Odds and Ends

Rotoworld has all sorts of interesting bits today:

-----

"The Rangers have offered Matt Morris a deal believed to be worth about $25 million over three years."

Run awayyyy!!!!

-----

"Alfonso Soriano said he has no intention of playing outfield for the Nationals. 'I'm going to play second base,' Soriano said."

So the Nat's might have to move him right away.  The follow up discusses the possibility of trading Nick Johnson and moving Vidro to 1st.  It's hard to think they would fix this problem by trading their best hitter, but after the deals they've made this year and last, I would get on the phone with them right now.

------

"A source told the Boston Herald another team that was interested in Andy Marte turned away after the Braves acknowledged the player had a tear in the ulnar collateral ligament of an elbow."

I don't know anything about injuries like this, but is it still such a steal for Boston?

Oh, Oh, I like this idea
Nick Johnson, please.  I wonder if he could convince the Nationals.

Personally...
I like Ryan Church.

Marte
Even if he were forced to miss all of 2006 rehabbing, he'd be back in 2007 as the same guy who tore up AAA as a 21 year old third baseman. Hell, that'd actually make it a little easier for Boston to clean up the Youkilis/Lowell problem.

Edgar Renteria isn't very good. The Braves should be happy if they get a league-average shortstop for the next three years. You never like it when the prospect going the other way is hurt, but even if Marte has to go under the knife, Boston still made out like bandits.

Ya but Boston
is eating 8 million of the 26 left

by Scruffy Lefty on Dec 9, 2005 10:34 AM PST up reply actions

I know
I'm just saying boston didn't get the steal of the Century
and the way the Braves have been winning since I was in elementry school I don't doubt there judgement

by Scruffy Lefty on Dec 9, 2005 10:46 AM PST up reply actions

But its
Marte!?  It's not just some good or potentially good player.  He's a potential and a likely star player.  The Red Sox gave away an average player, for an excellent one.  Potentially of course, but still.

Of course, the tear might be real serious costing him his career.

I'm a real doubter this yr for the Braves.  They lost Mazzone too.  They unload their top prospect, and get Renteria.  Yikes.

and
don't forget no closer, no estrada, and the mets got a lot better.

by Christian on Dec 9, 2005 11:50 AM PST up reply actions

umm
They didn't have a closer last year either.
Brian McCann will outperform Johnny Estrada in 2006

I've been a doubter for a decade
and all they keep doing is winning their division.

I'm not saying that Renteria won't help
but his contributions over the remaining years of the contract will probably pale in comparison to the 6 years of Marte they would have enjoyed. Fact is, I 'm sure teams would have lined up with better offers and better talent to try and get the young 3B.

by Trent on Dec 9, 2005 12:10 PM PST up reply actions

It is about
right here, right now. And the Braves were burned when Furcal left so out of desperation they made a deal for Renteria, a guy with All-Star credentials. Coupled with the fact that the BoSox are eating a huge portion of his contract, I don't see the problem short term. Long term I agree with you 100% but when organizations are desperate they do things like trading away prospects for someone to currently perform (or not) at the ML level (see Jason Varitek) or make boneheaded free agent signings (see prospective signing of Carl Everett).

Also
I don't remeber where I heard this but

I heard that the Rangers are going to try to trade Wilkerson for some pitching

by Scruffy Lefty on Dec 9, 2005 10:35 AM PST reply actions

I believe it's Mench
but one of their OF's will likely be traded for P.

by Trent on Dec 9, 2005 10:37 AM PST up reply actions

I also read
somewhere that they talked with Toronto about both Wilkerson and Mench.  Don't remember where.  Toronto probably asked about Wilkerson, and Texas responded with Mench.

From mlb4u.com
Kip Wells- SEA asked for him, but discussions stopped when PIT asked for Raul Ibanez

Gil Meche- Pirates, Orioles, Mets, and Brewers have said no thanks

Joe Borchard- several teams interested and could be dealt soon

Borchard please.....

by Christian on Dec 9, 2005 2:34 PM PST reply actions

No thanks on Borchard
I'd like to acquire a guy who at least has hit above the Mendoza line for his career.

by Mariner John on Dec 9, 2005 2:57 PM PST up reply actions

Hasn't Borchard
been rumored in nearly every Chicago trade the past three years?

by Trent on Dec 9, 2005 2:59 PM PST up reply actions

You're trying to
tell me that he wouldnt be an amazing bench bat?  he can crush a ball.  And didn't the M's first want him instead of Reed in the garcia deal?..

The guy has...
brain trauma. Watching the Sonics has been difficult enough this year but having to listen to him is absolute torture.
