Ichiro...

Since such a big deal was made in the media about the comments that Ichiro was reported to make I just wanted to point out the Seattle Times this morning to everyone.  The guy that did the interview wrote a statement talking about how wrong the original translation was.  Partly about how Ichiro never said anything about cards and how that was all part of the commentary written by the interviewer.

Too bad none of the big newspapers will repeat this...

I was reading the article
in the Times where Konishi basically said the P-I "reworked" his interview with Ichiro. It reminds me  of a different article I recently read about baseball in Vegas from two different sources by Norman Chad. The first is the Washington Post:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/11/27/AR2005112700636.html

and the second the P-I:

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/baseball/249941_chad28.html

In the latter it said it was "SPECIAL TO THE POST-INTELLIGENCER", which I found amusing since they left out half the article. Irresponsible journalism seems to be the order of the day these days at the P-I.

Smells fishy
Sure, many things get lost in translation, but an entire conversation about playing cards?  This sounds like a push to smooth some ruffled feathers.

Read the translations
Because, having read both articles in the original, I can tell you that Ichiro in his quotes never mentions teammates playing cards.

If you think the P-I is bad, Japanese sports journalists are even more notorious for "reading between the lines" making up their own conclusions.

Nothing fishy at all
Sam said it plain and simple, Ichiro did not make a statement at all with regards to playing cards in the clubhouse.

Sam should know, he translated the article in the Number magazine himself.

This is the perfect example of profit over ethics. A bad story sells more than a simple short good one.

Never give the media any benefit of the doubt.

BTW, I wonder what that NY paper is thinking now, after one of their "sources" said Ichiro asked the FO to fire Hargrove?

For those who fallback to "where there's smoke there's fire"  - even a piece of crap will look like it's smoking (steaming) if the temperature is cold enough.
