4/17: Open Game Thread

Because baseball is meant to be played on Sunday afternoons.

First pitch: 3:05pm EDT
SEATTLE MARINERS CHICAGO WHITE SOX

Ichiro RF Perez LF
Reed CF Iguchi 2B
Beltre 3B Everett DH
Ibanez DH Konerko 1B
Boone 2B Dye RF
Winn LF Rowand CF
Dobbs 1B Pierzynski C
Olivo C Crede 3B
Valdez SS Uribe SS
---------- ----------
Meche? (0-0, 7.88) Garcia (1-0, 1.93)

Gil Meche puts his ominous right elbow up against one of the more frustratingly inconsistent pitchers the Mariners have ever seen. For Meche, the key will be keeping his pitch count down, a task which should be made easier by Chicago's aggressive approach at the plate. For the hitters, they'll need to pay close attention to how Garcia throws in the first, because his command of his curveball usually determines how well he'll pitch in any given game. If there is any justice in the world, Scott Spiezio won't leave the dugout all day.

LET'S GO MARINERS!

wake up?
I've been up since 6.  I've already been to the coffee place, the store, and washed my car.  Now I get to twiddle my thumbs for a half hour till the D-Backs/Nationals game comes on.

I hate Arizona.

by ryanhealy on Apr 17, 2005 9:45 AM PDT up reply actions

Re: wake up?
It's not Arizona's fault you got up at 6.

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 17, 2005 9:58 AM PDT up reply actions

Just an observation
Of today's starting lineup, only 4 were on the big club when Freddy was traded, and three were White Sox when Freddy was traded. Kind of odd.

by Corco on Apr 17, 2005 11:07 AM PDT up reply actions

Greg Dobbs
better start at 1st today.

I can't believe I just said that.

by Corco on Apr 17, 2005 10:17 AM PDT reply actions

Nah.
Put Ibanez at 1b and hope Sexson is feeling well enough to DH.

by ryanhealy on Apr 17, 2005 10:19 AM PDT up reply actions

That won't happen
The Times says he's out today too, may be available fo PH duty.

by Corco on Apr 17, 2005 10:23 AM PDT up reply actions

Re: That won't happen
Mike Hargrove was a pretty good hitter in his day.

Hmmm...

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 17, 2005 10:24 AM PDT up reply actions

Hargrove?
Activate Don Baylor dammit!

by Corco on Apr 17, 2005 10:26 AM PDT up reply actions

Re: Hargrove?
Baylor had a much worse OBP.

Besides, Hargrove is four months younger.

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 17, 2005 10:39 AM PDT up reply actions

Good point...
And with Hargrove having played in the AL Central for much of his career, he is much more familiar with the hitters.

by Corco on Apr 17, 2005 10:58 AM PDT up reply actions

WOOT!
Dobbs IS starting at 1st!

by Corco on Apr 17, 2005 11:04 AM PDT up reply actions

Re: WOOT!
It's off to the glue factory for Spiezio.

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 17, 2005 11:08 AM PDT up reply actions

Take it for what it's worth
but DMZ reported that Meche had his anti-inflammatory dosage and will see how he does in his pre-game warm-ups.

We might see a Ron Villone emergency start today.

by Trent on Apr 17, 2005 11:10 AM PDT reply actions

Re: Take it for what it's worth
How pleasant.

It's been nice knowing you, Gil.

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 17, 2005 11:12 AM PDT up reply actions

Re: Take it for its worth
*it should read that Gil had his anti-inflammatory dosage increased.

by Trent on Apr 17, 2005 11:17 AM PDT up reply actions

What are our options
if that happens and Meche is out for a while?

Campillo? Baek? Trade?

I can't see Villone in the rotation all year.

by Corco on Apr 17, 2005 11:17 AM PDT up reply actions

Re: What are our options
Campillo, Baek, and - before long - King Felix.

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 17, 2005 11:19 AM PDT up reply actions

Campillo...
Is he on the 40 man roster?

If not, we'll probably see Baek.

by Cy Meche on Apr 17, 2005 11:19 AM PDT reply actions

Good.
I guess the good news is that both will add another starter that doesn't beat himself with walks.

Campillo seems to miss a few more bats though.

by Cy Meche on Apr 17, 2005 11:22 AM PDT up reply actions

Re: Good
Of course we could use Thornton in that role. That would be fun.

Sort of like sticking a fork in a socket fun.

by Trent on Apr 17, 2005 11:24 AM PDT up reply actions

Re: Good.
Campillo had underwhelming strikeout rates in Mexico, so it's going to take a few more starts like his last one to convince me that he's learned how to miss bats more often.

I like him better than Baek, though, if only because he doesn't give up many homers.

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 17, 2005 11:24 AM PDT up reply actions

Re: Campillo
He is on the 40 man. It would probably be a toss up between Baek and Campillo.

the Yankees losing while it lasts.

by Cy Meche on Apr 17, 2005 11:23 AM PDT up reply actions

The Cleveland/Minnesota game
C.C. Sabathia just coughed up a base hit to Matt LeCroy and dropped a nice 5-6 second profanity laced shout fest, caught on the live feed.

Announcers comment, "C.C. appears to be a bit upset after that base hit."

by Trent on Apr 17, 2005 11:23 AM PDT reply actions

When do we play the Yanks?
Is it wrong to say that I'm looking forward to it?  What, with how they're struggling and all?  6-0 BAL in the third.

by manyoso on Apr 17, 2005 11:32 AM PDT reply actions

Re: When do we play the Yanks?
May 9-11, 16-18.

I look forward to seeing Beltre and Sexson tee off on their pitching, but I'm afraid that their lineup will do the same thing to ours.

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 17, 2005 11:36 AM PDT up reply actions

Beltre
I'd like to see Beltre launch on anyone.

by phil333 on Apr 17, 2005 11:57 AM PDT up reply actions

Dog Day at U.S. Cellular.
I'd be infuriated if I showed up to that.

by Devin on Apr 17, 2005 12:02 PM PDT reply actions

That was fast.
He'll do it all himself again if he has to.

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 17, 2005 12:06 PM PDT reply actions

re:
It's scary that he might have to.

by BrianV on Apr 17, 2005 12:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Nice start, Freddy.
This is where he begins cursing himself and fails to get another out.

Until Dobbs.

by Devin on Apr 17, 2005 12:07 PM PDT reply actions

Heh
How are things going Freddy?

by Trent on Apr 17, 2005 12:11 PM PDT reply actions

Op-field for Ibanez.
Too bad Reed was just thrown out.

by Devin on Apr 17, 2005 12:11 PM PDT reply actions

...uh.
...why swing at that?

by Devin on Apr 17, 2005 12:12 PM PDT reply actions

Re: ...uh.
Because Boone never likes to be left out of the rally.

And yes, the hot dog guy needs to shut up.

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 17, 2005 12:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Meche
He looks a little amped up today.  Working quickly and maybe overthrowing a bit.

Then again maybe it's just me.

by BrianV on Apr 17, 2005 12:15 PM PDT reply actions

I love
first inning sacrifice plays.

by Trent on Apr 17, 2005 12:16 PM PDT reply actions

It's a bunting contest!
Guillen's beating Hargrove so far in the series, but don't sell our guy short.

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 17, 2005 12:16 PM PDT reply actions

Warm up the pen.
Meche doesn't seem long for this game.

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 17, 2005 12:20 PM PDT reply actions

WOW
check out the grill on that guy. Geez!

Raining in Tacoma.
Man, if I get out there and it's raining...

Re: Raining in Tacoma.
Howzabout a tripleheader?

Just think about all that Santiago.

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 17, 2005 12:33 PM PDT up reply actions

No thanks.
I'd rather not envision a triple header featuring Ramon Santiago.  Fortunately we've jettisoned Ugueto, too.

I'd be up north right now, were it not for bronchitis that took over my weekend :-(

Hopefully I'll be better by Tuesday, or at least good enough to go see King Felix in his home debut...

So
Is it time yet to concede that Meche will never be the ace so many people thought he'd be?

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 17, 2005 12:51 PM PDT reply actions

Well, yeah.
I think a lot of us conceded that two years ago.

My MLB Gamecast shows Meche is getting up in the zone.  Is that true?

by ryanhealy on Apr 17, 2005 12:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Re: Well, yeah.
He's been starting off low in the zone, then coming up later in the count.

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 17, 2005 12:54 PM PDT up reply actions

MLB Gamecast
Is MLB TV any good and worth the money? The wife cancelled cable and all I'm left with Rick Riz

by Bobby Ayala on Apr 17, 2005 12:58 PM PDT reply actions

Re: MLB Gamecast
I absolutely love MLB.tv. I don't regret the purchase one bit.

Know this, though: if you're in the Seattle area, all the Mariners game will be blacked out.

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 17, 2005 1:01 PM PDT up reply actions

I wonder if MLB.com will let me upgrade Gameday
...to MLB.TV.  If so, I might go all the way and pay the 80 bucks for everything.

Told you Dobbs would do something...
well, it was not much, but he did advance the tie run to third :)

by manyoso on Apr 17, 2005 1:17 PM PDT reply actions

Re: Told you Dobbs would do something...
A "productive out" is still an out.

Have I mentioned how bad this bench is?

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 17, 2005 1:19 PM PDT up reply actions

This should be a telling at bat.
Props to Reed for laying off that last one.

by manyoso on Apr 17, 2005 1:26 PM PDT reply actions

reed
Great at bat by Reed, yeah.  Especially holding off that last pitch.

Great at bat by Beltre, too, but we expect that from him.

by BrianV on Apr 17, 2005 1:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Awesome!
The whole team needed that.  A nice productive inning.

by manyoso on Apr 17, 2005 1:28 PM PDT reply actions

Certainly
killed their rally with that call

by elsid on Apr 17, 2005 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions

re: Dobbs
Not sure what your getting at their.

by Garces on Apr 17, 2005 1:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Re: Dobbs
He's remarkably efficient at making outs without wasting anyone's time. So he's got that going for him.

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 17, 2005 1:48 PM PDT up reply actions

What is Meche's tolerance?
Shouldn't he be done for the night?  96 pitches with a sore arm... you'd think Hardgrove will relieve, wouldn't you think?

by manyoso on Apr 17, 2005 1:51 PM PDT reply actions

Re: What is Meche's tolerance?
You'd think.

I imagine they'll leave him in until he gives up a baserunner, though.

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 17, 2005 1:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Re: What is Meche's tolerance?
Villone is up, since Meche has set 7 in a row down I guess they're gonna let him stay.

by bluemax on Apr 17, 2005 2:02 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't get it.
If you're confident enough to leave Meche out there with 96 pitches to start the seventh, why pull him at 99 pitches because Timo Perez is hitting?

I'm not a Hargrove fan...

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 17, 2005 2:02 PM PDT reply actions

Shit, maybe that's why he is managing
three pitches and two outs and now he's going to yank him.  Damn, what the hell!

by manyoso on Apr 17, 2005 2:02 PM PDT reply actions

Greg Dobbs....
is an out machine, but man that swing makes it all worth it.

by Cy Meche on Apr 17, 2005 2:37 PM PDT reply actions

Please come back soon, Pokey.
Valdez is beginning to wear on me.

Here comes Eddie! Weeeeeeeeeeee...

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 17, 2005 2:41 PM PDT reply actions

Heh.
That was ball four.

I'm loving the umps today.

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 17, 2005 2:46 PM PDT reply actions

Guardado is like.....
Mixing together Tobasco Sauce, Jalapeno Peppers and Alka Seltzer and chugging that mess until you explode.

Try it sometime.

by Cy Meche on Apr 17, 2005 2:48 PM PDT reply actions

Thank you Olivo...
Eddie needs to swallow drano.

Haha I think he was safe.

by Cy Meche on Apr 17, 2005 2:57 PM PDT reply actions

Holy Wow!
YES! I swear though. Eddie needs to be demoted.

And I am sick of LOOGYING Villone. What if we would have gone into extra innings? Our Long guy is gone.

by Corco on Apr 17, 2005 2:59 PM PDT reply actions

Nonsense
There's always Thornton...

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 17, 2005 3:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Eddie
Really, given the recovery, the re-injury, the re-recovery -- how wise was it to start the season with Guardado as closer?  couldn't grover have allowed him to work his way back in less critical situations? used jj to close? why was it so important to establish eddie as the closer from the start?

rightly, in every age it is assumed we are witnessing the disappearance of the last traces of paradise... Cioran
