I win

I totally pwned David J. Corcoran on the Mariners trivia on Facebook. This may be the greatest accomplishment of my short and uninspiring life.

300 character fun fact: The '95 Mariners were 18-23 in one-run games.

Um.
pwning Corco on ANYTHING isn't an accomplishment.  Especially on M's trivia...

;-)

(okay, he can probably pwn anyone on highway stuff, except my wife who works for the WSP)

Your wife is a WSP?
Don't uh...well...let's just say that taking pictures of highway signs is an inattentive driving ticket waiting to happen.

Employee, yes
Trooper, no.  She's a 'civilian' at HQ.  But she does work pretty closely with Chief Batiste.

And, damn, is it hard to ride in the car with her.

I imagine!
And I'm guessing she does most of the driving when both of you are in the car?

Heh.
I could only wish.  When she does start her lecturing, I immediately offer to switch seats.  That mostly leads to either her shutting up or giving me the huge guilt trip that I don't love the family enough...

By the way
my facebook name is David J Corcoran I, not David J. Corcoran.

Facebook's automated name change approval system, by the way, approved the move from David Corcoran to David J Corcoran I, but disapproved the move from David J Corcoran I to David J. Corcoran I

That name approval system is lame
My facebook account was under an assumed name for months, and then when I changed it to a different assumed name they didn't seem to mind at all.

My boss, an actuary, told me an actuarial joke.  It wasn't funny, of course, but the mere fact that actuaries have jokes kind of blew my mind.

trust me
we get wayyyyyyyyyy geekier than those. It's the reason I love Futurama over most every other show. There are so many completely obscure math/science jokes embedded. You can probably name any episode and I'll find at least a few jokes that only people with hard science degrees will get.

by ppl4life on Oct 24, 2007 3:22 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just out of curiosity...
...as a non-numbers person, why on earth would anybody need to know the millionth decimal place of pi?  Has it just become an entirely academic exercise at this point, to find the furthest decimal of pi that can be found, or is there some practical application for the millionth/billionth/trillionth digit of pi?

And please, if and when you explain, remember, i'm a guy that doesn't even balance a checkbook for fear of mis-adding 3 and 5, so please, dumb it down.

Well...
Maybe we won't need the number itself for those sorts of things, but certainly the technology behind computing it to a trillion digits has the possibility of doing so...

tell that to the magnetic fields

by Matthew on Oct 24, 2007 4:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well right
the way pi is computed via summation would indicate that it will never end.

But still, you've gotta hold onto the hope.

If pi were discovered to have an end, the world may be able to be turned upside down. Black could become east, up could end up being white

no
that you have to hold onto hope that something theoretically impossible by definition could one day be theoretically proved true?

IDK which i'd prefer
my condo faces south so I get the sun shining into my bedroom in the morning, which is great for sunrises like this morning (beautiful), but kinda irritating overall, especially after a drinking night.

Then again, watching the sun set over the Olympics and Puget Sound is pretty nice.

I wonder what it's like to see the sun set over Rainier on a clear evening. That must be spectacular. Not sure if I've ever seen a pic of it though.

by Matthew on Oct 24, 2007 4:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm really not sure where you would need
to take that picture from to get a clear shot. I haven't been up around Rainier in quite some time.

other peaks that may obscure your view. I'm trying to think of where you could get a nice clear shot.

ok, last time i made a diary about the M's Mailbag
it was met with much debate, so im going to forgo that here...

but since we're talking about mariners fans, i have to say that i think ive found the award winner for the most clueless fan:

Chance F. from Porterville, CA writes

During the '07 season, Ichiro had thoughts of leaving Seattle. After a fairly close playoff run and a positive look for next season, has he or will he sign an extension on his contract?

I dont think theres any argument about this one being dumb, is there?
