Targets
I'm all for trade mongering, but sometimes it gets plain ridiculous. So instead of making up deals, I'd like some ideas just on potential targets. Who do you want? Do these people help short-term? Long-term? Might they be amenable to an extension if they're free-agents next year? How can they help the team today? Tommorrow?
Examples:
Baltimore: Sellers - LHP Erik Bedard - Free Agency - 2006
Erik came up and seemed to have little difficulty adjusting to the majors. While he's been hurt here and there in the past, he's putting up some good numbers on a non-contending team in this his age 27 season. Handedness would help him in Safeco. A Short-term solution, not likely to be amenable to an extension.
St. Louis: Contenders - LH 1B Chris Duncan - Free Agency - 2006
Duncan is a LH Power bat stuck behind Pujols. I know that with Sexson's money he's playing everyday and that we have Eduardo Perez profoming the same roll that Duncan would. But...man he could be a monster.
I've just got to mention Anthony Reyes here as well. The Cards wouldn't part with him but...dreamy sigh
Chi White Sox: Contenders - Brandon McCarthy - Free Agency - 2006
Tall LHP who started up until this year and could still start if he weren't trapped behind Chicago's rotation of doom. Like Bedard, likely to test the Free Agency waters.
Who else? Time to put your Baseball Prospectus to work. Dig up some names that HAVEN'T been bandied about to death.

LOL
We can throw in Perez
oh wait....
If we a looking at unlikely trade candidates.....
If the M's are interested in Soriano, why not go for another costly star who fits their needs better?
Obviously, Abreu would have to OK the deal, and I suspect he would be unwilling to do so. The M's would have to pick up his option, making him the highest paid player on the club. But Abreu has the best plate discipline in baseball, steals bases, and has lefty power. Perfect fit. Stick him in LF, and the M's defense would be phenomenal.
Lefty power?
He's also shown some uneven home/road splits (although nothing as drastic as Soriano) which combined with the salary he'll be making and his age make him very unappealing.
I just posted on this...
The difference is that he:
- is going to make 15 million in 2007, and has an option in 2008
- has a no-trade clause that means his agent is going to want the option guaranteed BEFORE we make the move.
In other words... this would kill most of our salary flexibility.
Pass.

McDonald's Super Size LF?
Yeah, you are right, but...
The contract is obviously an issue. If the M's pick him up, it would cost them $15 mil next year, and then likely $16 mil in 2008 (he will want his option picked up). That is a whole lot of cash. However, the huge numbers involved are offset greatly by the fact that he is only on the books for two years. At the end of the contract, he will only be 34. It is a huge amount of money, but the commitment is short. Compared to what a guy like Carlos Lee or Alfonso Soriano will get in free agency, the M's might be paying a million or two more for a much shorter commitment.
In terms of what it means for the M's payroll, the club will have Pineiro (6.3 mil), Everett (4 mil), Meche (3.9 mil), Moyer (5.5 mil + lots of incentives), and Guardado (6.25 mil). The M's also have Richie Sexson's bonus coming off the books, which will free up another 3.5 million. That adds to a bare minimum of 29.5 million. Obviously, having Abreu on the payroll eats up a lot of that cash. But the M's would still have about 15 million left to spend without adding any payroll. That is a lot of money. With that type of cash, the M's could go after Jason Schmidt or Daisuke Matsuzaka, plus resign Moyer. If they add a few million to the roster, which makes sense for an improving club looking to make a run to the playoffs, then they should have enough money to fill their needs.
Instead of focusing on $$$ and his low HR rates this year, look at what Abreu can do:
-He gets on base. His current OBP is .439. His lifetime OBP is .413. Abreu has consistently gotten on base at a ridiculous clip. This is the M's biggest need.
-I mentioned his power numbers above. But he always hits his share of HRs. While his numbers aren't that great this year, his track record speaks for itself.
-He is a high % base stealer. He has averaged over 31 per year since 2000. His success rate is a solid 77%. That is Ichiro-level baserunning.
-He has a great track record of good health. In the past five years, he has missed 12 games. That is amazing. He plays everyday.
-He plays a good RF. He could play LF or RF for the M's. He gets flack for not bashing into walls. But so does Ichiro. He would help improve the M's outfield defense.
-Overall, he has averaged .302/.413/.508. That type of production is valuable.
The biggest thing with Abreu is getting on base. For the M's, he would be an absoluately perfect #3 hitter. He would also add a lefty middle of the order bat to the lineup.
It will be interesting to see what the Phillies require for him. But the latest rumors suggest that the Phils main objective is to clear his payroll. If the M's picked up all his salary, they might not have to part with a huge amount of talent. At least not what the Nats are looking for in return for Soriano.
I am hoping that the M's just sit tight, bring in a few pitchers next offseason, and see what happens.
But look at how much that one addition helps the M's lineup (assuming the M's get some balls and ask Ichiro to do what is best for the team):
Ichiro CF
Lopez 2B
Abreu RF
Ibanez LF/DH
Sexson 1B
Johjima C
Snelling DH/LF
Beltre 3B
Betancourt SS
That is an awesome lineup. That one addition, coupled with moving Ichiro to CF, makes the lineup strong 1-9. With Abreu getting on base nearly half the time, Ibanez and Sexson would be driving in a LOT of runs. I like it.
Yea, that does sound sweet Jerry

Thats the kicker
It would depend heavily on how much of Abreu's salary the Phillies are willing to eat.
I have heard rumors in the media that the Phillies are looking mainly to ditch his contract. I have also heard that they are willing to eat some money to get back talent.
If the M's included Jones or Clement, then the Phillies would likely have to swallow some of that cash. If the M's were willing to take on all of his salary, it would be a lot different. The M's would have to deal some players regardless, but Abreu's huge salary is a major stumbling block.
Plus, who knows if Abreu would even be willing to come to Seattle. He is an NL player who has spent most of his career in a big-market East Coast city. Latino guys with that type of profile aren't often real excited about moving to Seattle. Who knows. I am totally speculating. But Abreu can dictate where he goes.

The standings say
What's your point?
Fox Sports
But he suggests that there has been a lot of interest in Raffy Soriano.
Given the M's current place in the standings (and below .500), this seems like a more likely scenario.
I wouldn't trade Soriano unless the M's were absolutely blown away by an offer. But you never know. This is the time of year when teams get those 'too good to pass up' types of trade offers.
Unfortunately, Finnigan is one of those guys
I would trade Meche before I'd let go of Soriano. Meche is gonna ink a big contract this winter and then he's going to go right back to being an inconsistent headache--I'd deal him now while the demand is high (same thing we should have done last year with Eddie).
We're kidding ourselves if we believe the M's have a shot at the postseason this year with Grover at the helm.

there's no way the O's get rid of Bedard
I should know, I picked him up for my fantasy team when I read about him and Mazzone. Since then, his line has been 5-0, 36 IP, 20 H, 2 ER (both HR), 6 BB, 38 K. Delicious.
He's still under arb though, and will be until 2008, I believe.
I picked him off the FA pile early last year
Honestly, when he's on, Bedard's one of my favorite pitcher in the game to watch. I'd love to have him.
Target
Faulty source appearantly, though they've been consistant in the past.
LOL I just picked up Chris Duncan
I think it'd be cool to give him a shot here, but who among our LF/DH types do we deal and who takes said guy?
