Mariner's Mailbag question induces vomit once again

The question, hopefully being posed by someone under the age of 10, is as follows:

If you have a pitcher in the rotation that has a decent bat, is it possible to DH another position player instead of the pitcher?
--Brendan B., Olympia, Wash.

Awful, just awful... I thought the people calling in on the pregame radio show were bad, but this... this is terrible

What?
That question doesn't even make sense! I thought they were supposed to be edited?

Any chance
that Brendan B from Oly meant to ask if they can use the starting pitcher, instead of a "hitter" for the DH slot in the batting order?

On a personal note, I hope I get to see Micah Pwnings (AZ-SP) used as the DH in Fenway or Jacobs Field.

Me too.
I seriously think they need to consider batting him as high as 6th next season during his starts.
These pretzels....are making me thirsty!

Hell
I'd put him at cleanup. Kid probably has more raw power than anyone else here except for Reynolds or Young.

I'd love to see this happen.
I wish coaches, managers and front offices would get away from being scared to death of possible injuries. If the guy is one of your best options at the plate and in the field, then use him!

He could get hurt just as easily "carrying luggage" or "washing his truck" or any of the other dumb injuries you hear about.

And it's not like he's some great shakes as a
starting pitcher either.

Should he get injured, he could easily be replaced on the piching end.

His future as I see it is as the next Brooks Kieschnick, but with a longer more versatile career.

by Corco on Oct 11, 2007 12:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Actually
His last 2 months says otherwise:

3-3, 3.02 ERA, 59.2 IP, 45/13 K/BB, BAA .196. This while pitching just a few of those innings at Chase Field. His last 2 starts have been dominating.

Hitting though is huge (sample size alert):

.333/.349/.683, Yup...an OPS of 1.032.

Why does it not make sense?
He's asking whether, if you've got a pitcher that hits better than your SS, can you have the DH hit in place of the SS rather than in place of the pitcher.  Pitcher bats, SS doesn't.

Clearly you can't, but for someone just learning baseball it doesn't seem like an unreasonable thing to wonder.

It doesn't make
sense, because, there's no "for." Without it, it looks like he was asking whether or not, you can use a different position player for the pitcher.

Nope.
I got the exact same message, and 3 seconds' thought about the question should lead anyone to do the same.

It's hardly great prose, but it isn't nonsensical or idiotic, either.

It makes more sense when you put it that way
Can't find the article... what did they say in response?

by Gomez on Oct 10, 2007 6:51 PM PDT up reply actions

not a very good answer either...
The manager can put the pitcher in the lineup, but that would remove the DH, who cannot play a position in the field.

I understand what he's asking and i still think its a dumb question, but i concede that maybe its just something that i wouldn't even think twice about instead of thinking about it from a person who's just learning the game.

On my HS freshman baseball team
I once DHed for our second baseman. He was pissed.

by DCMariner on Oct 10, 2007 4:51 PM PDT reply actions

i found more humor in this gem:
"I enjoy rooting for the guys like a Willie Bloomquist, who are strong role players. What are some of these former Mariners players doing today -- Rich Amaral, Luis Ugueto, Charles Thomas, Jose Panaiagua, Greg Pirkl, Bob Wolcott, Mark McLemore, Bucky Jacobsen? Are any of them still in baseball?
--Brian D., Bremerton, Wash.

All of them are out of organized baseball, raising families and perhaps the next generation of Major League players. "

heh yeah
i don't think they're doing much fact checking for these questions...

there was another one about whether there has ever been an infield with all 'B' last names in the game at the same time (like it was on Sept. 14th with Bloomquist, Betancourt, Beltre, Broussard, and Burke), and he just said that it was the only time it happened this season. The question was clearly whether it had ever happened, but Jim Street is lazy

That one bugged me too,
he didn't even attempt to answer the question that was actually asked.

And with the 12th Pick in the 2025 Draft...
...the Mariners select Bucky Jacobsen Junior, First Baseman, Hermiston High School...
Imagine what the speed of lightning would be if it didn't zig-zag...

Whats truely scary
is that Felix may very well still be dominating then if everything goes as we hope.

by DCMariner on Oct 10, 2007 7:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah
he'll be 39, should be closing in on about 300 wins. Crazy.

by Corco on Oct 10, 2007 7:44 PM PDT up reply actions

With this team? Maybe
100 career wins.

I wonder if the kid had Sexson in mind
when he posed that question. I have to admit that thought has crossed my mind, too, during many of Richie's at-whiffs.
