Carl Everett Death Watch

Or maybe that should be "Dearth Watch," since he's provided a dearth of offense. Ha! I'll be here all week.

Anyway: word is that Everett's option for 2007 automatically vests when he gets 450 ABs. He currently stands at 291.

So when is he likely to vest? Obviously that's tricky to compute -- it depends on whether Perez starts against lefties, and whether Everett is allowed to hit against lefty relievers, etc. But who wants to bother with that? Hard work is for losers! Instead, here's a quick and dirty and almost certainly incorrect calculation, but hopefully it gets us in the right ballpark:

291 ABs in 93 games played = 3.13 AB/game, which suggests that Carl will get his 450th AB 51 games from now, or on Tuesday, September 12, against the Blue Jays. Mark your calendars.

With interleague play behind us
I would expect that AB/game number to rise a bit. Though with the addition of Perez, Everett may be sitting on the bench more.

Too many variables.

Maybe Hargrove will give him 159 of his career at bats so the option vests today. It could be like Mr. 3000 where Hargrove has to suit up for a few games to redo those 159 at bats.

Don't bother me, I'm hustling.

450
plate appearances.  Not ABs.

Be afraid.

I was wondering about that.
Can anyone confirm? The online sources are very, very vague.

Going by PA vs AB
forces us to move the clock up a bit:

325 plate appearances in 93 games = 3.5/game.

125 more PA needed @ 3.5/game means Everett would get that appearance 36 games from now.

That would come on Saturday, August 26th, in a home game against the Red Sox.

Feh...
With this kind of production, he SHOULDN'T BE GETTING THOSE APPEARANCES.

And that you can blame on Hargrove...

Carl Everett is doing everything Grover demands:
  1.  Providing solid veteran leadership.
  2.  Displaying intangibles.
  3.  Being aggressive on the basepaths.
  4.  Showing grit and determination.
  5.  Giving 110 %.

Is it for sure?
450 PA?  Is that the number for sure or just the number everyone thinks it is?

That seems to be the general concensus
among everybody in the blogosphere. Though I don't think anybody has actually seen any hard numbers to that effect.
Fire Mike Hargrove!

I think he...
screamed at Grover just to get the at bats, to kick in the money and Grover being a weak pogue buckled.  If the front office ends up paying this turd next year they deserve it...

Reverend Everett doth bust out the irony...
.229 / .299 / .367.

Hint:  Find the OPS.

You get the feeling that Grover
may suffer from some sort of dementia.  It's pretty obvious he pays no attention to silly statistics like OPS, Slugging, or 'batting average.'

However, you would think he might rely on his memory at some point during the season and think:  "Hmmmm..you know, I can't remember the last time Carl had an RBI...why am I playing him again"?  OR  "wait, now...I don't think I've ever seen my boy Willie hit a homerun...or a double for that matter" OR "hey, didn't Mateo blow the game the last couple of times I've used him?"

I've never been more baffled by a Mariner manager before (and that's only because I'm too young to remember Maury Wills).
