10/1: Open One-Game Playoff Thread

First Pitch: 4:37pm PDT

and Jake Peavy (19-6, awesome) vs. and Josh Fogg (10-9, not)

----------

A lot of people think the Padres can't hit, but their .771 road OPS actually ranks fourth in the NL. Petco just happens to murder offensive performance at a level of which even Mariner fans can't conceive. In a National League field that - let's face it - totally sucks, either one of these teams is perfectly capable of catching fire and losing in the Series. They just have to get through today first.

On the topic of one-game playoffs, you'll never guess which team was the biggest choker of all time.

I predict
Dante Bichette and Vinny Castilla hit back-to-back, pinch-hit home runs in the bottom of the 9th to win it for the Rockies.

Castilla first
because we need Bichette to do the hyper-fist pump after he hits his walkoff blast.

This has been an interesting season
Three teams - M's, Brewers, Mets - were all in great shape (at least record-wise) in late July, and they're all golfing now.  Meanwhile, the Hated Natural Rivals are playing for their lives.  As much as I wanted the four-way tie, I'll take the one-game playoff.  These things are fun.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

The Mets are now the #2 choker of all time.Ouch.

Interesting
If the M's had lost their one game playoff then they would have had the 14th biggest choke of all-time.

I'm torn, but I think I'm rooting for our
hated natural rivals.

The dramatist in me...
...wants to root for the Rockies, because it's a better story - plucky underdogs, outta nowhere, lots of wins at the right time, blah blah blah, but I think overall I gotta go with the Padres as well, if only because I've spent a big chunk of the last three summers watching their AAA kids.

An excellent point
and I won't be upset if the Pads lose.  But really, there's nothing better than a one-game crapshoot like this.

I don't consider the '03 Ms
chokers. They raced out to a huge lead and then played pretty much .500 ball the way in. They got passed by teams playing incredible baseball.

They let golden chances slip by, but I don't say they choked.

by Matthew on Oct 1, 2007 3:23 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

agree
the M's in 03 won like 93 games or something. That should be good for a wild card or a divsion. That just shows how much better the other teams were. Not really a choke

Mostly because I would like to see MLB pay a stiff price for stretching the postseason schedule out to a ludicrous 32 days.  Go ahead and try to play World Series games at night in Denver on October 27, 28 and 29...let's see what weather cards Mother Nature deals you.

on the mariners web site
"Lineup: Ichiro, Beltre, designated hitter Raul Ibanez, Sexson, catcher Kenji Johjima, shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt and second baseman Jose Lopez are signed through next season. Right fielder Jose Guillen, a positive force on the field and in the clubhouse, wants to return, but an abundance of outfielders -- which includes Adam Jones and Wladimir Balentien -- might persuade the organization to think young."

Mets by far
With all the expectations.  Fortunately, playing in New York, the team can expect the fan base to be understanding and forgiving.

Scott Schoeneweis-Roider
From Rotoworld:

"Scott Schoeneweis received six steroid shipments from Signature Pharmacy while playing for the White Sox in 2003 and 2004, ESPN is reporting.
Just keep kicking the Mets while they're down. The source who reviewed the invoices said that Schoeneweis spent $1,160 on the steroids. He received five packages from May 2003 through 2004, five of which contained testosterone and three of which contained stanozolol. Schoeneweis just finished the first year of his three-year, $10.8 million contract with the Mets. He had a 5.03 ERA in 59 innings."

The 2 teams tied in the division play a tiebreaker game.  The winner wins the division, the loser plays the other tied team for the wild card.  And, no, the loss in the division tiebreaker does not count for purposes of the wild card.

Here's a perfect playoff scenario for NYY
I want to see A-Rod go 10-15 in the ALDS with 4 HR and 1 game winning HR...but Jeter makes a game-ending error for the Indians to advance.  A-Rod gets ripped in the papers, A-Rod opts out, Wilson Betemit is the 3B for NYY next year.  Yankees miss the playoffs, A-Rod's team wins the world series.

I'm pretty sure it's never legal to block the plate

by Matthew on Oct 1, 2007 10:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You can be sure
but you'd be wrong. A player with the ball can block whatever he wants. If he doesn't have the ball, he's got to show some daylight to the bag/plate unless he's making a play for the ball.

OBSTRUCTION is the act of a fielder who, while not in possession of the ball and not in the act of fielding the ball, impedes the progress of any runner.
Rule 2.00 (Obstruction) Comment: If a fielder is about to receive a thrown ball and if the ball is in flight directly toward and near enough to the fielder so he must occupy his position to receive the ball he may be considered "in the act of fielding a ball." It is entirely up to the judgment of the umpire as to whether a fielder is in the act of fielding a ball. After a fielder has made an attempt to field a ball and missed, he can no longer be in the "act of fielding" the ball.

by JOlderdude on Oct 1, 2007 10:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

There is also this:
Rule 7.06(b) Comment: Under 7.06(b) when the ball is not dead on obstruction and an obstructed runner advances beyond the base which, in the umpire's judgment, he would have been awarded because of being obstructed, he does so at his own peril and may be tagged out. This is a judgment call.
NOTE: The catcher, without the ball in his possession, has no right to block the pathway of the runner attempting to score. The base line belongs to the runner and the catcher should be there only when he is fielding a ball or when he already has the ball in his hand.

Funny how ESPN's all focused on Holliday not touching the plate on the replays, and completely ignore the fact that Holliday looked really hurt on that play and may not be 100% for the playoffs.

Like it was.
I had the luxury of being busy for a week to find out that the M's sucked away their lead, got angry and then moved on.

If I'm a Padre fan, I am reliving this game much like we've all relived David Justice and Al Martin so many times before.

by tworsandtwols on Oct 1, 2007 9:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Similar question I posed earlier
would you rather we lost it like we did, or like the Mets did?
Which would hurt the longest?  I hated that we were basically out of it in early Sept, but I sure would not want to be the Padres, the Mets, or even St Louis, who had climbed to within a game of the Cubs and then lost a zillion in a row.

by LongBeachDave on Oct 1, 2007 9:50 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

The Mets collapse was worse
Like the M's, a collapse doomed them, but the Mets had a much better team and were expected to win, so it was far more disappointing, especially given it happened right at the end.

I think with the M's, a team that everyone surprised in even being in it in the first place, dropping out, it was more of a painful resignation as the losses piled up.

The M's will be back and I think this will get thrown on the pile with the other painful M's moments... but this Mets collapse is gonna hurt for their fans for a long time.
