Around SBN: Devils Beat Rangers, Head To Stanley Cup Finals

7/7: Open Game Thread

First Pitch: 7:05pm PDT

SEATTLE MARINERS            ANAHEIM ANGELS

Ichiro RF                   Figgins CF
Winn LF                     Erstad 1B
Ibanez DH                   Guerrero RF
Sexson 1B                   Anderson LF
Beltre 3B                   Molina C
Reed CF                     Izturis SS
Bloomquist SS               McPherson 3B
Lopez 2B                    Rivera DH
Olivo C                     Kennedy 2B

----------                  ----------

Pineiro (2-4, 5.79)         Colon (11-4, 3.06)

According to VORP, Bartolo Colon has been the 13th-best pitcher in baseball this year, a certifiable ace who seems to have rebounded quite nicely from a rough 2004 campaign. As a guy who throws strikes and gets deep into games, Colon is precisely the type of pitcher who gives the Mariners a lot of problems, but not all hope is lost - he's had his trouble with Ibanez, Ichiro, and Beltre in the past. It won't mean anything if Joel gets bombed early, though, so the first few innings will be critical.

Oh, and I hate the Angels.

LET'S GO MARINERS!

What are the odds
that we get swept in this series?

I'd say 70%

by Goose on Jul 7, 2005 4:56 PM PDT reply actions

Well, more like...
0.5%

Unless Pineiro finds a way to implode.  I like our chances so far, though...

Garret Anderson
One of those players who's been labeled as underrated so often that he's overrated.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 7, 2005 6:40 PM PDT reply actions

Olivo with a start
I thought we'd never see that again.

by bluemax on Jul 7, 2005 7:03 PM PDT reply actions

I hate Rex Hudler
Cotton McKnight and Pepper Brooks would be a better broadcasting team for the Angels than Physioc and Hudler.

Cotton McKnight: I'm being told that Average Joe's does not have enough players and will be forfeiting the championship match.
Pepper Brooks: It's a bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off for 'em.

Cotton McKnight: In 23 years of broadcasting I thought I'd seen it all, folks. But it looks like Peter La Fleur has actually blindfolded himself.
Pepper Brooks: He will not be able to see very well, Cotton.

[after sudden death is announced]
Pepper Brooks: Pepper needs new shorts, Cotton!
Cotton McKnight: Right you are, Pep.

Sexson just got a hit
But why, when Beltre is seemingly hot, is he in cleanup and Beltre is 5th...Again..?

by BlueBaron on Jul 7, 2005 7:13 PM PDT reply actions

It'd be nice...
if Beltre popped one here, because the only good Angels fan is a quiet Angels fan.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 7, 2005 7:14 PM PDT reply actions

A walk is fine.
Nice job laying off that one - you KNEW he wanted to offer.

Laying off his signature strike out pitch.  Good to see.

by bluemax on Jul 7, 2005 7:19 PM PDT reply actions

Are these our Mariners
Or did they get some clones and teach them how to play baseball?

by BlueBaron on Jul 7, 2005 7:19 PM PDT reply actions

Haha.
Everything about Anaheim sucks. Woohoo!

Olivio
Actually got down the line on that shot up the middle. First glance he looked safe but it was real close.

by phil333 on Jul 7, 2005 7:30 PM PDT reply actions

Colon can't find the strike zone
HA HA!

bases loaded for Beltre

that will probably be hte only time you hear Sexson and infield hit in the same sentence.

by Goose on Jul 7, 2005 7:37 PM PDT reply actions

Colon is imploding
And here comes the hot hitting Beltre.  Interesting.

by BeltredNOT on Jul 7, 2005 7:37 PM PDT reply actions

Woohoo!
Time for Beltre to drill one somewhere and end this one early.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 7, 2005 7:37 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah baby
Saw a good first pitch and drove it like our big player should.

by phil333 on Jul 7, 2005 7:39 PM PDT up reply actions

BELTRE!
YES! That's what we paid for!

Calling Mr.Beltre
The service desk says you may now pickup your check.

Lopez needs a few more of those to make up for yesterday's Boone like performance.

Mariner Fans
Really needed a game where we scored in bunches for a change.  And, from the first inning.  It's way past due.

by BeltredNOT on Jul 7, 2005 7:44 PM PDT reply actions

Is it too late
for us to get some new commercials?

by bluemax on Jul 7, 2005 7:51 PM PDT reply actions

This game feels so so good.
I can't really put in words how awesome this is.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 7, 2005 7:51 PM PDT reply actions

Tell me about it
Ichiro turning back into Ichiro

Beltre turing back into Beltre

Lopez up

Snelling up

If you forget about the wins and losses, its a good day to be a Mariner fan.

Bingo.
"If you forget about the wins and losses"

by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 7, 2005 7:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Man...
Sexson has had some real communication problems this year. That needs to end before something terrible happens.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 7, 2005 7:54 PM PDT reply actions

Yikes
that was a bad play

Sexson should of at least of knocked Lopez down and caught the ball.

by Goose on Jul 7, 2005 7:54 PM PDT reply actions

Jered Weaver
Being interviewed in the Angels' broadcast booth. Sounds like a pretty sharp guy, especially when you put him with Hudler and Physioc. Color me impressed.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 7, 2005 8:03 PM PDT reply actions

Boom Boom.
You can't keep that guy off the bases.

MVP.  MVP.  MVP.

by ryanhealy on Jul 7, 2005 8:20 PM PDT reply actions

Miguel Olivo's maturity
Shook that one off and walked back to the dugout. Not a big deal, but still nice to see, considering he was tossed the last time he argued balls and strikes.

Vlad
0-3 with 2 GIDP and an error.

Wow

first error all year.  Damn.

Winn and HR
both in the same sentence.

A memo to Estaban Yan
Striking out Jose Lopez and Miguel Olivo does not mean that you are capable of blowing the ball past Ichiro. Thank you.

Another note: Try to avoid the Randy Winn homer. It's just embarassing for your team.

by Graham MacAree on Jul 7, 2005 9:10 PM PDT reply actions

Just got home from the local watering hole
where I was watching the game with wsome Angel fans and see that Winn hit a HR. Suck it Angel fans. My observations:

~Who is this man on the mound? Pineiro is pitching like a man possessed tonight, which is awesome to see.
~Beltre and Reed!
~Bloomy!? (mixed feelings on this hot streak)
~Izturis is a solid SS.
~Lopez flashed some leather tonight which is reassuring.

But one comment. Why in the world are they allowing Pineiro take the mound in the eighth? Pineiro is throwing well, he obviously started to struggle and developed an injury due to at least some over use. I would have never let him take the mound. Stupid decision.

by Trent on Jul 7, 2005 9:15 PM PDT reply actions

Correction
he obviously struggled *in the past and currently.

by Trent on Jul 7, 2005 9:17 PM PDT up reply actions

You have got to be kidding me?
WTF are these guys thinking? Stupid. Stuipid. Stupid.

by Trent on Jul 7, 2005 9:24 PM PDT reply actions

Mac
Y'all went an entire Esteban Yan appearance without mentioning Yan/McLemore?  I can't let that slide.  If Mac is with an ESPN crew doing an Angel game later this eyar, I want to see him bust out of the booth and charge the mound.

by wackomann on Jul 7, 2005 9:24 PM PDT reply actions

Uhhh...
Joel's out there why, exactly?

by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 7, 2005 9:24 PM PDT reply actions

Re: Uhhh...
Should've been pulled after 7. No reason to risk injury and over use. We aren't playing for '05 and we need him healthy in '06.

by Trent on Jul 7, 2005 9:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Pinniero
Because Ms obviously think he isn't injured, whereas all signs say the opposite.

by sergey on Jul 7, 2005 9:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Re: Uhhh...
We only have 7 relievers. The bullpen needs the rest.

by Aaron @ Lookout Landing on Jul 7, 2005 9:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Come on Joel
Hurry up and finish this.

This is the most fun I've had watching a Mariners game in a while.

HAHA Angels.
