NPB Appreciation Thread

We talk often about good players in Japan and wanting them to come to MLB... which fans of the Nippon Pro Baseball league coughdeannacough find rather irksome, as the league's struggled with revenue over the years, as obviously well as losing their best players year after year (imagine your team's best players just up and leaving every year; can be demoralizing), and losing teams due to these losses.

People tend to forget that this is an entire league, with a rich history, a game that is entertaining to watch for its own separate reasons, and of course, crowds and a Japanese baseball culture that's nothing like anything you see in MLB.

Star-divide

So over time, while admittedly scouring YouTube for video on stars like Daisuke Matsuzaka, I've discovered a variety of odd and end videos on a variety of players and teams, that paint an enlightening picture of what NPB at its best can be like.  I want to share some of that here.

Excitement from the pitching and defense in the final outs of a Chiba Lotte Marines win.

Here's a funny video from some sort of TV game show featuring Matsuzaka.

They call the knuckleball the shake ball in Japan.

BENNY WOULD GO!  Remember Benny Agbayani?  Also... note the enthusiasm of the crowd for the AB.  This is telling: rather than sitting on their hands waiting for their team to do something, as we do in the US, the fans in this clip try and pump up their hitter during a rally.

Marc Kroon didn't amount to much in the states, but he went to Japan and became the Yokohama Baystars closer with serious 100 mph (160 km/h) gas, though Air Fukudome dropped a grand salami bomb on Kroonland in this clip.  Eat your heart out, Eddie.

How about a diving, turf munching catch on Astroturf by Kenji Morozumi, even with his team leading 8-2?  PRIDE AND HONOR.

Thoughts welcome.

Holy smokes
That was incredible: proper leaping salmon action.

The bowing at the end was pretty cool too.  In response to the ovation?

Bowing
I think he was bowing towards the players/trainers/coaches who were asking if he was alright.

I love the replay
The dive was graceful and perfectly timed.

Well
I suppose you don't realize that the fans cheer like that for EVERY AT BAT.  It's not just pumping up for ONE at-bat.  If you go to a game and sit in the ouendan section (ie, most of the outfield), you will be standing up and screaming and singing at the top of your lungs pretty much the entire time your team is up to bat (and sitting quietly while they aren't).  I had a blast with it when I was at games in Japan, but I've been told you can easily get sick of it after an entire season of standing and cheering and singing the same songs.  You can see lyrics here for the various teams and hear the music...

And no NPB video collection of this season is complete without Marty Brown and his Lou Piniella imitation, or the awesome resulting t-shirts.

Kroon has his own website.  It's pretty funny.

Well, appropriate because Kroon is funny looking
Also, is it sad that I hear that song on his front page and immediately think, "HEY, that was Torrealba's at-bat music!"?

Funny how he is identified by the speed of his fastest pitch, 161 km/h.  That's like nicknaming Justin Verlander "Verlander 101 mph!"

eh
the way I see it, I'd rather watch the best athletes of a particular sport playing amongst the best competition, even if it means they're not in their native country. I'm not sad about Freddy Adu leaving MLS to go play in Europe.

by Matthew on Jun 25, 2006 3:54 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah.
MLS is pansy soccer compared to Europe.  Exhibity A: Reyna, Claudio

I think people are scared of Adu going to Ghana and play, and want to keep him close to home.  Tommy on ESPN said the Americans need to develop a one name player.  ADU!

exactly
Landon needs to leave too

and the national team needs to hire a real coach next time.

I like Klinsmann
I think his style could play well in the US and help get fans interested.

I'd rather have Hiddink but he seems fairly committed to Russia

by Matthew on Jun 25, 2006 4:40 PM PDT up reply actions

He did leave
And he rode the pine during his entire stay in the German Bundislega...
YAY JOSE!

Seconded
on both parts.
Isn't this why Ichiro and all others want to come see if they are the BEST at their trade?

by Christian on Jun 25, 2006 4:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah
Though I certainly think people forget that the league we're plucking star Japanese players from isn't just a feeder league, but another nation's major league, a league with a personality, style and tradition all its own.

FWIW...
They call the knuckleball the knuckleball in Japan.  I don't know where the guy who posted on YouTube got "shake ball."

Interesting
Maybe it's some sort of knuckle variant.
