Mariners pursuing Erstad?

from the LA Times: Erstad appears to have options, though Angels may not be one of them

Erstad said six teams have expressed serious interest in signing him, either as a left fielder, center fielder or utility player. Though he declined to name the teams, the Oakland Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, Colorado Rockies and Seattle Mariners are believed to be among them.

Ugh
I'd take him over Willie....maybe.
Aici zace un om despre care nu se ştie prea mult.

Ixnay
We wouldn't get Erstad instead of Bloomquist; it would be Erstad + Bloomquist. I also expect the Mariners bench starting the season to consist of two RH bats and one LH bat (not counting Rivera, who for all practical purposes doesn't count as a bat).

Whoopee!
Oh, shit. There goes Broussard for Bob WIckman or something.

I'm disinclined to believe this
If only because the article also listed Oakland, and Beane's smarter than that.

Erstad actully makes some sense
Seeing as we don't have a very good 1st baseman (hitting and fielding), and if Swisher is at 1B, Kielty starts in LF, Kotsay center and Bradley RF. Kotsay and Bradley are health risks, and Kielty can't hit right handers.

Not to mention having defense like Erstad's in the INF or OF would be very valuable.

For the right price... I could see it happening.

Erstad's ridiculously overrated
And apart from Chavez, Beane doesn't do overrated.

He also can't hit.

Cant hit eh?
He'll fit right in!

An assumption...
I think I can speak for the vast majority of A's fans when I say that Erstad makes no sense, and Beane is too smart to go down the dark path.

If Willie weren't tethered to Hargrove
Then I'd say he would be good to pick up for $500k, battle it out, and take the 25th spot.

However, Willie is tethered to Hargrove.

Anyway, here's to guessing he'd cost a heck of a lot more than $500k.

Also, to avoid a bifurcation, there are better options than either of them.

If they pick up Erstad and "give away" Broussard, that would just be the cherry on top of this crappy offseason.

Erstad would not accept a 25th spot
given other teams would be willing to start him everyday.

Is there a team ...
... who would be willing to slot him as a starter??

I'm sure someone would surprise us

And...
...the Mariner front office is proving that over and over...

Neither Erstad nor Willie
could slug their ways out of a wet paper bag. They're both white. They're both gritty. Both go several days between shaving. You know what comes next...

Welcome to the team, Mr. Erstad! In order to make room for you, we'll have to cut Felix.

WFB is better than Erstad
and we sure don't need two utility guys.  I don't really see where he'd fit in the team.  The only spot I could see is as a 4th OF until Guillen gets healthy.  That would be horrible.  Reed is a better OF and Bloomquist is a better utility guy.  Get the hell away from our team Erstad.

Wow.
Erstad doesn't have a single redeeming quality.  Which is why there is probably truth to the rumor.  At this point, Bavasi's only hope is to make so many bad moves that no one is there to wathc the M's this season.

Did you know...
that Erstad used to play football at Nebraska?

by Mariner John on Jan 7, 2007 4:29 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yes
because i remember SC talking about that a year or two ago when he plowed into that catcher (the team/player name both scape me)

he made like a hard football tackle

Well, sort of
He was the punter.

maybe the Seahawks should sign him,
things can't possibly get any weirder for them.

Can Bavasi be arrested
if he ruins the Mariners and then takes a cushy job with Angels in '08?

by Tom C on Jan 8, 2007 1:43 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If the Yanks are going to play
Doug Mienk(*&@#!%)z, then Erstadt should get ABs at 1st base somewhere.
