Little Tidbits of News, nothing M's related...

I will post sites later when they become officially official.

Mark Loretta is signing with the Astros, 1 yr/$2.5M + $1M in incentives.

Doug Mientkiewicz is signing with the Yanks, but I don't have the official monies.

The RJ to AZ trade should go through in the next day or so.  Luis Vizciano + at least one major prospect going to NYY.

And
The Sean Burroughs era begins, as the M's announced officially today that he has been signed......another fine mess Bavasi has gotten us into.......nyuck, nyuck, nyuck....

Umm
While I understand that everything Bavasi does is justifiably scrutinized but this is actually a very reasonable and low risk/high reward signing. Nothing wrong with this at all, especially when we're playing Willie Bloomquist twice that to be essentially equal value.

It is low risk
and more than likely low reward, but coming on the heals of his other poor signings and trades, it is like putting salt in an open wound.  I've become so negative about the M's future (for the next few seasons) because of the moves Bavasi and company have made...it is so reminiscent of the 80's and early 90's.  Everyone brought it would have to far exceed reasonable expectations for them to legitimately compete this year.  The rest of the division sucks too, but they don't play all their games against other losers too.

Cynicism is informed optimism.

So...
He was once a top prospect, still fairly young and has had some injuries that have plagued him a bit the past year and a half. Sure, he'll probably never reach his max potential, but he has the ability to be a decent bench bat if healthy. Plus, it's a minor league contract and only $450K if he makes the big league roster.

Yeah, Bavasi's made mistakes. But not everything he touches turns to shit. Sometimes he does deserve credit where it's due.

Right
Burroughs is now in competition with Greg Dobbs for a bench spot.

I'll take Burroughs every time.

This isn't an impact acquisition, but it makes the M's better.

by Jerry on Jan 4, 2007 10:04 AM PST up reply actions

I wouldn't necessarily
say it makes the M's better or if Burroughs is a better bench option than Dobbs. It's just a low risk/high reward (possibly) signing.

Really?
I look at Burroughs' track record, compared to what Dobbs has done over his career, and Burroughs strikes me as the clearly better player.

He is younger.  He has hit better consistently, and done so at a higher level.

And he plays good defense.

I really can't see one single aspect of the game where Dobbs is better.  He may have a bit more power, but Dobbs is by no means a guy with good pop.

Dobbs does have really impressive sideburns and a hot girlfriend, though.

Seriously, you know everything?
Is Greg, like, cheating on Heidi?  I've heard his wife is pretty hot, but I did't know he had a girlfriend on the side, too.

Man...

Iceberg, right ahead!

Well
Burroughs - .280/.340/.358 (1537 AB)
Dobbs - .257/.291/.351 (222 AB)

Both hit the ball on the ground a ton, which is both good and bad. While Burroughs surface stats look solid for a bench bat, he's been horrible the past two years.

I'm not saying that Dobbs is better than Burroughs, I'm just not sold that the team should count on Burroughs to provide more than what Dobbs could.

Just an option
Yeah, two options are better than one.

The M's have the luxury of picking the better of the two, which is nice.

I just hope that Burroughs wins the job.  He gets on base, and he has some upside.

If the M's end up with a bench of Reed, Burroughs, Bloomquist, and Rivera, that wouldn't be too shabby.  Although they would lack a good RH bat.

Or a RH bat period.

Except, of course...
...for the fear that it might actually preclude a Beltre trade.  I'm not expecting one, really, but I also wasn't expecting Soriano to be traded for a soon-to-be-non-tender and Snelling+Fruto to be traded for a guy whose legs are in almost similar shape to Edgar's (with nowhere near the talent with the bat to justify a roster spot, let alone shelling out prospects and heaps of millions of dollars for 2-3 years).
Iceberg, right ahead!

I guess that could be a concern
and while Bavasi is an idiot, he's not a complete dumb ass. Even he has to know that would be an absolutely monsterous downgrade.

by Trent on Jan 4, 2007 10:05 AM PST up reply actions

Doubtful
I wouldn't read too much into this.

The only way that the M's would trade Beltre now would be to clear payroll for a big acquisition.

Since Barry Zito is off the market, I don't see happening.

I think other clubs have saved the M's from themselves in this case.

I'm not sure
I'd classify any of the names being thrown around in conjuntion with the Yankees/DBacks deal as a "major prospect."
