Dear God please!
I need the Hawks to win. Beyond the obvious reasons, it'll keep me distracted for two more weeks, brining us much closer to Spring Break -> March Madness -> Opening Day.

GO STEELERS!
Oh, um, go Seahawks too!  I'd love a Seahawks-Steelers Super Bowl -- I'd pretty much know exactly how far from a television every friend of mine is regardless of which side of the country they're on.

Somewhere on the internet: an accurate prediction
I saw a post on a message board where, in hindsight, the guy correctly predicted the winner of every game to this point, including the AFC title game if the Steelers' lead holds up.  Impressive.  The post was on 1-3-06 and has not been edited.

He has predicted not just a Seahawks' win over Carolina, but a Seahawks Super Bowl championship victory.  And he's no homer: guy's from LA.

I still have 1984 fresh in memory...
Let us hope that 2006 gives us a SuperBowl experience...  I'm so freaking nervous!

by manyoso on Jan 22, 2006 3:13 PM PST reply actions

Some positive differences between 84 and today
  • The Raiders had Marcus Allen.  The Panthers have a third-string RB named Nick Goings.
  • We played that 84 game on the road in the cavernous L.A. Memorial Coliseum.  This game will be played at home in Seahawks Stadium (fuck you, Qwest).
  • We also play home games outdoors, on grass.  The 84 Seahawks played in the Kingdome and dome teams notoriously struggle on the road, and move more slowly on grass.  Today's Seahawks need not make such an adjustment.
  • The Seahawks played rather well in 84 but the team was by no means formidable.  Name five memorable Seahawks from that period, not including Steve Largent.  This year's squad is probably the best all-around, deepest squad we've ever had.  Seriously, we started 3rd, 4th and 5th string WR's a good portion of the year and still moved the ball reasonably well.

And Carolina sure doesn't seem like the team we saw last week against the Bears...  but it is early so I resolve not to get cocky and to knock on some wood!!!

Wait
SENECA WALLACE WITH A BIG CATCH?!

Hooray for game planned wrinkles in the 1st quarter!

by Gomez on Jan 22, 2006 4:11 PM PST reply actions

Still waiting for Smith
Either the Seahawks are doing a great job of covering him, or the Panthers are trying to prove - unsuccessfully - that they can move the ball without him.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jan 22, 2006 4:11 PM PST reply actions

By my count
Smith was quadruple-teamed on that interception.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jan 22, 2006 4:15 PM PST reply actions

Whoa
The Seahawks are not screwing around.

The Mariners should watch the Seahawks today and take note of their attitude and approach.

by Gomez on Jan 22, 2006 4:16 PM PST reply actions

Must be windy.
Because they're not getting much distance on the kickoffs.

by Goose on Jan 22, 2006 4:47 PM PST reply actions

I hate these fucking refs!
They called the hawks early in the game for a block in the back JUST LIKE THAT!!!

And then they didn't call that obvious facemask and collar.

They are trying to put Carolina back into the game.

by manyoso on Jan 22, 2006 4:48 PM PST reply actions

Forget it.
Apparently, when you block a guy in the back, it's not a block in the back.

I shouldn't be able to go from ecstatic to nervous that quickly.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jan 22, 2006 4:52 PM PST up reply actions

When they throw the flag and conference for minute
and then the guy is about to announce the block and then they decide to conference again and call it off?  Especially when the refs called the exact same block in the back earlier in the game against the Seahawks?  Hell yah, I can complain about the refs.

by manyoso on Jan 22, 2006 4:53 PM PST up reply actions

Someone has to control these refs...
They've simply been awful in the playoffs.

by MT on Jan 22, 2006 4:53 PM PST reply actions

Hasselbeck's development
You can really see it on those plays where he has to scramble out of the pocket. He doesn't make nearly as many awful desperation throws as he used to (last week's instance notwithstanding).

by Jeff Sullivan on Jan 22, 2006 4:56 PM PST reply actions

The NFL Refs
have gotten so bad they've descended to NBA ref territory.

by Matthew on Jan 22, 2006 5:16 PM PST reply actions

Carolina's halftime speech:
"We played pretty much the worst half imagineable, and we're still only down 13."

Which is unsettling, but if you're the Seahawks, you have to be feeling good that you're one bullshit punt return TD away from pitching a 20-0 shutout. If they keep up the energy, they're going to run away with this one.

Thank God we get the ball to start the second half.

It looks good but
I don't want to jinx....I had throtled down my seahawk enthusiasm for many years until this year when i slowly throtled up.
Ketchikan

by Ketchikan on Jan 22, 2006 5:27 PM PST reply actions

Yeah
as worried as I am about how close the score is; the seattle O is rolling up the yards and the carolina O is completely one-dimensional and as long as they keep taking Smith out of the game, I don't see anyway they get back into this game. The Seattle front four is getting a ton of pressure w/o help so they can keep 7 in pass D.

Halftime keys:
-Take care of the ball. The only way Seattle loses at this point is if they beat themselves.
-Keep mixing up the defense packages.

by Matthew on Jan 22, 2006 5:29 PM PST reply actions

I'm also really upset
that none of the supposed "analysts" have brought up that Seattle got ringed for that block in the back but Carolina gets a free pass.

by Matthew on Jan 22, 2006 5:30 PM PST reply actions

At least
The Seahawks are looking very dominant on both sides of the ball, even with the bullcrap non-call on the Steve Smith TD.  Last week they had a real struggle against Washington's D.

by Gomez on Jan 22, 2006 5:32 PM PST reply actions

Good start...
Points on this drive would do well to calm me down.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jan 22, 2006 5:35 PM PST reply actions

Nice Seahawks drive here
Which means 20 yards away from the endzone we get a penalty to kill our momentum.

by JLC on Jan 22, 2006 6:08 PM PST reply actions

That is annoying
ABC did the same thing for Reggie Bush at the Rose Bowl.  It's like they're saying, "This player is more important than the others (who do the blocking, throw said player the ball, etc.)."

by Gomez on Jan 22, 2006 6:10 PM PST up reply actions

Re: That is annoying
They should draw a circle around Delhomme, and then another showing on which part of the turf he's going to be laying a few seconds later.

The big secret:
They guess.  But don't tell anybody.

Reasons why Carolina lost, by ESPN
  1. They didn't have DeShaun Foster.
  2. Steve Smith had a bad day.
  3. The rain was in their eyes.
  4. They were sleepy.
  5. Hawks can fly while Panthers are merely ground animals. It's just not fair.

6.  The Seahawks kicked the crap out of them in every aspect.

81 points....
2 assists.

On the other hand, he did almost get halfway to his season average of 4.4 apg.

He literally is a one-man team. Too bad the other teams he plays against get 5 players otherwise he'd never lose.

by Matthew on Jan 22, 2006 10:46 PM PST up reply actions

His ballhoggedness
and ego cost the Lakers the services of Shaq, who was so pissed about it that he signed with Miami despite loving L.A. as a city.

Still, 81 points... damn.  If he can get over the fact that he is not Jordan and he can't win games all by himself, and be a team player, maybe the Lakers can win one without Shaq.

by Gomez on Jan 22, 2006 11:34 PM PST up reply actions

by Matthew on Jan 22, 2006 10:32 PM PST up reply actions

To be fair
he was in an incredible zone, 60% shooting? Plus 53% from the field and 18-20 free throws. That's hot for basketball, and given how much the rest of his team sucks if he's that hot I say let him take 40 shots.

Now if he wasn't that hot he needs to be helping other people out.

by bluemax on Jan 23, 2006 2:04 PM PST up reply actions

Plus
his team is garbage.  If you are the coach of the Lakers, you get him to shoot the ball as much as possible.  Who do you want him to give it to?
