Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

7/19: Open Game Thread

First Pitch: 4:07pm PDT

SEATTLE MARINERS            TORONTO BLUE JAYS

Ichiro RF                   Adams SS
Winn LF                     Catalanotto LF
Ibanez DH                   Wells CF
Sexson 1B                   Hillenbrand 3B
Beltre 3B                   Hill DH
Morse SS                    Zaun C
Reed CF                     Rios RF
Lopez 2B                    Hinske 1B
Borders C                   Hudson 2B

----------                  ----------

Sele (6-9, 4.77)            Lilly (7-9, 5.21)

Two pitchers headed in opposite directions. While Sele has been various shades of ugly over the past few weeks, Lilly has caught fire, allowing nine runs in his last 38 innings (six starts), with nearly a strikeout per frame and having lowered his ERA from 7.41 to 5.21 over that span. He's beginning to look like the strong #2 pitcher many analysts thought he'd be this year, which bodes poorly for Seattle's chances this afternoon. Lilly can still be betrayed by his command and exposed against righties, though, so at least there's a little hope. It'd be nice if Miguel Olivo kept up his current pace against the guy, just for a little added boost. Sele needs to not suck, which might be asking too much.

LET'S GO MARINERS!

Harlem shuffle
If the Ms were the Harlem Globetrotters, everyone would go to the plate against Lilly wearing an Olivo mask. But they aren't, so I'm hoping that Sexson, Ibanez and Beltre can take advantage of that relatively short, no-power-alley CF porch.

How is that possible?
If there is one guy Miguel Olivo should start against it's Ted Lilly. 3 HRS in 5 at bats! Wow.

The M's are holding off on a deal until after the game, thus allowing Winn to play vs. a lefty.

Interesting
The Red Sox released Embry today...

I know they have had bullpen troubles of late, but that seems like a little bit of an overreaction to the losses to the Yankees and D-Rays of late...

Have any of you EVER seen a call get reversed like the one in that game?

LOL
They were talking about this on ESPN radio and how the ump was yelling at Lou after he came out to argue...the gist of it was, "what do you expect to happen when you yell back at him...Lou to calm down?"

The host suggested that when they changed that call they should have just tossed Lou at that point because it was inevitable...

Rumors are easy to find. Legitimate trade news is hard to find and there are just some quiet murmurs out there today.

Nice
Hey Jeff -

I live in Tucson right now...went to watch Tacoma last week and saw Lorraine implode.  Anyway, I was wondering if you knew anything about a guy in the D-Backs organization named Connor Jackson? Dude had huge stats at the few games i've attended and seemed to be a very good hitter.  Is he a AAAA guy or legit prospect?

by Brian2412 on Jul 19, 2005 4:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Re: Nice
Conor Jackson is a terrific prospect, and the guy Arizona took with the pick we gave them when we signed Greg Colbrunn.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 19, 2005 4:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Thanks
He looks fantastic...power, line drive stroke...the works.

by Brian2412 on Jul 19, 2005 4:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Conor Jackson
That name should be labeled as blasphamy. Conor Jackson is a tremendous prospect. He is a tremendous prospect that the D-Backs drafted with our draft pick as compensation for the signing of Greg Colbrunn. He has a ton of ability at the plate and his power is just starting to develop. He's also developing into a pretty damn good 1B.

by Trent on Jul 19, 2005 4:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Jackson's AAA numbers this year
62 walks, 27 strikeouts.

(And his other numbers are also great.)

by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 19, 2005 4:57 PM PDT up reply actions

OK
I've only been to about 7 games, but dude always crushes the ball.  Too bad...Colbrun! Ugh!

by Brian2412 on Jul 19, 2005 4:58 PM PDT up reply actions

This is one of the many examples
I use as to why Gillick was a mediocre GM. Colbrunn was a good idea, but giving up a first-round talent for him, no way in hell.

Brian- Tucson actually has two of the best prospects in baseball in Jackson and Carlos Quentin. Quentin is actually one of the best prospects in the game and you should be thankful you get to see them both on a regular basis.

Sergio Santos isn't half bad himself.

by Trent on Jul 19, 2005 5:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Mediocre is too harsh
and down right lousy isn't fair. Average GM is a much better assessment.

by Trent on Jul 19, 2005 5:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Man, you can't expect the guy to just rake. He's getting MLB at bats. He's performed and gotten better at every level of the minors.

Chatting with a sense of playfulness Tuesday, Piniella said he threw his hat while he argued, but didn't get to kick it.

"Somebody stole my prop," Piniella said with a chuckle. "You've got to have a little fun."

Piniella expects to be fined by Major League Baseball's disciplinarian, Bob Watson, a former teammate of Piniella's.

"Bob's a good guy," said Piniella, still smiling. "I like Bob. [But] he likes to fine me for whatever reason. Maybe I didn't buy him enough dinners [when they were teammates]."

Thornton - "and I feel a, a, I just fell. No more questions."
