Can Anybody Think of a Reason Not to Fire Grover Now?

I can't. Given the state of the team at this point, wouldn't it make sense to audition Dan Rohn (or anybody for that matter)rather than postpone the inevitable? I don't get the impression that the players like or respect Hargrove, so wouldn't they be likely to respond favorably to the idea that management is not going to tolerate the status quo?

Save public face
Firing people is a lot easier in the offseason, both legistically and PR-wise. At this point, the Mariners will just wait and do it then.

There's just not a lot to gain by firing him this close to the end of the season.

Firing Hargrove
At the end of May made sense because there was still a possibility that they could salvage the season and get the most out of the team.

Now though?  Well, it's over.  Team Hargrove has become the AL West's whipping boy.  Better to let Hargrove bury his own grave rather than punish someone else with the after-effects.

This is definately beyond a question of "if".  All we need to is answer the question of "when" Hargrove will be fired.

I agree with this
If the team tanks down the stretch, you can say he couldn't get the team to respond during a winnable pennant race.  Easier to fire him.

Well, if you need a reason to keep him...
I guess you could say the Ms might as well play for the protected draft pick to end the season instead of trying to claw their way up to finishing the year at .500.

They're currently sitting at the 12th pick, but could easily fall down to 7th or 8th by the end of the year.

I'd rather finish the season at .500, but if Grover's going to stick around until the end of the year, some good may as well come of it.

He deserves to stay because
he's taken his team to the World Series before.

Also, he's been a positive role model for his son, Willie.

I bet you Willie
can think of a few reasons.

Yes but
nobody can understand what they are because Willie mumbles when his mouth is full.

I just hope
that the media doesn't label Hargrove a scapegoat.

Firing Grover
Actually, can anybody think of a good reason for not firing Grover before they hired him?

If you can't outmotivate and you can outthink your opposition, what exactly do you have to offer?

Fire him now and see if Rohn can do the job.

Of course the M's aren't going to win this year  whoever they hire, but replacing Grover might mean that Ichiro & Kenji & whoever actually thinks about how to win a game do not have to commit intellectual seppuku on a gamely basis.

The past predicts the future...
Check out this petition from 2003:  http://www.gopetition.co.uk/online/2685.html  Everything old is new again.  And to think...the M's hired this knucklehead...someone will have penance to do in baseball hell for this.

My favorite part
is that petition only has one signature.

I am amazed
how strikingly similar the O's fan's gripes are to the M's fans' gripes.
