Gyroball Figured Out

this video may be old i'm not sure, but a friend of mine just sent it to me

http://youtube.com/watch?v=hEb3CAh_YeA

to fill the character requirement, here's a George Carlin bit of genius

"99 Things You Need to Know

  1. There are more than 99 things you need to know
  2. Nobody knows how many things there are to know
  3. It's more than three
  4. There's no way of knowing how many things you need to know
  5. Some of the things you need to know are things you already know
  6. Some of the things you need to know are things you only think you know
  7. Some of the things you need to know are things you used to know and then forgot
  8. Some of the things you need to know are things you only thought you forgot and actually still know
  9. Some of the things you need to know are things you know but don't really know you know
  10. Some of the things you need to know are things you don't yet know you need to know
  11. Some of the things you think you need to know are things you probably don't really need to know
  12. Some of the things you need to know are things known only by people you don't know
  13. Some of the things you need to know are things nobody knows
  14. Some of the things you need to know are things that are unknowable
  15. Some of the things you need to know are things that can only be imagined
  16.  At anytime the list of things you need to know can be abruptly suspended
Now you know."

That's funny!
But it was nowhere near a strike. The catcher moved it about a foot just to try to frame it!
I'm never blocking a fire exit.

It's still funny
and those mechanics are still whack.

Wow
Best pitch I've ever seen.

Great pitch.
I've often wondered why right-handed pitchers don't do something similar to pick runners off first.  They're facing away from first, so firing the ball backward shouln't be that hard with some practice, and the runners sould never see it coming.

Because it would be a balk

Well if you're going to be all technical.

They could do it if there were runners
on first and third? That would be risky though.

still a balk
they could do it to mess up the batter with nobody on, since a balk is hardly an option

Would it be?
The pitcher has stepped up the mound, looks to be throwing to third but chucks the ball backwards, to first.  Or even chucks the ball to third in the same method as the video.  He has not made a motion for the plate.

Not off the mound
but you know what I mean.

Why would that be a balk?
You're not required to step off the rubber to throw to first as long as you don't make a motion to the plate.  So, instead of going into your windup, you just hurl the ball behind you.

I don't see how that's a balk.

I remember seeing Gaylord Perry do this
at least I think it was him, during an old timers game before an M's game in the early 90's.

Miraculously, there's some info about this game.  Thanks Sports and Bremertonians

Wow
I just watched it.  That could not have been less of a strike, but it was still one of the sweetest things I've ever seen.
