Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

Estrada to Milwaukee

Link

I'm not sure what to think of this. It looks like it's better for the Brewers since they give two guys who haven't proven anything in the majors and a pitcher who is basically as good as the one they get back for a decent catcher and a decent reliever.

I wonder what we would've had to give for either Davis or Vargas.

LOL
2nd catcher in the last 2 years that MIL took from ARZ.  IIRC they got Damian Miller to catch for them last season, and I'm guessing Miller will accept a reduced role as he exercised his 2007 option.

Milwaukee received former All-Star catcher Johnny Estrada, right-handed starter Claudio Vargas and right-handed reliever Greg Aquino for steady left-handed starter Doug Davis and a pair of prospects, lefty Dana Eveland and outfielder David Krynzel.

Estrada's become a hacker but can hit for some power.  The purpose of the trade is clear in this quote:

Estrada was acquired by the Diamondbacks in a trade with Atlanta a year ago. Despite his success at the plate, Estrada was unhappy in Arizona and made it clear late in the season he would prefer to move on.

Davis has a serious walk problem (he hit triple digit BB's last season, averaging around 4 BB/9) to go with his K prowess, but even with that, he's an improvement over what was dropped.  Vargas is just trash who might be mediocre in his prime, and Aquino has a gopher problem, making him mop-up fodder at best (30-35 IP each of the least three seasons because of this).  And then of course, getting prospects never hurts, so bully for the D-Backs.  I'd have to say I wonder what the hell the Brewers were thinking.  Sure, you just got yourself a good hitting catcher, but at what cost?

Pitching wise, this is a huge upgrade for the D-Back staff, which already has Brandon Webb and Livan Livan Likes His Innings, and got a couple of prospects to boot.  They managed to unload a disgruntled regular and net a great return.

you recall incorrectly
Miller signed as a FA in 05 after playing for OAK. The last catcher the Brewers 'stole' from the D-Backs was Chad Moeller.

Stand corrected on Miller
but I stand by the rest of the comment.

yes
The Diamondbacks fleeced the Brewers.  Not sure why teh Brewers need two good catchers, I hope Miller gets traded. But they have the best backup catcher in baseball right now (until Gregg Zaun is signed)

My hope is that the D'Backs are maybe now shopping Livan...he'd be  decent fit with the M's and is coming off a down season.

Not sure about that
I would think Vargas for D.Davis was their move to upgrade their rotation.  Trading away one of their SPs afterward would defeat that purpose.

Well I guess this shows us
that there are SP availible through the trade market.  I wouldn't have minded Davis.
