Rosterbation

With the recent gloom/doom, what sorta rosterbation do we look towards now?

Star-divide

Moves:
Sign 3B Aubrey Huff
Trade 3B Adrian Beltre and RP Julio Mateo to CIN for CF/DH Ken Griffey Jr.
Trade 1B Richie Sexson to BAL for SP Rodrigo Lopez and RP Jim Johnson

C Johjima
1B Ibanez
2B Lopez
3B Huff
SS Betancourt
LF Doyle!
CF Ichiro!
RF Guillen?
DH Griffey

SP1 Felix
2 Washburn
3 Lopez
4 HoRam
5 Woods

then we can begin rebuilding in midseason by trading such people like Ibanez, Ichiro, Washburn and even Griffey

SP - Felix
SP - Washburn
SP - HoRam
SP - Jaret Wright
SP - Woods/Baek
RP - Putz, Huber, Fruto, Woods/Baek, Sherrill, O'Flaherty, Mateo

  • Sign Floyd to a one year $6 million deal
  • Trade Broussard, Feierabend and Cesar Jimenez for Jaret Wright
Prove me wrong Bavasi. Prove me wrong.

Not at all unlikely
Although I think that you would have to switch Ibanez and Floyd.

All of this
Makes me want to drink....watching the M's off season is like putting in a porno and seeing your aunt....it's ugly....it's weird....and it haunts you...

Wait.
That happened to you, too?

Man, I thought I was the only one...

So who is going to host
LL support night?

I'll bring booze and well all get drunk and storm Safeco. (Man that would be a awesome sight. 100 belligerent mariners fans screaming at Safeco.)

Can we
Wave a jolly roger and burn the front office in effigy....?

Pedro, This May Be OK in Mexico, But...
"Burning a likeness of Bill Bavasi and Howard Lincoln is a disgrace to you, to me, and to the entire Evergreen State."
Alvin Davis's number should be retired, so Mike Hargrove can't defile it any longer.

by Doug Taylor on Dec 8, 2006 1:16 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Having resided in the Evergreen State
and been an M's fan since 1978, there is no problem with burning them in effigy....yesterday I was willing to drop the effigy.....but I do agree that AD's number should be retired....while we're at it, can we throw Hargrove on the fire too?

I don't get it
He said we can't hit pinata's that look like people, but in Mexico we do it all the time.

by Rollo Tomasi on Dec 8, 2006 7:30 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Problem with storming Safeco
is that there would be a subsequent press release about fans "Gathering at Safeco to support M's"

Beltre for Griffey?
At this point in his career, I'm not sure Griffey's that much better than Broussard offensively. Then you're plugging a plodding Huff in for Beltre. They would probably be pretty similar offensively, but Huff is pretty awful defensively.
We're doomed!!!

Expanding Rosterbation
I feel that, in light of recent Mariners activity, we need new terms and shades of meaning for various types of rosterbation. For instance:
  1. Rosterbating over what could have been, if Bavasi had acted wisely instead of deciding to administer one giant cockpunch to the fans. "Whatifterbating," perhaps. This could go as far back as the Kevin Mitchell trade, if you wish. Or, counting the # of World Series we'd win in the 1999-2002 years w. Varitek and Lowe and Schmidt.
  2. Rosterbating about negative possibilities, as we are seeing in this thread. A sort of sadomasochistic type of rosterbating. Disrosterbating?
  3. Rosterbating about 2008, and beyond. Futurebating?
  4. Rosterbating over front office changes. Fronterbating?
Any suggestions for names or other categories?

My Plan
Trade Ichiro to LAD for Penny, Elbert, and Andy LaRoche.
Trade Beltre to LAAofA for Lackey (LAA pays all of Beltre's salary)
Trade Sexson to BAL for Hayden Penn
Trade Reed and Penn to FLA for Mike Jacobs
Trade Broussard to PITT for Solomon Torres
Sign Kenny Lofton to a 2/$14 million deal
Sign Julio Zuleta to a two-year deal

Here's the team:

Lofton
Lopez
Ibanez
Guillen
Jacobs
Johjima
Snelling
LaRoche
Betancourt

Rivera
Bloomquist
Zuleta
Morse
Other

Felix
Lackey
Washburn
Penny
HoRam

Mateo
O'Flaherty
Huber
Sherril
Torres
Putz

The plan is to deal both Washburn and Lofton after the season, when their contracts will be rather reasonable. Elbert will take Wash's place, and Adam Jones will be ready to take over for Lofton. Guillen will be gone as well.

The rotation and bullpen (especially if Lowe comes back) will be very good in 2008. Further, although the lineup will take a beating in 2007, we will have the money to pursue Vernon Wells and put him in RF.

Clement may be ready by 2008, making Ibanez expendable as our DH.

Oh, and I'd hire Joe Girardi to manage the team in 2008.

I am sure we'd finish close to last in 2007. That's ok, since we are going to finish last anyway. At least we'd be a contending team in 2008, in my opinion, with a very good young infield (if Jacobs isn't great, we could always upgrade), and an OF of Snelling, Jones, and Wells.

That's my plan for the rest of the offseason.

Pettite signs with Yankees
According to Buster Olney. This probably means that Bavasi will get his wish and get Carl Pavano. It would be nice to get somebody this offseason who isn't coming off an injury plagued season.

Re: Pavano
You know, at this point, if we gave the Yanks a B prospect for Pavano and $10 million, I'd do it.

Better than running Baek out there...

by tait644 on Dec 8, 2006 1:43 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

ah yes...
but when Pavano goes down for the year in May, Baek will be plugged in anyway.

Mark Mulder
The only pitcher with any upside that is still available, IMO, is Mark Mulder.

Given how the market is right now, the M's have TOO MUCH MONEY.  They have to spend that cash, but there aren't any players who they are likely to go after who make any sense.  After the start of this offseason, I am very concerned about what is going to happen next.  I don't want Bavasi to hose his successor with more idiotic moves.

Mark Mulder fits for several reasons:

-he will likely sign for a one-year deal with incentives

-he can help the club with PR.  As a former excellent pitcher, the team can go on and on about how they added the "ace" that they have been looking for.

-he has upside.  If his shoulder heals like his doctors seem to think, the M's would get at least a half season from a good starter.

-with a team option for a second year, it could be a real good move later on.

-the M's could throw $10 million guaranteed at him.  That is $10 million dollars that won't be spent on Barry Zito, Miguel Batista, or Jeff Weaver.

Obviously, the risk is huge.  There is a very real possibility that Mulder won't pitch at all in 2007.  But, on a one year deal, there is zero chance that his contract will hinder the club in 2008, 2009, and 2010.

If it works, great.  If it doesn't....well, the M's are likely to finish in last place anyhow.

by Jerry on Dec 8, 2006 5:00 PM PST   0 recs

Not only is our rotation
worse than last year's, but our bullpen is significantly weaker without Soriano and Lowe.

This is going to be a loooooooooooooong season.
