Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

The Pineiro of Old

From:

"As for Puerto Rico starter Joel Pineiro, he was in control from the get-go, pitching like the Pineiro of old. The right-hander stymied the Netherlands' offense by changing speeds and keeping virtually every hitter off balance.

...(Pineiro)finished the night with a respectable line: three hits, two strikeouts and one unearned run in the four-inning, 56-pitch outing."

For the most part he was downright nasty
That curveball was just buckling every hitter it came across. He had a little trouble spotting his fastball in the third, but recovered enough to get out of a bases loaded jam.

He looked good. That coupled with Beltre looking good is certianly a positve sign heading into April.

The Pineiro of Old
Could it happen?  It's not TOTALLY unprecedented, just not very likely.

Yeah
Against Dutch hitters.  Not exactly Murderer's Row.

Let's see him do that to the Dominicans.

I have actually been really bullish
on Piniero this season.  He is a year farther away from injury.  He has had time to regroup from last year and I think he will be able to pull himself together from last year.  He was not consistant and trying to come back from injury last year.  These two problems combined to make a horrible season.  I think he could even have one of his best years of his career this year.  I think he has the potential to surprise alot of people and drastically improve our pitching staff.  I'm throwing it out there but I'm saying he goes and has 6.7K/9IP, an ERA of 3.8, and goes 16-9.
