WPA All Star Ballot, 6th vote (6-4-06)

Belated, I know.  This was actually compiled and mostly written Sunday.  The delay in completion and posting was largely a result of other extenuating personal circumstances.

Seeing the initial results of the actual All Star voting proved much more interesting thanks to this project.  For example, the current AL 2B leader in votes is Yankees 2B Robinson Cano.  Cano's WPA: -52.5, good for 13th (3rd last) in the AL, ahead of Placido Polanco (-110.3) and Mark Ellis (-134.6).  Ditto Craig Biggo in the NL: -39.9, 12th among eligible 2B's.

Some of the unpopular choices among diehards that are popular (if not leading) with voters, like Derek Jeter at AL SS and Mark Loretta at AL 2B, are actually tops at their positions in WPA, and thus by these methods are legitimate top players at their positions, no matter one's opinion.

Anyway, the list

AL 1ST BASE
6TH VOTE:

  1.  Jim Thome* - CWS (4):  143.3 (+37.1)
  2.  Jason Giambi - NYY (3):  136.8 (+30.5)
  3.  Paul Konerko - CWS (1):  124.2 (-21.0)
  4.  Travis Hafner - CLE (2):  111.8 (+0.1)
  5.  David Ortiz - BOS (5):  108.9 (+12.2)
Thome's not even on the ballot.  BTW, former media darling Chris Shelton?  Off the map with a 61.1 WPA, in 6th.

MARINER WATCH:  Big Suckxy's well in dead last with a -131.9.  Oh, but watch him unleash hell on those Royals!  Speaking of Royals, Doug Mientkiewicz is 2nd to last with -105.2.

AL 2ND BASE
6TH VOTE:

  1.  Mark Loretta - BOS (2):  143.6 (+17.8)
  2.  Adam Kennedy - ANA (1):  115.1 (-21.4)
  3.  Mark DeRosa* - TEX (NR):  100.0 (1st rating)
  4.  Brian Roberts - BAL (3):  88.6 (+0.8)
  5.  Mark Grudzielanek - KC (4):  83.7 (+25.3)
If I had to pick one Royals All Star rep, it would be Grudzielanek, who, along with his steady hitting, has not committed an error at 2B this season.  Meanwhile, DeRosa played well in Ian Kinsler's absence, but with Kinsler back, he'll be hard pressed to remain on the list.

Oh yeah, and Mark Loretta took over the top spot after a lackluster week from Adam Kennedy.

MARINER WATCH:  Jose Lopez's stock actually continues to DROP, as his WPA falls to 14.6, good for 8th.

AL SHORTSTOP
6TH VOTE:

  1.  Derek Jeter - NYY (1):  217.1 (-10.9)
  2.  Michael Young - TEX (2):  95.4 (+0.8)
  3.  Orlando Cabrera - ANA (3):  92.2 (+30.5)
  4.  Carlos Guillen - DET (5):  44.4 (-0.4)
  5.  Miguel Tejada - BAL (4):  41.7 (-10.7)
Jeter is Pujolsing the AL SS category.

MARINER WATCH:  Yuniesky Betancourt remains steady at -28.3, good for 8th.

AL 3RD BASE
6TH VOTE:

  1.  Melvin Mora - BAL (1):  170.5 (+11.3)
  2.  Ty Wigginton* - TB (3):  141.6 (+6.6)
  3.  Hank Blalock - TEX (2):  141.3 (-13.0)
  4.  Eric Chavez - OAK (4):  113.6 (-7.2)
  5.  Joe Crede - CWS (5):  52.8 (-7.4)
MARINER WATCH:  Adrian Beltre earns his paycheck in dead last (16th), with a -120.1.

AL CATCHER
6TH VOTE:

  1.  Jorge Posada - NYY (1):  211.6 (+37.6)
  2.  Ramon Hernandez - BAL (2):  160.3 (+27.0)
  3.  Joe Mauer - MIN (3):  113.9 (+19.9)
  4.  Jason Varitek - BOS (4):  87.1 (+23.9)
5.  Kenji Johjima - SEA (5):  38.8 (-9.6)

AL OUTFIELD (TOP 10)
6TH VOTE (TOP 3):

  1.  Nick Swisher* - OAK (1):  187.1 (+7.2)
  2.  Manny Ramirez - BOS (2):  179.9 (+8.6)
  3.  Jermaine Dye - CWS (6):  150.8 (+43.4)
  4.  Vernon Wells - TOR (10):  132.9 (+43.4)
  5.  Brad Wilkerson - TEX (7):  124.8 (+17.5)
  6.  Curtis Granderson - DET (4):  124.8 (+7.2)
  7.  Vladimir Guerrero - ANA (3):  115.4 (-24.5)
  8.  Alexis Rios* - TOR (9):  110.8 (+20.5)
  9.  Grady Sizemore - CLE (8):  110.7 (+17.4)
  10.  Casey Blake - CLE (5):  106.8 (-2.8)
Can you believe Alex Rios leads all write ins with 58,000 votes, over Nick Swisher?  Jermaine Dye sneaks into the top 3 with a big week after Vlad slumps to 7th.

AL ALL STAR BALLOT
6TH VOTE

C:  Jorge Posada - NYY
1B:  Jim Thome* - CWS
2B:  Mark Loretta - BOS
SS:  Derek Jeter - NYY
3B:  Melvin Mora - BAL
OF:  Nick Swisher* - OAK
OF:  Manny Ramirez - BOS
OF:  Jermaine Dye - CWS

NL 1ST BASE
6TH VOTE:

  1.  Albert Pujols - STL (1):  455.3 (+28.4)
  2.  Nomar Garciaparra - LAD (2):  225.2 (+40.4)
  3.  Ryan Howard - PHI (3):  186.5 (+22.1)
  4.  Lance Berkman - HOU (5):  129.3 (+9.9)
  5.  Todd Helton - COL (NR):  113.4 (+6.8)
Looks like NOMAAH will have plenty of chances to catch Pujols for the top spot, now that Pujols has a 'strained oblique' (anything that shelves you for 2-6 weeks has to be more than a 'strain').  And Pujols was on pace to have one of baseball's manliest seasons ever too.  Damn shame.  He was so good that he may hold the top WPA spot throughout his hiatus anyway.

NL 2ND BASE
6TH VOTE:

  1.  Chase Utley - PHI (1):  162.0 (+19.7)
  2.  Jeff Kent - LAD (2):  59.6 (E - injured)
  3.  Marcus Giles - ATL (5):  47.4 (+23.5)
  4.  Dan Uggla - FLA (3):  40.5 (-11.8)
  5.  Todd Walker - CHC (NR):  20.8 (+32.3)
Weak field that Chase Utley has pwned.

NL SHORTSTOP
6TH VOTE

  1.  Omar Vizquel - SF (1):  103.6 (+4.4)
  2.  Hanley Ramirez - FLA (3):  85.0 (+9.2)
  3.  Felipe Lopez - CIN (2):  67.5 (-18.3)
  4.  Wilson Betemit* ATL (5):  50.6 (+13.8)
  5.  Edgar Renteria - ATL (4):  50.5 (-14.8)
Felipe Lopez has cooled off, and steady ho-hum performance keeps the elderly Omar on top.

NL 3RD BASE
6TH VOTE:

  1.  Miguel Cabrera - FLA (2):  174.2 (+28.3)
  2.  Morgan Ensberg - HOU (1):  148.9 (-14.7)
  3.  Edwin Encarnacion - CIN (4):  132.9 (+29.9)
  4.  Scott Rolen - STL (NR):  110.8 (+63.2)!
  5.  Chipper Jones - ATL (3):  108.6 (-26.8)
Look at Scott Rolen explode onto the list!  Meanwhile, opposite performances from Miggy Cabrera and Morgan Ensberg lead to Cabrera getting his first All Star vote.

NL CATCHER
6TH VOTE:

  1.  Damian Miller - MIL (1):  78.6 (+6.3)
  2.  Paul LoDuca - NYM (3):  73.2 (+17.3)
  3.  Brian McCann - ATL (2):  56.9 (E - injured?)
  4.  Ryan Doumit - PIT (NR):  23.9 (+23.3)
  5.  Johnny Estrada - ARI (4):  5.6 (-27.1)
Weak list: these are the only eligible catchers in the NL with positive WPAs.  LoDuca creeps up on Damian Miller, but basically no one seems able to take charge in this category.

NL OUTFIELDERS (TOP 10)
6TH VOTE (TOP 3)

  1.  Ken Griffey Jr. - CIN (9):  176.6 (+51.7)!
  2.  Barry Bonds - SF (2):  172.8 (+9.7)
  3.  Bobby Abreu - PHI (3):  172.0 (+16.7)
  4.  Jason Bay - PIT (1):  157.6 (-31.4)
  5.  Aaron Rowand - PHI (4):  132.7 (-8.2)
  6.  Moises Alou - SF (6):  131.6 (E - injured)
  7.  Jacque Jones - CHC (NR):  129.2 (+47.8)
  8.  Carlos Lee - MIL (7):  122.8 (-5.3)
  9.  Andruw Jones - ATL (NR):  122.1 (+16.2)
  10.  Matt Holliday - COL (10):  116.7 (-4.9)
When he isn't injured, Junior is an awesome hitter.  Meanwhile, Jason Bay could not handle the WPA pressure and thus fell off the top 3 :P  So it goes.
