Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

Winning bid for Igawa 25 Mil.

It's up over on rotoworld's player news via SI.  No word yet on who the winning team is, but we'll probably know by the end of the day.  I have to think it could be the Mariners, but I'll put my money on the Cubs, Hendry is a dumbass and I don't think he would hestitate to overpay like that.  If it is the M's it may not be too bad if the posting fee isn't counted against the budget and we can sign him to a reasonable contract.  It's definitely not the A's or Padres as they both bid, but have been quoted as bidding much lower than 25 Mil.

If things keep going like this
Kansas City will be ruling baseball in a few years. Those drafts that let you have cheap talent? So much more valuable now that free agency has gone mental.

If that figure is true
Igawa goes from one of the best bargains/risks to one of the biggest possible FA busts.

by Trent on Nov 28, 2006 12:19 PM PST reply actions

The Biggest Possible FA Bust Is:
Jeff Suppan. If he goes back to the AL, . . . wow, it's not going to look pretty.

I thought Kei Igawa was an Iron Chef?

Hmm
Japanese press claims the team name and bid will be announced at 10am Wednesday their time, which is 5pm today in Seattle.  Dunno if I believe that.

WFAN Reports Yanks winning bid
$25 million for a 4th/5th starter. Nice.

by slipereypete on Nov 28, 2006 2:43 PM PST reply actions

I tihnk he'll be a serviceable #3
But $25M should be the -total- price, not the posting price.

Eeesh.

by Graham MacAree on Nov 28, 2006 3:20 PM PST up reply actions

I guess I am confused...
Everyone was for the M's getting him, even at that price, as long as it doesn't go toward this year's salary.  However, when any one else is the one holding the very same bag, it is like "ha, you got screwed".  Doesn't matter who or what the situation is.

Why is that?  That really doesn't make sense to me -- seems hypocritical.  If the M's lost out, who cares.  If the M's got him, yeah for them.  If the crippled children's hospital put in the highest, hope it works out.  If they lost out, who cares.

I wasn't too into Igawa FWIW
And yes, I believe $25 mil is a high posting fee.

by Gomez on Nov 28, 2006 3:38 PM PST up reply actions

What? No
We were going for him on the assumption that he'd come cheap and therefore had the potential to be a bargain. $10M posting price? Fair enough. But $25M? Stupid. I'm sure you can see where we're coming from.

Personally I think that the emergency posting fund is imaginary anyway.

Let's look through the quotes on this thread and their fundamental points:

Graham:      Baseball is going insane
Trent:       So much for him being a bargain, at that money he's really risky!
JJJS:        Not as risky as... Jeff Suppan!
JJJS:        He'll go to the Cubs
Emerald:     How 'bout the Yanks?
Gomez:       Or the Rolling Stones?
Vernitis:    TV show reference?
Deanna:      Time for the announcement announced, author notes her skepticism
Rjlaws:      That's really freaking expensive
Slipereypete:Hey, sounds like the Yanks won. $25M+ for a 4/5 is a lot.
Gomez:       Yeah, he'll be like Ishii
Graham:      Wait, he's better than that. But still to expensive
You:         You guys are being hypocritical

There you have it. Possibly two posts are saying he won't do well in the majors. The rest of the relevant ones are saying that he's going to cost to much and therefore no longer going to be low risk/decent reward.

Please reread the oringal post...
then reread my post, then read several of the other threads when the bidding on any of the Japanese players -- then maybe you just might get my drift.

I wasn't going off the main jist of each point.  I was simply stating facts about several posts over several threads.  Again, if you think what you stated about my post is the main jist, then that is your opinion.  I don't think that is the main jist -- just a statement.

It's pretty funny.
Everyone drools over Japanese players... until they go somewhere else or aren't as cheap as we thought.

Point taken about the original post,
However, who here has changed their tune on a Japanese player's ability just because they went somewhere else? We think they're the same pitchers, they're just going for 200% what they're worth.

Also, I owe you an apology
I shouldn't jump down your throat over such trivial things. Sorry.

by Graham MacAree on Nov 29, 2006 12:17 AM PST up reply actions

Thanks for the apology
but there wasn't one needed.  You stated your opinion, nothing wrong with that.  I think you just misinterpreted my meaning a little.

And on everyone going for 200% of their worth, I agree with you, totally.  Everything has changed ever since Jordan got a nuts contract from the Bulls in the early 90's.  It really has been crazy ever since.  Some years, just insane.

Sure, I think my bro is worth more than $350K/year, but that is me, family.  I would hope to see him sign a big deal, like Walker got this year, at some point down the road.  Maybe, just maybe -- someday.

by ppl4life on Nov 29, 2006 10:19 AM PST up reply actions

Your brother definitely -is-
Worth more than $350K, talent/production wise. But what players are worth aren't really what they're paid anymore - good teams hoard undervalued players (i.e. close to the whole M's bullpen) and shun players who are going to be paid more. Of course, I don't have the personal involvement that you do, but I see everything in baseball (when I'm in my faux-GM mode, anyway) as trying to minimise cost for production, so you need to be underpaying players.

by Graham MacAree on Nov 29, 2006 10:49 AM PST up reply actions

Not exactly
Give him to me for $6-8m posting and $6m per year and I'd do it, given the need for a starter.

Really though, he may not even end up being worth that.
