Bonds Possibly Interested In Seattle...
It's true, sadly...I have the link to prove it, as well as this quote from it:
Briefly: During a 10-minute chat initiated by two Seattle writers, Barry Bonds said he might be interested in playing for the Mariners next year. "If they're looking for a DH, it could be," he said. Bonds also reiterated how serene he is now. "That's probably bad for me because normally when I'm an a -- , I function better," he said. "Right now, I'm having a great time with the guys, enjoying life. I may not be the ballplayer I once was, but I'm a lot happier."

That blurb is at the bottom. He's left-handed sock, but I hate him. I really, really, really, really do not want this to happen.

I dont want him
Would I welcome Bonds? Yes
But the whole discussion and any ensuing discussion of Bonds in a Mariners uniform is completely moot because the FO would never allow it.
Bonds will never be a Mariner. Period.
Yeah it's just my opinion
99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999%
But if it did, while I'd struggle a bit, I wouldn't be entirely upset.
As I mentioned over at USSM, even 50% of Bonds is probably darn near twice the hitter that any of the M's players (in Seattle or otherwise) is, as well as any other player the M's could acquire in the offseason.
Not too mention
I want good players
That's the Thing I Go Back and Forth On...
- I prefer players who aren't total douchebags.
- Our unoffensive team (in more ways than one) isn't doing a whole heck of a lot.
Bond
But the M's attendance is in a freefall right now. Bringing in Bonds would sell a whole lot of tickets. People would by 20-game packages just to see the freak show.
Besides, what are the biggest weaknesses of the current club:
-good lefthanded hitters
-power
-guys who can walk
That is Bonds.
Plus, think of the possibilities. The guy is clearly in decline, but he is still putting up good numbers. Even in his hobbled state, he still has a .970 OPS. Now, his problems are his knee and his elbow. Think about how much better he could be if he didn't have to play in the OF at all. No throwing. No running except on the bases.
He would be like the reincarnation of Edgar, except lefthanded, with a load of baggage, and a shitty attitude.
I like it.
Look at what he would do for our lineup:
Ichiro RF
Beltre 3B
Bonds DH
Sexson 1B
Ibanez LF
Lopez 2B
Johjima C
Reed CF
Betancourt SS
Wow.
Obviously, not the ideal option. I would rather have Travis Hafner or some other awesome lefty bat. But unfortunately, there aren't many of those available right now.
Don't forget Lawton
We're A Team With Too Many Holes...
- Beltre and Sexson to return to something close to their former selves (which I tend to think is possible)
- More power or ridiculously good hitting, from the left or right side (preferably left-handed, young, and Australian)
- Two new starting pitchers
Beltre (might) = Richard Hidalgo
Sexson, either he's gone, or he's just teasing us.

Money matters
So if the M's consider it, I would think that they would really make a push to get good right away. No reason to bring on Bonds unless you are playing to win now. He is not a guy that you would be buidling around.
If the M's decided to really make a push, they could clear money by ditching Everett, Pineiro, Meche, and Guardado. They could then sign one of Daisuke Matsuzaka or Jason Schmidt to add a legit TOR starter. Then, they could resign Moyer and sign Bonds.
The last spot in the rotation would go to a young player from the system. Beyond that, it would be the lineup above, with all the holes in the pen and the bench filled internally. No problems there.
It is possible.
If Moyer resigned for a similar amount that he signed now, plus Bonds signing something like 8 million plus incentives (based on plate appearances), that would leave the M's at least $12 mil to spend on a new starter.
Its definitely possible.
More specific
-trade a prospect or two (perhaps Rob Johnson and Bobby Livingston) to TB for OFer Elijah Dukes
-sign Bonds
-sign one of Matsuzaka or Schmidt
-resign Moyer
-trade Reed in the offseason
Go with this lineup:
Ichiro CF
Beltre 3B
Bonds DH
Sexson 1B
Ibanez LF
Lopez 2B
Johjima C
Dukes RF
Betancourt SS
Rotation: Matsu/Schmidt, Moyer, Felix, Washburn, internal player
I like it.
I can hear it now...
Dave Henderson: "Bonds has struggled over the past few years because he isn't being aggresive enough. You take too many pitches and you lose the ability to be aggresive at the plate."
Will someone please fire Hendu? Could there be a worse announcer ever?
Or Fairly....
No shit Ron. Thanks for that illuminating insider perspective.
