corco on Oct 8, 2007 10:59 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Interesting
The 1st pick in the draft usually doesn't produce great SPs.  The most successful SP on that list is Andy Benes and he was basically reliable veteran rotation filler.

by Gomez on Oct 8, 2007 10:49 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually
I agree with Corco, but not for the same reasons.

Having a later pick in the draft isn't a horrifying scenario since a lot of players in recent years have been falling heavily due to signability concerns.  The only reason the Yankees got such a great player in Ian Kennedy at pick #21 is because the other 20 teams before him either didn't think they could sign him at slot bonus (see USSM's information about slots) or already signed another guy that was going to go over slot (Tigers - Andrew Miller).

The Mariners are willing to go over slot, just not "that much".  And when they do, they will conceal it like good little boys until August.  But anyway, when you're down that far in the draft and you're forced to take the best talent available, I'd like to see if Fontaine goes nuts if they don't take the best talent and damn the slot bonus.

These last few years we've had higher picks, so if slot was a concern, we could just take another really talented guy (Morrow over Miller, for example), but with a 20 pick?  We're probably going to just take the best person available and kick the slot rules to the curb.

I will not make jokes in my sig. I will not make jokes in my sig. I will not...

Going over slot
I could see the M's doing a Kennedy-like above slot deal ($2.2 million signing for a $1.5 million slot), but not one of the rock-the-boat, $4+ million major league deals that Miller, Drew, and Weaver received.

The M's still want to play a series in Japan (even though they got passed over for 2008), and the only way that happens is if they stay in Selig's good graces.

Schilling
is a douche, but he's not a grade-A AJ Pyrzinski (sp)douche. He's more of an A-Rod type douche, which we can live with.

He wouldn't work with Felix
He'd lecture Felix about being childish, not establishing his fastball and needing to follow the Lord etc.

It's all a matter of if he'd want to come here and his demands were reasonable.  If both are true, I wouldn't mind him pitching every 5 days here.

by Gomez on Oct 7, 2007 7:38 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

He is good
but one he is a douche, two the last thing we need is another ok 5 to 6 inning starter. We need someone that can go alittle bit longer. Our pen faded at the end, so we need some longer arms. To save our pen.

Hmmm....
I'm guessing that if Boston wins it all, he'll retire.  If not, he'll just return there.

Yeah, Safeco's a good park for pitchers, but I just don't see him being attracted to the situation here.

But, yeah, that said, if he did show interest and it didn't cost us a draft pick (#20 isn't protected :-( -- so he'd have to not be offered arbitration, which, of course isn't very likely), I'd certainly look past his douchebaggery...

Imagine what the speed of lightning would be if it didn't zig-zag...

The local media should be pushing for this hard
All of the "Will Curt teach Felix something about winning? / Why won't Felix let Curt teach him about winning? / Curt has taught Felix something about winning!" stories will practically write themselves. Or our sports writers could just steal the same articles about Curt and Josh Beckett from the Boston dailies.

by Katal LM on Oct 7, 2007 9:54 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Um...
Didn't Beckett already win a world series without Schilling's help?

how to beat the Yankees in the WS.

Duh!

by Matthew on Oct 7, 2007 10:48 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually
I think the reality is that Schilling and Beckett didn't exist until they played for the Red Sox. I've met more than one Red Sox fan who was completely unaware that Manny Ramirez once played for Cleveland.

not a number 2 per se
but Randy Wolf anyone?

might come on another 1yr contract after another bad year (health wise).

by Matthew on Oct 7, 2007 11:34 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Wolf!
I'd be more excited over Wolf than Schilling, and he certainly has age to his advantage over Schilling.

That said, I've no idea about answering questions on his ability to stay healthy. Only notched more than 200 IP twice in nine seasons.

by MarkE on Oct 8, 2007 1:07 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, that's why I would only
have interest if you can snag him on a similar deal he was on with LA. 1yr + team/vesting option.

Even if he only gives you 100-150IP, I'd rather have a good 100-150IP followed by replacement level 50-100IP than a mediocre 175IP.

This team has enough meh on it both in Seattle and Tacoma. We need talent, not durability.

I'd be fine with that.
Sometimes it's good to add a douchebag or two.  It helps the "chemistry" argument fade away.

What about Freddy Garcia?
Anyone in favor of bringing him back?  He might be cheap because of the injury/sucking.  It would also make Felix happy.  Freddy's a big reason why Felix is in Seattle.

by Patrick517 on Oct 8, 2007 7:32 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I love these types of statements
part one: a question about the reasoning behind an assertation, indicating unawareness.

part two: a blanket statement that the assertation is without merit.

It's like a built in oxymoron!

To clarify, Freddy did a lot more than smoke pot. He was also viewed by the front office as weak-willed (remember the earplugs?), an unwelcome influence on other players, and an underachiever.

He's essentially the last person you want having meaningful contact with Felix.

Something about that picture...
...makes me wish I'd've been there to take it.

It sucks on a number of levels.  I get that they were trying for a narrow DOF approach (i.e. shooting wide open to create a blur effect).  Problem is, they missed.  It's neither in focus on the players nor on the fire.

It's one of the worst pictures I've seen out of the media in awhile, actually...

Agent: Schilling relies more on outfield defense.
Bavasi: That's bad.

Agent: But that also means his flyball tendencies would be helped by SafeCo Field.

Bavasi: That's good!

Agent: His 2007 FIP was the highest it's been in a long time.

Agent: He is a proven playoff pitcher though. He just knows how to pitch.

Agent: His strikeout rate has plummeted this past season.
