Bloomquist appreciation thread
I always thought Bloomquist was a great player until I came to sites like this and USSMariner. I alwasy though of him as a poor man's Ryan Freel, Chone Figgins, Mark Derosa, or Michael Cuddeyer, who are all pretty good players I think. Its weird because I would think he would be a fan favorite, not someone who is made fun of all the time. Despite people making fun of what announcers' call grittiness, that word is a good way to describe him. He can play every position except catcher (I believe he said he would be willing to try out catcher as an emergency backup catcher last spring training) and he can play them all adequatley. Sure he's not a great backup, but he allows us to have lefty righty combos like Benuardo (who by the way suck and should be bashed more). If Lopez has to go back home during the season, I feel comfortable letting Willie man the helm at second for a few days, and if Beltre has soreness in his groin, I feel comfortable letting Willie spell him for a few innings a game for a week or so. He's also a pretty good baserunner, and while thats not too important, it's a plus.
Back to the gritty part, he plays hard, and he plays his heart out. He seems to be extremely loyal to the team, and is also a team first type of guy. Willie should be a fan favorite because he doesn't seem to have much more talent then the average fan. He's just a guy getting by on what he has, but willing to do whatever for the team he loves.
There will probably be a lot of posts pointing out how much he sucks, but whatever, every team needs a guy like Willie, and I'm glad we have him until at least 2008. Hopefully he's a Mariner for like like Dan Wilson, Jamie Moyer (excluding the beginning of his career because it never happened and the end because that's not happening right now), Edgar, and Buhner.

Things I like about Willie
- He hasn't ever tried to kill me.
- He's better than Scott Youngbauer.
- He gives the Mariners an excuse not to sign some other crappy utility guy.
- When he fails and makes one of his 175-200 outs, we at least expect it.
- blah blah good AAAA backup and pinch runner who tries hard
- gives the blogosphere an easy target to slam, or else we'd have to focus all our spiteful energy on someone better who probably doesn't deserve it, like Ichiro.

That said, Willie is a huge fan favorite of what I would call the "casual fan" and a lot of the Ms fans from Seattle, but when you get online with all the stat-crunching hardcore baseball guys from across the country who have no interest in the home-town thing, yeah he gets a lot of crap.

And Willie Bloomquist wins the award for...
In all fairness, he is an adequate defender at many positions and he hustles, but none of that matters when he steps into he batters box.
If only baseball had a designated fielder...

Ahh that's a good question.
I'm only 5'7"
That and that was back in 2003. I'm much slower than I was back in high school. I think my record still stands at Lake Washington High... it'd be interesting to see.

well I left out the most critical piece of info
I'm more of a baseball player, played a lot of shortstop and pitcher back then. Had a decent fastball, pretty good curve, and was trying to work on a changeup with a guy named Jim Jackson, he's a scout for the Florida Marlins. Ended up being the reason my friend Nick Hundley was drafted back in 2001.
After hearing people talk down on me because of my size, I kind of gave in and gave up the dream. I wish I hadn't, but due to my weakened ankles, I figured it was a sign.
I'd like to get back into sports though, I still have my speed for the most part, but my agility and strength are far below what they were back 2 years ago.

heh, you should have tried to play in Japan
Though, to be fair, Bobby Valentine is only like 5'9 and many of his Japanese players tower over him :)

That would be awesome.
Hearing thoughts like that definately gets my mind motoring... I'd love to be able to pitch again. If I were to get into shape and play, I'd have to be a pitcher. Don't get me wrong, I love shortstop, but I'm not great with a bat.
Is it just me or is it weird that I can hit for better contact lefthanded, when I'm a righthanded? Well I guess its not all that weird, it makes sense. When I was batting right handed, I tried to hit the hell out of the ball just to keep up with the big boys, which typically had me undercutting the ball. Lefthanded, I focused more, wasn't trying to do much with the ball, and just poked it through.
I think I need to find a decent trainer.

It means I have to work a lot harder than most.
I'm sure that overseas, there's a few pitchers that profile me.
If pitching isn't the route, I think I'd be a WFB type, adequate at most positions, great on the basepaths, but less than average with the bat.

Here's to you, Willie
As for his laments about playing time, well, yeah, he's probably misjudged his own ability level. But we deem a form of arrogance/cockiness/confidence well-nigh essential in players we like - we just hate it in other players. Part of it is the disconnect between his performance and his demands (you'd like to see a bit more self-awareness there; get a couple of doubles before demanding the starting RF job, ferchrissakes), but I think that just adds a surrealistic/comedic flavor that I really enjoy. So thanks for that too, WFB.
And don't hate WFB for getting 250ABs, hate the manager and the front office for that one. It's not just Hargrove, either - I don't know what 'it' is that WFB displays in practice, but he's been the favorite now for years, a status that no amount of futility can undermine. For this too, WFB deserves to be studied, not cruelly mocked.
by marc w on Nov 28, 2006 1:27 PM PST 0 recs
I don't mind WFB IF....
When you give a horrible hitter 250ab's a year and then pay him a million a year, it becomes a fucking joke.
by Grubbie on Nov 28, 2006 1:27 PM PST 0 recs
Sigh.
I think I speak for most Bloomquist-bashers when I say that I think that the problem that I, and that most blogosphereans, have with Bloomquist is not actually with Bloomquist. It's with two things:
- The way he's utilized.
- The disproportionate amount of adoration he gets from the local media and casual fan base.
Hargrove runs him out there as a starter a couple times a week, though, and that, combined with his, shall we say, not-great hitting skills, kills any usefulness he has.
by pdb on Nov 28, 2006 1:28 PM PST 0 recs
My take
He's a decent option to give Lopez or Betancourt a day off. Maybe 5-10 games in the outfield.
If he has tops 150 ABs, fills in for a game every week and a half, pinch runs, and is a defensive replacement in a pinch, he's a fine quality 25th man.
He's overpaid, but not so overpaid that he's going to break the budget or cost us much.
Our bench was horrible last year and he was seen by Hargrove as the best option. It's that simple.

If you're going to celebrate grit and scrappiness
Hardnosed, gritty, stubborn, etc -these describe both Snelling and Bloomquist. Except he's also quite good at baseball.

I'm not a fan of the ignitor
I think most people that read this site are baseball analysts, I want to know how to construct the best possible roster and the minimum price, I want to find unvalued commidities. Bloomquist is the antithesis of that. He gets more money and more playing time than he deserves because he is a 'fan favorite' and a brown-noser. There are hundreds of minor-leaguers that are as good or better than Bloomquist and can be had for nothing more than a more league contract.
I hate Bloomquist because the more playing time he gets the more he hurts my teams chances of winning. On top of that he is a tool. Who ever liked the teacher's pet, the buster, the nark? When I see a Willie Bloomquist fan I see someone who doesn't know much about baseball or a bitch, which one are you?
by Grant H on Nov 28, 2006 3:50 PM PST 0 recs
Fundamentally disagree with you here, my friend
I'm interested in the analytical point of things because it's fun, and because I harbour dreams of being the first English GM, but when I talk here, it's as a Mariner fan first. If Bloomquist came off as more than a boring unclassy stereotype (i.e. had humourous Yoda-related quotes, etc), I'd probably like him. But he's boring -and- bad.

I've never analyzed a baseball in my life
It's round.
It's off-white (at least the one on my desk at work is).
It's got red stitching, some of which is fraying a bit but not enough to threaten the integrity of the ball.
It's got some logos, including the MLB logo and the manufacturer's logo.
Willie Bloomquist can't hit it.
How'd I do?
