Super Bowl Diary

Not much of a Seattle rooting party here in Philadelphia and we might as well have a place to post if you're near a computer or stopping by once in awhile.

What a weird feeling this is. A championship game. The Sonics-Bulls didn't feel remotely like this. The  closest to me might be Game 5 of the '95 ALDS.

Off to run errands
Either the fun starts after halftime, or the game's been decided by then.

I notice the Seahawks are doing a much better job early on of moving the football than the Steelers.

2 Big Penalties
go against the Seahawks...  But at least we're up 3-0.  GO SEA HAWKS!

This is feeling exactly like the Carolina game
so far. Seattle completely dominant but making minor mistakes preventing them from a 14-0 lead.

by Matthew on Feb 5, 2006 4:13 PM PST reply actions

Yah...
the Seahawks are so dominant... but they don't got the score to show for it.

Don't be sorry.
Just don't be an ass.  Seriously.  If you were in a room full of Seahawks fans instead of on the Internet your tune would be much different.

So, my advice is:  Behave on the Internet like you would behave in real life and you won't make a total and complete ass of yourself.

You've made a total and complete ass of yourself.  And instead of saying, "My bad" you go and try to tell the people (yes, more than one) that you've pissed off by your banal "smack-talking" that it's their fault for not being able to take it?

Yeah, fuck that buddy.

Actually I was in a room full of Seachicken fans
for most of the day. Most of these posts were made on a friends computer at a Superbowl party, where everybody but me were Seachicken fans. And I recieved just as much greif from them when the Seachickens scored first, when that interception happened near the end zone, and when the Seachickens scored their touchdown. In fact I recieved two text messages on my phone from friends when they scored, asking me how I liked them apples. It's all part of the game.

In fact when I got to work, I went straight into the casino and laughed at a few coworkers and collected my money from bets. They would of done the EXACT same thing to me had I lost and I would of deserved every bit of it.

It's part of the game.

What
is with crappy officiating with every sport this past 12 months?  I know there have been bad calls over the years, but I have never seen the volume of bad, game turning calls that I've seen in 2005 and 2006.

Are leagues trying to fix games these days?  It's not out of the question: officials in English and European soccer are admitting to fixing matches.

And of course the announcers blame the thumb.  How about blaming him for not running through that gaping hole in the D in front of him for the easy 1st down?

The silly explanation
Hasselbeck is allowed to make a tackle low.  But as he did so, he clipped a blocker.  The contact was incidental.  The refs called it a penalty anyway.

The Seahawks got raped on that series.

It's always a fallback to blame the refs
and I hate to use it, but there's two definite things leading to this result.

A) Seattle has not capitialized on MANY opportunities.

B) The calls have decidedly gone the Steelers way.

This is the worst possible outcome, I would rather had a Pittsburgh blowout than a slow choke against the 12th man in black and white.

by Matthew on Feb 5, 2006 6:46 PM PST reply actions

Look at it this way
If Herndon doesn't make that pick in the 3rd quarter, it's probably 28-3 right now, and an embarrassing blowout loss.

Good points.

by Gomez on Feb 5, 2006 6:49 PM PST up reply actions

And if the refs were partial
it would be at least 21-14 Seattle right now. If Stevens wasn't the worst pass catcher in history, if  if if. They're going to lose and that's all anyone outside Seattle will remember, but it should not have been this way. Horrible ending to what has been a horribly officiated season.

by Matthew on Feb 5, 2006 6:58 PM PST up reply actions

Well now
I know about the one touchdown, but who knows with the other plays.  Maybe, maybe not.  Whether or not they got a ton of help, the Steelers are a pretty good football team, and they could have won this game even with things called down the middle.

by Gomez on Feb 5, 2006 7:07 PM PST up reply actions

the non-existant holding call
that cost Seattle the eventual 17-14 lead as well. What should have been 21-14 Seattle turned into 21-10 Steelers because of two terribly tacky flags in a game where Pittsburgh never had a tacky falg thrown on them.

by Matthew on Feb 5, 2006 7:11 PM PST up reply actions

1 Touch down pass taken away
and 1 1st and goal pass taken away.

And there were 2 or 3 other bad calls that affected the momentum of the game.

Aaaah!  I'm depressed...

by MT on Feb 5, 2006 7:16 PM PST up reply actions

Fuck

The Seachickens will not win the Superbowl before the Mariners win a World Series.

Sad how much the officiating affected the outcome
But congrats to Pittsburgh.  They I guess were destined.

by MT on Feb 5, 2006 7:07 PM PST reply actions

It must be awesome
for those Steeler fans who eat, breathe and live Steeler football, and haven't seen a Super Bowl title since Terry Bradshaw.  I mean, people here got behind the Seahawks, but even we have no idea what the Steelers mean to the people of Pittsburgh.  I've know a couple of Pittsburgh natives, and the Steelers are amongst the centers of their respective universes.

Good for them, and congratulations to the Super Bowl XL MVPs: the officiating crew.

Giving credit where credit is due.
Now I don't like the Seachickens(obviously) but I gotta give them props for making it there and having a Franchise best season. They can now say they've been to the big game, something the Mariners unfortunatly can't say.

2005 Seahawks=2001 Mariners in a sense.

Well from my reckoning...
Super Bowl = World Series. The Seahawks have made it to the Super Bowl while the Mariners have never made it to the World Series. Being NFC Champion to me, is superior to being the AL's runner-up but that's just me. Of course being a Vikings fan and a Seahawks fan (I was a Vikes fan prior to 1976) it sounds good but let me tell you being 0-5 in the big game kinda sucks. I'm a loyal fan to my teams though but sometimes I wonder if being a bandwagon jumper wouldn't be the way to go. Here are some numbers:

My teams since I've been a fan
Pittsburgh Pirates 2-2 1.000
Seattle SuperSonics 1-3 .333
Dallas Stars (Minnesota North Stars)1-4 .250
Minnesota Vikings 0-4 .000
Seattle Seahawks 0-1 .000
Seattle Mariners 0-0

Well, if I put it down from a baseball perspective I guess a .300 average isn't too bad. Thanks Goose you made my day. ;)

Vikings...
I hear your pain. I still consider myself a Buffalo Bills fan and this was the first Super Bowl I have brought myself to watch since those "glory" days. I wish I hadn't.

Atleast as a Pirates fan you will always have 1960 -- the greatest underdog victory EVER.

by jtopps on Feb 8, 2006 9:44 AM PST up reply actions

LOL I don't even have 1960...
It was a bit before my time DOB 1965. I do remember Roberto Clemente and the 71 team but alas my favorite player (Clemente) died soon after. As I got older I was amazed that he had been in the league so long. Watching him play, he seemed so young to me. Of course the whole "We are family" thing was great as well and went along well with a Sonics championship. Twenty years later the Stars win the Cup... Argh!
