nitpicking
The Holocaust was an extension of Hitler's goal when he went to war (lebensraum). Not to mention the fact that a number of concentration and extermination camps were located in countries such as Poland, and as we all know, Hitler's invasion of Poland instigated the official start of the War.
Germany couldn't have performed the Holocaust without starting WW2.
I know your post was a joke, but I can't help but point out the fallacy behind it.

It's not just the Midwest
Which is like saying...
Srsly. Hello, millions of people who were living in the North and South American continent in 1492 say "Hi, we discovered this place LOOONG ago".
And that's entirely aside from the Vinland colony and the regular trips the Greenland Vikings took to Labrador...

The Vinnish
The world as we knew it was rooted in Europe. When Europe discovered America, that's exactly what it was, a discovery.
David....
There's direct physical evidence, man. Just give up.

What do you mean "we"?
It didn't. Really. And the Mesoamerican and Incan cultures were going strong.
YOU might think it's this way because of the books you've been taught history from, but honestly, there's a lot more out there than European history. Native Americans are not just hired actors in a Western.

- You were not recognizing American citizenship status
- You were impeding our trade with France
- You were helping the Indians

My understanding of it
The incidents involving the retaking of our sailors were the spark that caused the declaration of war were a bit dodgy, but you shouldn't mistake that as the reason for the war itself - it simply acted as an outlet for the pent up tension.
Anyway, 1) and 2) were not stopped by the treaty on Ghent, but rather by the end of the Napoleonic Wars, which lifted any requirement to hurt the French by annoying her allies and relieved the pressure on HMRN to maintain full manpower.

I know
And let's be realistic about this, the impressments were not restricted to just actual british deserters.
Yeah, I'm not saying the impressments were right
I'd say that the war was an embarassment on the US side and an expensive pain in the ass from ours, which is why it ended so meekly.

About right
All things aside
I think it was thousands...
Several thousand?
Also, Capt. Phillip Broke of HMS Shannon says 'lolz frigates'. Well, he probably wouldn't have said that, but the sentiment would be close.

Taking your argument to an extreme, shouldn't the descendants of say, the Japanese who participated in atrocities in WW2, to use a non-nazi example, stand up for their ancestors?

Well
Native American societies outside of the Mayans and Incans weren't really good for much, and the forementioned societies were outrageously bloodthirsty. Any society so violent and perverse can't fairly be called a "civilization". Also, besides certain areas of dramatic advancement, the Mayans were essentially stone age.
One might even say

Uh, are you serious?
You realize that Europe during the middle Ages and Renaissance wasn't exactly a walk in the park, right? Hell, at the time of Columbus the English had just gotten through 30 years of bloody civil war.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wars_of_the_Roses
Oh, and Columbus's monarch? Responsible for this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isabella_of_Castile
If you are expecting "civilization" from Europe in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, you're going to be sadly disappointed. It only gets uglier once we get to the Thirty Years' War.

by Graham MacAree on Oct 15, 2007 1:01 AM PDT up reply actions
Civil war isn't indicative of wickedness
Europe wasn't a nice place then, but that is to be expected in a land of immense power and fractional seats of power. Either way, Europe was better off than the rest of the world. Either way, the most blatantly disgusting act, the inquisition, was seriously overblown -- it didn't claim the lives of more than a couple thousand all told.
And your point is?
