Trade Idea.

Since proposing the M's acquire random crappy pitchers is the thing to do lately, here's my stab at it.

How's about Cliff Lee?

Star-divide

I have no reason to believe that the Indians are shipping him other than some poll I saw over at LGT.

He was really crappy in 2007, but he had a semi-decent year in 2006 and a legitimately good year in 2005.  The trend is downwards, but he's only 29 and should not be declining already.

His contract runs through 2009 with a club option at 8 million for 2010.  He's due $3.75M in '08 and $5.75M in '09.  That's pretty cheap.  The club option is $8M in '10.

So how about we offer some combination of Nick Green/Jorge Campillo/Rob Johnson/Jeremy Reed/Mike Morse for him?

Maybe he could benefit from a change in scenery.

Maybe Mel Stottlemyre could work his magic on him.

Maybe I'll get the flying car they promised me back in 1985.

It's ridiculous to speculate about a trade based on a poll over at LGT, but I'm bored.

Any takers?

The players
we'd be offering in that deal would surely be better than the no talent hacks you listed?

by Dan @ Lookout Landing on Oct 27, 2007 11:24 AM PDT reply actions

No
Lee's decline has been steady and across the board.  He's gotten worse at missing bats, at preventing walks, and he's turned into Gopheririts Man.  He's an extreme flyballer who gets himself into trouble and can't get himself out of it without a stellar defense behind him.

More then that, while he stranded just 62.5% of his baserunners this year, it's hard to say that he was just unlucky if his stuff is barely major league quality.

Lee might have been interesting once but his decline is almost certainly attributed to an undisclosed injury or a rapid decline.

Lee 2006 = Lee 2007
He just got burned by bad luck. It isn't a decline in stuff.

Yes.
But so is Washburn. Below average + Safeco = average.

by Jeff Sullivan on Oct 27, 2007 5:58 PM PDT up reply actions

The answer is still no
Below average can be found anywhere without having to trade someone to the Indians to get it.  Unless we want another repeat of Horacio Ramirez.

Hmmm...
They did sorta come out a fair bit ahead on the Asdrubal Cabrera trade, though, didn't they???

Im sorry
but I dont want the Mariners ever trading until we have new FO people.

Any trade scenerio with them strikes fear into me.

by Slica on Oct 27, 2007 3:57 PM PDT reply actions

I'd do it. Mark Shapiro wouldn't.
Nick Green/Jorge Campillo/Rob Johnson/Jeremy Reed/Mike Morse

I don't see a player on that list that would be an upgrade for Cleveland. They have no need for Johnson, as they already have Martinez, who's improving defensively and is an awesome hitter, and Shoppach, who from what I have read is pretty damn good behind the plate and could start for several other teams.

They're pretty well stocked with cheap, young, good relievers, so Campillo's not really that appealing.

Green's going to be 28, Reed's going to be 27 and Morse is going to be 26. These guys aren't prospects, so I just don't see anyone wanting them. At least not a team like Cleveland, which is full of young talent.

That said, I'd love to have Lee at that price. But with the FA pitching market as weak as it is, you know Lee could draw a better package of players.

by Teej on Oct 27, 2007 6:00 PM PDT reply actions

Almost definitley.
Do we have anything they'd want?

I wouldn't be willing to part w/ Yuni or Triunfiel
(sp?), but what would Cleveland be looking for?

Horacio Ramirez v 2.0

Definitely not Wlad.
The idea here is that the Indians have hypothetically given up on Lee.

We give them a couple of things we don't really want for something they don't really want.

by Patrick517 on Oct 28, 2007 7:36 AM PDT up reply actions

I think...
It would be difficult for us to trade things that we don't want (I'm talking about Morse/Campillo/Green/Reed/Johnson) for someone who has value, if only because he is a pitcher who once had moderate success, especially to a team like the Indians who have such a highly regarded front office.

Those 5 guys are more or less worthless to a major league team, why trade anything for them? Their chance of becoming good is so small that it is more of a risk to trade something for them than not to.

by MarinerintheDistrict on Oct 28, 2007 9:53 AM PDT up reply actions

We know that the guys are worthless.
Who's to say that Shapiro & Co. thinks the same?

This trade idea is entirely hypothetical.  I don't even know if Cleveland is willing to ship Lee.

Some still think Morse is valuable.  I disagree.

Maybe Cleveland's Front Office has given up on Lee and believe he has no value.

by Patrick517 on Oct 28, 2007 10:18 AM PDT up reply actions

He's a starting pitcher that once had sucess
He's not gonna be for free.  The Indians are gonna want somebody who is gonna be good enough to play in the majors sometime.

I don't really
Jason Bay is a terrible fit for us. Pull heavy RH hitter who is terrible on defense. I'm just curious what he'll fetch if Huntington is actually shopping him.

by Matthew on Oct 28, 2007 12:00 PM PDT up reply actions

For some reason
I thought he was left handed...weird.

by Edgar for Pres on Oct 28, 2007 12:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Cleveland's situation
is that they have talent that they are going to have problems protecting during the next rule 5 draft because of their considerable depth. What would they possibly want with Mariner surplus garbage irrespective of their evaluation of Lee? They will likely try to package Lee with a couple of good prospects to get something of true value that they need. A little research into the proposed trading partners situation and needs would eliminate the impules for junk threads like this. Try it!

How about a moratorium
on trade proposals involving players the M's have released (Campillo and Green)?

by G_ on Oct 29, 2007 9:35 AM PDT reply actions

Yes.
That was a stupid thing to do.

by Patrick517 on Oct 29, 2007 9:51 AM PDT up reply actions

well what if....
we signed them and then immediately traded them? Didn't think of that, now did ya?!
district = denmark

by MarinerintheDistrict on Oct 29, 2007 1:08 PM PDT up reply actions

MLB rules prohibit the M's from doing that
Per MLB rules, when a team signs a free agent, the player receives automatic no-trade protection until June of the forthcoming season.  Betcha didn't know that, eh?

by G_ on Oct 29, 2007 1:27 PM PDT up reply actions

It sorta works like that...
I believe the player can veto the trade, but he can still be traded provided he gives his consent.
